[Closed - Derrick] Whoever told Matty that she could survive on five or less hours of sleep a night was a total and utter liar. Okay, so maybe we shouldn't jump to that conclusion straight away, given the situation. The girl had probably been the one to convince herself that she could manage to live like that. It was much the same thing every day, from the word "go". Wake up, go for a run, show and dress, then eat. Classes took up the good part of the day, with lunch and study squeezed into her spare time. And the afternoons? Well, they switched between Quidditch practice, spending time with her friends or boyfriend, and on a couple of occasions this week; for study. Matilda's nights consisted of catching up with house mates like Maddy or Josh, which were always relaxing and comforting. Then, after whoever she was with decided to go to bed, Matty was left having a mini freak out, because she hadn't done what little homework was left to do. And of course, being a sixth year, the homework still needed to be done. Lucky for Matty, the real pay loads hadn't started coming in just yet. Give it a week, though, and she would could probably make a lounge set with the amount of books, paper and ink she was using up to complete everything. Hence the reason the girl was eager to sleep in on the weekend. But, alike the schedule the girl had landed herself in this past week, things don't always go to plan. Matty had woken to the sound of crashing and banging in the common room. Ah, lovely, firsties. The girl managed to drag herself out of bed, on this wonderfully dark, cold and rainy September morning, stumbling down the stairs, eyes half shut. When she reached the common room, the girl found the door to the castle to be slightly askew. Brilliant. Matilda sighed and walked to the door, stepping outside and closing it behind her. She was up now, and as early as it was, there was no chance of sleeping again, not in her dorm anyway. The teenager dragged her feet into the Great Hall, green eyes surveying the few people seated, and eating an early morning breakfast. Matty didn't care that she was still in her pajamas, consisting of gray track pants that gathered at her feet and a purple singlet. Her hair was held up in a messy bun, bangs falling out and sweeping to either side of her face. It wasn't as if she had classes today; no worries. Reaching the Hufflepuff table in less than a minute, Matilda slumped down and and pulled a piece of buttered toast onto her plate. She clumsily spread jam onto it, before picking up a paper a little way down her table. The girl still felt a little distant from the world at such an hour, and so she didn't even really acknowledge the fact that she put down the thick paper, her head following suit. And so there she was; already half way to falling back asleep. Oh, and did I mention that half her hand was occupying the jam side of her toast? Nope, I didn't. But that was just the case.

Derrick sighed heavily as he laid in his bed. He didn't want to wake up what so ever at the moment especially since it was still somewhat early and it was the weekend. This was the only time he ever really bothered to attempt to have any type of lay in was on these days but almost always it eventually didn't last for more then 10 minutes. Derrick blinked as the sleep still covered his eyes but the suns ray had a much different opinion of what would happen. Attempting to roll over to avoid the sun Derrick tumbled from his bed hit the floor with a loud bang and earning scratches from Niwa as he fell. His cat had taken a tendency to sleeping on his chest since they came here seeing as his bed here was much smaller then his one at home. With a heavy sigh he let his head rest on his bed, another day of the same routine schedule for him. Looking himself over from where he sat he decided he would go down to breakfast as he was. It didn't matter it was the weekend and their probably wouldn't be that many people down in the dining hall at this time of morning. Sighing he stood up and stretched letting out a long yawn trying to wake up fully somehow. It wasn't happening and probably wouldn't until he started moving around fully. He shivered as his feet went from warm to cold due to the floors. Slipping on his slippers he pulled on a hoodie over his shirt. No matter what he was always so cold in this room. Walking over to Niwa he rubbed his head lovingly and waved as he moved towards the door speaking to his pet as if he could somehow understand.
"I'll catch you later kid behave yourself up here."
The cat was like his brother or best friend. Which one he wasn't to sure possibly even both but whichever the cat was his main confider. Sighing he headed down to the common room searching for a friendly face to go eat breakfast with him. Who though would be a friendly face. He had meet Maddy on the train and they got along well enough but he didn't see her there and really didn't know anyone else. It was odd this longing he now had to meet people after meeting the first. One person had made him want to meet more so he could speak and socialize with them. It was now like a bug that ate at his brain. Shrugging his shoulders he headed out into the hallways and stairs that would lead him to the great hall. Running his hand along the castle walls he began to hum slowly. Glancing around to see who was around he felt safe that no one was there and began to sing to his hearts content. He knew that once he started humming it would lead here but it really didn't bother him. He just hoped that no one else would mind at all as he began to open his mouth.
"Baby girl, I'm a blur, I spoiled, stunted, sickened her. God and Death are none of my concern, I'm no philosopher. Deep in your heart, stitched the key and only one can set me free from the beast where I dwell and let the saints all burn in hell. So take what you want from me, (I'm on my way) hey and take all I've got from me, (I'm on my way) hey you're with me all the time. The drugs can have my mind, love you own the rest you'll find and you're with me all the time."
Derrick stopped abruptly at the Great Hall doors. He didn't realize that he had traveled so far so quickly but shrugging it off he knew it as something that happened a bit too often to him. Swinging open the doors he consumed the stagnant breakfast crowd. Everyone was far to tired still and had apparently drug themselves down here on pure power of will for food. It was unfortunately the usual crowd for the weekend though and he scanned the hall in search of a paper. He spotted one setting next to a girl who had her head down and while he knew it would be terrible manners to wake her and ask for the paper, he also knew that it would be just as unkind to leave her down her when she wasn't at her full senses. Derrick approached the table at a slack pace trying to figure out how about her wits she was from this point of vantage. Glancing at her as he sat down he poured himself a glass of orange juice and continued to ponder whether it would be a good idea to wake her or not. He recognized her though from the Quidditch games he had attended last year. He had no idea of her standing on the team or who she was but knew at least that she was on the team and this was more progress then he could make in remembering faces he didn't know in his opinion. Turning his head he noticed her hand was in her toast which was slathered in jam. Sighing he couldn't help at this point but feel a bit of pity and knew that he should wake the girl. After all if he didn't who would and to awaken in the middle of the afternoon in the great hall with your hand in toast could not be a good way to start the day. Derrick mustered all the courage and self confidence he could put into his voice and shook the girl lightly speaking at a reasonable tone as possible when waking someone from sleep.
" Hey, you should probably wake up because...well to be frank...umm your hand is in your toast. Which you should remove if you intend to eat it because I don't know....it might ruin it or something I guess."
Derrick knew he sounded nervous, uncertain, and over all like a bit of a dullard but he didn't care all that much about it. He just needed to get the message across so this girl would hopefully rise from her sleep.

Sleep was a wonderful, wonderful thing when in solid periods of time. It was now wonderful, however, in short, light, and broken up pieces. Lucky for Matty, she was not a heavy sleeper, nor a light one. Generally, given the fact that she didn't have anything to bother or worry her, or wake her up at that, the girl got at a steady amount of sleep that satisfied her needs. And in that, the girl had found that she didn't need more than eight hours sleep in a normal night. So after a long, hard week more sleep was wanted and required, but on a usual school night about seven hours, sometimes less, gave her enough fuel for the next day.
Though, as previously stated, that hadn't been the case for the last week. She hadn't been sleeping all that week, given the situations, and that was something Matilda had made a note on to change. As much as she hated it, the girl would have to cut down on a little bit of socializing with people, and make room for the homework sure to come. I mean, seriously. She was sixteen in less than a month, at the prime of her life, some would say, and in a magic school. The girl had to stay in touch with things, and make sure the most relevant issues were taking care of. Yet... having friends was as important was her education was to Matty. It was a situation that the teenager had to balance out to the right amount. Of course, all of this information was floating through her head, as the girl fell into a light sleep, only to be woken mere minutes later.
wake up because... frank... is in your toast... remove you... eat it... ruin it... I guess.
What in the name of Merlin was frank doing in her toast? Matty felt the feeling of sudden awakening come over her, as the words of a boy reached her eyes. The girl's eyes opened in a dazed sort of way, as she blinked them a few times to help to wake herself up. The Hufflepuff lifted her head an inch above the paper, tilting it up wards to see one of her house mates standing over her. "Mmm... wha's Frank doin' in my toast?" the girl questioned sleepily, heaving her body up so she sat slumped. It was when Matty lifted her hands from the table that she suddenly realized what this boy had been speaking out. The toast, her hand. Ruined. Right, Matilda, way to make an idiot of yourself. "Oh, you... you meant my hand. Uhm," she glanced up at the boy, a sheepish smile accompanying her blush.
The girl lifted her jam lathered palm, and looked around for a napkin. She found one under another plate, and proceeded to wipe the spread from her hand. Now that the teenager had begun to move, she felt her body waking up even more so, therefore, clearing her mind. Once everything was removed from her hand, she scrunched up the napkin, tossing it beside her toast, which now had a circular print in the middle with sprouts of length resembling her fingers. "Thanks, by the way, for, er, waking me up and all." Matilda thanked him, her blush ceasing slightly as she turned to offer him a genuine smile.

Derrick watched as she got herself together. Being tired was one thing but Derrick highly doubted he'd ever let it go as far as him falling asleep at the breakfast table. Shrugging the thought off though he hoped that she hadn't ruined her toast. After all food was always a terrible thing to waste no matter what the situation. He wished he could smack himself sometime at that moment. Why oh why did he let his mind wonder like that or even assess such matters. If anyone had ever wondered why Derrick didn't have the much interaction with other people it could be answered pretty easily at that moment. Derrick was socially awkward and shy to boot unless he had a guitar on him and he was playing the instrument. Shaking his head he turned his attention back to his fellow house mate; after all why should he banter with himself in his head when he had a real flesh and blood person that could talk right in front of him. She smiled at him and thanked him. He was only doing what he thought was right. What kind of person would just leave another sleeping on a table in the great hall? He quickly forgot that question as he knew there was probably one person in the school who would.
"It isn't a problem, I mean, I know I'd hate to wake up with half dry jam on my hand...in the middle of the afternoon or something like that."
Derrick wanted to smack himself after the way he spoke. It was awkward before because he was waking some random girl up but now she was awake and had thanked him. Why did this always happen to him and only with random people? It wasn't everyone that made him react like this it was just random people that he felt odd talking to so he hesitated which harbored his already terrible social skills. Derrick quickly filled his plate with the breakfast foods present and began to eat. He couldn't help but think that he should talk to her instead of just sitting their quietly. It'd be the polite thing to do wouldn't it? How would he know that though his interaction with people at meal time was limited to his past and present parents both of which talked vividly with him at the table but he wasn't to positive if it was okay with other people. He was sure that certain people preferred to eat in silence without any interruptions. That wasn't him though and it had made the past two years of eating in the hall somewhat unbearable and actually for the most part had been the only part he didn't enjoy of the school year. Looking up he decided he'd attempt to force out a somewhat understandable sentence that didn't make him feel like a total fool.
"So how has your year been going so far?"
It was a simple question but was one that was usually asked by old friends and he didn't even know this girl's name. He wanted to hit himself more then he had before. Would it be too late to bring that up now, should he wait for her to ask, or should he just take another plunge. Sighing he looked up into the girl's eyes and spoke nervously and introduced himself.
"By the way I'm Derrick Breckenridge nice to meet you."
There he had gotten it out of the way and didn't feel like too much of an idiot now. Smiling lightly he continued to eat and just hoped that his morning went well.

"Yeah, true that. Thanks again." Matilda said genuinely with that same smile on her face. She was thankful, at the least. No amount of elf esteem, or ego, or even a lack of caring as to what other people thought would have been able to shield the Hufflepuff girl from feeling stupid, embarrassed, and disorientated if she had woken laster with sticky, dried jam on her hand. In that, she wasn't a very egotistical girl, nor did she let other people's judgment effect herself. But lets be honest, Matty would have rather be liked, than hated. Yet, she wouldn't want to be admired for something she's not - she would much rather be disliked for something she was. But, we're not really talking about social egos here, are we? It was merely dried jam on her hand.
She watched from the corner of her eye as he served his own breakfast, and sat down to eat. In the mean time, Matilda grabbed a knife and scrapped the hand-printed jam from her toast, before putting another layer of spread over the top. Hey, it wasn't utterly ruined, right? She would be eating that toast with her hands anyway - they were clean, and it had only been the jam that was kind of spoiled. Matty took a bite of the slice, chewed, and swallowed. Then, as she was just about to look up from her own person, and ask the boy what his name was, he beat her to the chase, by questioning about her year so far.
"It's been hectic, more so than last year anyway. I've had to pick up my studies in potions, and I'm now a student aid for the Fifth years, for extra credit purposes. That and Quidditch has needed allot of attention, with new strategies and all." She confessed, her features soft, before Matilda went ahead to reply to his introduction.
"I'm Matilda Wentworth, it's nice to meet you too, Derrick." the teen stated, giving him a bit of a bigger smile and she nodded to wards him as well. "So how about you, how's your year been? You're a... fourth or, third year, right?" Matty asked, pressing her lips together in thought. The older student had always enjoyed conversing, and getting to know those younger members of her house. The Hufflepuff Family was always growing, and having been at Hogwarts for Six years now, the teenager considered herself a part of it's history. She had lived through the era of Michael Rolen, as his little sister, and seen the types of issues that older students faced. She had been a part of Krissy Flemming's various paint and dung bomb attacks. She had even part-taken in the search for the missing shoes, back in her third year. It was events as such, that made Matilda grateful for being placed in the Badger clan, as opposed to any other.

Derrick continued to eat and adjusted himself attempting to make himself a bit more comfortable in his seat. Straightening up he switched to an Indian style way of sitting and felt a bit more at ease as he ate. Moving his eggs around his plate he always wondered why they were the one food that Hogwarts always managed to disappoint him with. Maybe it was because he was so used to cooking his own and just preferred his for that reason. Shrugging he decided that they really weren't that bad but could be better this was something though he would never tell the house elves. Looking up with a mouthful Derrick listened to Matilda thoughtfully and couldn't help but feel he was having quite the opposite of a time with his year.
"Yes I'm a third year. Well actually it's a bit opposite of yours to be honest. I've got a meeting with Professor Tapia to see if I can do extra Potions with her because there are quite a few things I'd like to try out that won't be covered in class. The same would go for Transfiguration but to be honest Professor Van Aller scares me quite a bit so I probably won't ask."
Derrick hoped he hadn't come off as boastful at all because it really wasn't what he had intended. At least he hadn't offered to help her with the potion work although the only reason wasn't because he thought he'd sound a bit arrogant about the whole ordeal but also because their wasn't enough confidence in him to make such an offer. A third year offering to help her with potions was not only offensive but laughable. Shaking it off he though of her mentioning of Quidditch. He was going out for the team but decided to leave that bit out as sharing such events wasn't something he was to keen on if anything he preferred to practice his broom work by himself. This would change should he make the team but if he made it then he would be more then fine with it. Looking up he stopped in the middle of chewing spoke with somewhat of a mouthful.
"Oh and nice to meet you Matilda."
This came out though as something that sounded a bit more like O n hice to eat bo Cathilda. Swallowing his food he smiled and tried to look hopeless although this wouldn't surprise him if that was how he had looked all along.
"I meant to say nice to meet you Matilda."
Looking back to his food he glanced around the hall noticing it was still surprisingly dead. It was the weekend though so most of the normal people were probably asleep. He needed to stop doing that he was normal wasn't he? If he wasn't who cared he'd just deal with the whole situation in his own way. Derrick looked up and remembered he had left one important thing out of his answer to how his year was.
"Oh and I'm actually talking to people this year. That's kind of a biggie I guess up until now I haven't even really had friends here."
Derrick sighed and realized he probably sounded pitiful but actually could care less at the moment. It was something he was proud of and was quite a big step for him so what if he sounded like a total loser. If worse came to worse he'd just go back to the room and Francesca would remedy his problems. He began humming slightly at the thought of it and just hoped Matilda he didn't strike Matilda as being too much of an odd ball.

Matty listened to Derrick carefully, as he explained his own matter of Potions classes and such, finding it interesting that a boy of his age would be eager to take up more potions. She could only assume that it was a subject he enjoyed, and was intrigued by, to attend such an issue. The girl herself didn't mind Potions, it was just that it wasn't' her best subject, and she could rightfully accept that. You couldn't be good at everything, for that matter, but in the case of Matilda's career, Potions was something vitally important, and she was taking the right measures to secure her future like that. After all, what was an extra few classes a week, that would ultimately give her what she wanted in life?
"Oh, I can understand how you feel about Professor Van Aller. Personally, I think she's alright if you're on her good side, but I guess I have my good Transfiguration skills to party thank for that. When it comes to Tapia though, I'm sure she'll be impressed about you wanting to take up more Potions, after all, she was really understanding when it came to my extra credit." Matty gave him a reassuring smile, though the teenager was certain that he wouldn't need much reassuring. Tapia was a fair and nice lady, and with her being their common Head of House, she saw little reason why the Professor would object to such a proposal fro Derrick.
She took another bite of toast, while the boy spoke something that Matty didn't quite catch. Once she swallowed, a grin slept onto her face as he then correct himself. With a laugh in her voice, the girl gave a nod. "Call me Matty, if you like, everyone else does eventually." it as only recently that she had started introducing herself as Matilda again. Since third year, the girl had only been referred to as Matty, a nickname that stuck. In fact, not many people called her Matilda at all, as Matty just seemed to fit her that little bit better. The words that the boy spoke next caught the teenager a little by surprise, but now that she thought about it, it wasn't actually that odd.
Tianne hadn't spoken to many, up until last year, which was when Matty became her best friend. If the girl recalled right, they had met in a tree, both reading a book, and wearing similar styles of clothing. Emeric too, hadn't branched out past his own scene of people until last year. And now look at them, the two had been together for ten months now, a relationship that was originally based on the fact that opposites could attract. "Well, congratulations, for what it's worth. If it's any consolation, I didn't make many friends until my second year. I think it gets easier as you get older, really." Matty mentioned, before taking another couple of bites of her toast. With the seconds rolling on, a relevant question came to mind, regarding Derrick.
"So what electives are you taking for this year?"

Another girl requesting the he call them by a nickname. Derrick had made the exception for Maddyson but he had hoped he would only have to make the exception for her. Derrick from what he had gathered generally liked Matilda's company so he thought he may try but it wasn't something that he would keep on his mind to do as he did with Maddyson. Calling people was just something he did and it was now more so habit then anything else. Was he the only one around here who enjoyed names in their full pronounced glory. Although he didn't exactly enjoy his full name he would much rather be called that then anything else. Maddyson of course was once again the exception to this rule because she could probably call him anything and he would not mind. Well not anything but Derrick wouldn't care regardless of what she called him. Derrick let his mind wander for a few more moments as the girl spoke but then turned and answered her question.
"Care of Magical Creatures, Ancient Runes, and Muggle Studies. I probably enjoy Magical Creatures the most but I prefer William as a teacher so I like Muggle Studies the most."
Derrick thought for a brief moment of the child like man and the search for his classroom. The man had peaked Derrick's interest that day and he continued to amaze him. He liked William to there were no nicknames involved only first names. It was simple, clean, and pure so what more could he really ask for from the relationship with his Professor? Derrick carefully ate a piece of bacon making sure he didn't make too much of a mess of himself. It was odd how fast this was all happening. How randomly he was speaking to people and how all the relationships were blossoming. He loved it to say the least but at the same time he knew he needed to check himself. After all Derrick didn't want to become overwhelmed by all of this somehow. Derrick now directed a question of his own at her. It was something he was curious about to say the least and would ask others about to but for now she would be the first one to be asked.
"So how's the whole O.W.L thing going? Any harder then what you've dealt with before?"
He knew it was random but Derrick didn't care. He couldn't wait until his sixth year because of the promised classwork and it's difficulties. He doubted he would drop any of his classes for it with the lone exception possibly being Astronomy. He wanted his sky to remain pristine and magical, not to be explained to him. The rest of the courses and the sole idea of them excited him to no end. The ideas of advanced class and wand work alone thrilled him and Derrick didn't care if it made him a nerd or not. He just hoped that by this time he would not have had enough time to learn all the spells that were going to be taught to them. It wasn't really that he was bragging about the matter but more so that it was the truth. Derrick was learning spells now that most should know or be learning in their fourth year not their third and no matter what there didn't seem to be anything that would slow him down though. That didn't concern Derrick though he just wanted to be able to do more with his wand then he could now. That was all that really mattered to him when it boiled down to it.

Matty nodded as Derrick stated his elective classes for the year. She wasn't surprise by his choices in any way, for she didn't know him well enough to guess or judge what he might have picked. Anyway, she wasn't the sort to pass that kind of judgment anyway. However, the girl could relate to his choices. Funnily enough, she had taken those same electives during her fifth year, and passed all three classes at that. At his mention of William, though, the teen was a bit curious. She knew their previous Muggle studies teacher had left, however the girl wasn't sure on who William was. Unless, that is, Derrick was referring to their Professor's first name, which wouldn't be too odd. After all, Alexander preferred them to call him by his first name.
"I can understand where you're coming from. I took those three classes for my electives last year, and Care of magical Creatures was really enjoyable. I'm assuming William is Professor Garcia, right? I haven't met him yet, actually." she admitted, a small smile still on her lips. At his own question, Matty took a few moments before replying to Derrick, she had to consider it first.
Now that she did think about it, the girl made the realization that it wasn't proving to be all too hard - not yet anyway. Basically, it was another step in the ladder to reaching her full potential, and learning the skills along the way. Matilda hadn't always been top of her classes, but she was in the percentage that were considered "smart". She had always been a rather attentive student, and did study when she needed to. So really, O.W.L's weren't unbearable, nothing like stressing all night about classes or homework. They were hard, but she could deal with them.
"I guess they're just the next notch higher. Some of the concepts we're learning, along with new intricate spells and potions are harder, but they're interesting too. I suppose it's just the next step, they are hard, but not impossible." the girl finished with the same smile on her face, before taking another bite of her toast, dropping the finished crust on her plate. "So if you don't mind me asking, what held you back from making friends before now?" it wasn't offensive, Matty made sure her tone was curious and friendly. It just always interested her to find pick apart a situation, to see how the end result was put together. Derrick wasn't something to be pulled apart in such terms, but she was interested in what might have held him back before now.

Derrick watched and as always analyzed the girl as she thought...well whatever she was thinking. He was aware to do so was a terrible habit but he didn't care. Derrick had always been this way and it wasn't as if he was doing it maliciously. It was quite the opposite. Derrick never looked at people and thought about what they could do for him or what he could use them for. That kind of thinking really wasn't in Derrick's nature and he didn't exactly have the guts to actually attempt to use anyone to his advantage. No it was different because Derrick analyzed if they would attempt to do this to him or in a quite childish attempts if he could read their mind. He knew that is was somewhat possible to read others thoughts in certain branches of magic but he desired no such power. Derrick rather enjoyed his fun little attempts and for the most part liked to be surprised every now and then by people's actions. Derrick struggled with the concept a bit though as he could read people easily through their eyes. He blamed this on his year in the orphanage though. They hadn't exactly been a picnic and his eyes had become accustomed to reading others for the sole reason of knowing who to avoid and who he could at least sit next to for five minutes depending on their mood of course. Derrick as he was getting used to was brought down back out of his thoughts by Matilda's words.
"Yep that's him. If you have him though he prefers William. Quite the enjoyable chap."
Derrick hoped he didn't sound like too much of a brown noser with the comment because that really wasn't his intentions. He didn't need to suck up for grades or attention, his actions did all the talking. Being honest though as he knew could be misconstrued quite often though as sucking up. That was a flaw of his though wasn't it or at least he thought most people would consider it to be that. While not lying was a good thing was being honest all the time the best way? Especially if it meant never saving peoples feelings. Derrick didn't know how to lie even for the better of someone's well being. Derrick would work on it though because maybe it was better that people didn't always know the truth.
"Well that's good that it isn't impossible. I have some form of hope then."
He let an awkward grin escape form of his lips at his pitiful attempt at wit. He wasn't exactly the best with such things and knew that it was a horrible attempt. Sighing he was caught by surprise by her next question. Not because he was put off by it because he thought it would most likely be obvious. It was simple really or at least he thought. He was socially awkward or at least that's what he cared to call it. Sighing he shrugged and took a drink hoping that his answer wouldn't be questioned further.
"Well I've never been very good at talking in general. For the longest time people just kind of well scared me. It wasn't exactly on my own volition this girl kind of helped."
Derrick was careful not to blush at the thought of Maddyson. To just not let on too much more then he needed to. For all he knew they could be friends and that was all Derrick needed was to have his feelings becoming common room banter between the two girls.
