So far in Defense Against the Dark Arts the Fourth Year students had received a rather rounded variety of information. A basic introduction to everything in first year; philosophies, a tad of history, dark creatures, some counter spells. An in-depth look on dark creatures in their second year; focusing on both the exotic and the native. An abundance of all sorts of useful spells and hexes in their third year; from Finite Incantatum to Stunners. They had the basics. If one were to send them off into the world at this point, they would be fine as long as they did not come in contact with anything darker than a harmless maniac with a wand. Now it was time to get a bit more serious.
And serious they were going to get.
The floors were bare of desks and chairs, but they were not covered in a plush-mat carpeting as they had been last year. Very little reason for them. The spells and hexes had been practiced on each other and therefore had required something for the possibly unconscious to fall on. They were now going to be undertaking a more solitary and complex line of magic. Which also meant she would receive the customary complaint letters from parents for teaching their baby something "too advanced" for their comprehension. If she, Raynor, had managed this spell successfully, a fourth year student could. And that was what she told parents.
Standing in the middle of the room, the Professor waited patiently for the arrival of her Fourth Year students. Behind her, the portraits of various famous aurors through History conferred quietly with each other in their frames. They only rioted occasionally, which due to their generation difference, Raynor was grateful (different generations meant conflicting idealisms on the proper methods of "defense"). She usually removed them from the classroom presence during the Seventh Year history discussion for her own sanity.
Behind her back, her thumbs fiddled with each other. The clock chimed two o'clock throughout the school. Any minute now.

Rushing through the halls of Hogwarts, Evie Pavion was sure that she was going to be late, which was not something that she wanted on her very first day of classes. Cursing under her breath, she shook her head. "...should have left long before you did..." she muttered to herself as she ran, not watching where she was going at all. Finally bursting through the doors, she was surprised to find that she had in fact been the first person to burst through the doors. Pausing a moment to catch her breath, Evie did her best to smile.
"Hello Professor." She panted out, whiping her brow on her sleeve.

Strolling through one of the last Corridors, Matty had a smile on her face. She was just taking it easy, as the Hufflepuff knew her way very well to Defense Against the Dark Arts, and was in no hurry to get there. She finally reached the door, just after a previous student had ran past her and burst into the doors, causing Matty to smirk, and produced through the door. "Afternoon Professor," the Hufflepuff said in a cheery tone, walking to the left side of the classroom, and plopping her her bag.
Matty's smirked was now in a smile, as she took out her wand, thinking that this class would be more of a practical, and lent on the wall. Her hair was up as it had been all day, in a high pony tail and her fringe out. The girl's green eyes wandered around, glancing over the portraits of small-looking people.

Jynx made his way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom just steps behind the other two girls. Entering through the door gave a smile of acknowledgement to the professor before heading over to where Matty had set her bag down. Setting his own bag right next to hers he said hello and then he too took out his wand and figgited wtih it in his hands. Twirling it in between his fingers he smiled and said in Matty's direction, "So what do you think is in store for us today?" He had noticed the lack of mat on the floor, but still no desks to be seen. This made him wonder what they were in store for.

"Hey," Matty aid with a grin to wards Jynx as he joined her. The girl's green eyes watched as her boyfriend played with his wand, and smiled as he did so. "Nice wand tricks," she said looking up to his blue eyes. Hearing his question, she looked around for a moment, before returning her eyes and saying "I reckon we're leaning something new, like a hex or jinx or a spell, after all it'd what i expected after everything last year." Matty said with a slight sigh, twirling her wand in her hand. "What about you? Have any idea on what Prof. Raynor has in store for us?" she said with a hint of mystery.

"Oh come on!" Devon grumbled to himself as he stood in the doorway. Beaten again. With a sigh, Devon decided to just suck it up and just go over there. Making his way across the desk-less classroom, Devon put a smile on as he neared the two of them.
"Hey, Matty," he greeted her warmly, and then tried (he honestly did try) to keep the same attitude to Jynx, "Jynx." He didn't bother with a hello, but simply nodded, feeling that was all that was really needed.

Miranda wandered into the classroom for her next class. Jeez, are these guys always the first few kids in class? Miranda thought. "Hello." She said to the professor, with a smile. She took her things out after sitting next to the Raven girl again. It was time to try this social thing. Ash had made her more comfortable talking to people already. She wandered over to where two Huffel's were and a Gryffindor. "Hi, I'm Miranda Shae." She said after taking a deep breath. She waited for introductions with a smile on her face. She brushed a piece of her hair away from her eyes so that she could actually see the people she was takling to.

Murmuring a reply to the students that greeted her, Raynor was quite surprised. Her classroom was usually annoyingly filled with a buzz of idle, and rather pointless, chatter prior to the start of class. But in the vast majority of them today, there had been a lack there of. Perhaps the students truly were beginning to feel the shadow laying over all of them... or perhaps rumors surrounding the First Years and herself had spread to such preposterous proportions that everyone was treading with an abundance of unnecessary care around her. It was more than likely the latter.
Nonetheless, with the exception of a few choice comments from one or two students, they all seemed rather dead. From the Seventh Years... but that was reasonable, they were older, presumably more mature, and had a shocker of a lesson. But a bunch of fourteen year olds.
"Dear Merlin," she began, "are all of you still trying to come back from summer sleeping habits? Well, time to wake up, you will need your wits about you today."
That produced a cough from a portrait of Alastor Moody, the only one ever "awake" during a class, which she promptly ignored... not sure if it was a laugh at her, or a laugh at them. For now, she would assume the latter. However irritating, the man was good to have around; apparently that magical eye still worked in portrait-form, it had revealed many a-smuggled-items in her room.
"Now, up until this point, all of you have learned the basics; theories, mediocre spells, dark creatures. Now we are going to get a bit more advanced. That said, can anyone tell me what a Patronus Charm is?"

Miranda thought. She knew that she had been talked to about this but she couldn't exactly remember. She raised her hand though and would give it her best. "Professor, I believe that it is a spirit like thing that protects you when you summon it." She said just loud enough to be heard by the Professor, but quiet enough that maybe they wouldn't all catch her words if she was wrong. She crossed her fingers beneath the table hoping and praying that she was right. If she wasn't, no big deal, she just hoped that she wouldn't lose points for her house. That would be awful.

Oliver bounded down the steps, making a hard right as he raced towards the DADA classroom. He couldn't believe it. He was late. Late, for the subject he had been spending a great deal of his free time studying for. Would Prof. Raynor yell at him, take away twenty points, jinx him? Fail him? These extremely disturbing possibilities flashed through the boy's mind as he wrenched open the door to the classroom just in time to hear the Prof ask what a Patronus Charm was.
Panting slightly, Oliver blurted "The Patronus Charm is a spell used to summon an entity, silver in colour and misty in substance, that protects the summoner from nearby harm. A Patronus is unique to the person, often taking the form of an animal when summoned correctly. That animal reflects the personality of the summoner. The charm is most often used against Dementors or Lethifolds." Breathing even harder now after reciting this all in one breath, he plonked himself into the nearest chair. "Sorry I'm late, Professor." He added.

Seriously, Matty was close to shoving those two boys in a room and not letting them come out until they were both equal to each other. However the girl couldn't help but smile as Devon greeted her so warmly, if only she could say the same thing for Jynx. "Hey Devon." she said in a cheery tone, before a Ravenclaw girl came over to them. Matty was just about to say Hello and introduce herself, when Prof. Raynor start the class. Matty sighed slightly, and lent up on the wall behind her, casting an evil look to the portrait that had just commented on their class. her green eyes looking back up to the Professor however, the Hufflepuff listened to what this Ravenclaw had to say.
Her thoughts were interrupted by another Ravenclaw bursting into the room, and also answering the question. A smirk played across her face as this happened, a bit of excitement in their dreary class. Matty then sighed slightly, spinning her hand in her right hand, listening to what people thought a 'Patronus' was. They surely wouldn't be trying their own out today, would they?

Miranda spun around in her chair, quickly. While she was answering with her pretty much pathetic answer a Raven boy was answering too. And his answer was so precise it was insane. She groaned quietly and sunk down ever so slightly in her chair. She wanted to groan or sigh but she instead looked hopeful at the Professor. She would either give the Raven boy the points for being so smart, take away points for him being late AND interrupting her, or give Miranda points for trying. She looked at the raven boy and watched as he tried to catch his breath, she smirked and turned back around, shaking her head slightly.

A small laugh escaped Evie's lips as she listened to the professor talk. It wouldn't be long before she would start asking questions. Knowing the answer, Evie contemplated raising her hand. However, knowing the answer did not mean that she would be able to speak it. Sure, she was confident enough to follow students around and draw them. That was just fun. And the looks that they would give her amused her greatly. However, in a classroom, with a professor that could both give and take points that were important to her house, Evie knew that it was safest if she just kept her mouth shut.

Jynx just stood there messing with is wand as he watched everything unfold. He was about to raise his hand and give an answer when the two Ravenclaws beat him to it. Oh well he would just have to be faster in answering next time. Besides it was probably good that the Raven boy got to answer considering he was sure to lose points for being late anyways. Smiling slightly as he listened to him trying to make out what he was saying inbetween pants of breath. He had already knew most of that information, so it wasn't entirely necessary to pay close attention to every last word, right?
