Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] Professor Adelais V. Zercus
[ Character Gender: ] Male
[Character Age:] 62
[ Position: ] Astronomy Professor
[ Country of Citizenship: ] England
[ Physical Character Description: ]
Height: Six, One"
Build: Toned, Athletic.
Hair: A very light blonde, another trait of the Zercus with their Julian Beauty. Though his is becoming more and more platinum as he ages, this seems to only enhance his demeanor.
Eyes: The Zercus eyes are generally a dark green color, being one of their most dominant genes. But Adelais gained the eyes of his mother, Isolde. They are a chilling, grey-blue. Something that he shares with his first child and only daughter, Alexandrina.
Accent: English [Essex]
Other: Adelais is a somewhat tall, powerful looking man. His noble and lordly demeanor greatly plays off of his features. Though there is a subliminal elegance that makes him evens more charming and intimidating at the same time. His eyes are sharp, like a knife, though uncharacteristic to his house. Though despite their hue, his other qualities are very much of the Zercus, including his power and charisma. The famous Fawne eyes are darkening slightly, still as sharp, if not sharper than ever, but to the average onlooker, they would only see a pair of eyes, quite sunken if got greater. He carries himself with great respect, always having an excellent posture. Adelais' sense of style is rather unique, he is one of the only wizards he knows to happily switch between muggle clothing and wizard clothing, mostly he would wear robes in varying colours, This was to show his connection to the wizarding world, and as an upstanding figure in it, he needs to be seen wearing what is right. He also prefers the feel of them! The hair of his head is a very light blonde. It is cut quite short and never styled in any particular way. When wearing muggle attire, it would usually be covered by one of his many hats. He is quite a tall man, standing at 6’1, which some people may associate with having a broad frame, but not Adelais. He is rather thin, almost lanky, but very toned. He has a limp in his right leg, due to an accident involving his cousin, Allegra. He does not wish to discuss the matter.
[ Personality Character Description: ] Adelais is a man that can make his personality accommodate anything that he wants to accomplish for the evening, or year. He is of course, very cunning, and will do almost anything to enhance his influence and power. He is also a very proud entity; and those who slight him or his family in any way, will pay almost the ultimate price. Though it is only but a whisper, he has been rumored to wipe out an entire family. It seems that his anger can be great, because so is his power. The man knows how to get what he wants, but as of late, his hardened self has softened. Since the death of his wife, Clarabelle, his love for his family has grown and slightly softened him. Though that too, may only last for awhile.
Adelais loved his family greatly, and the love he held for them has most definately transferred to other aspects of his life! Take the students for instance, before his children came along, he hated the things, sometimes forgetting that he used to be one himself, but after Narcissus came into the world, he learnt to understand them more and have a patience for them that he did not know he posessed. He grew to love all children as all children seemed to have unique qualities in them that made them special, and Adelais loved that! That was why he decided to go into teaching. While teaching, he found that he was working with a group of people who knew the feeling that he felt everyday when teaching a class, they new his passion and emotion down to a tee. This is why he soon considered all teachers to be his friends. Well most of them anyway. He never seems to get on with any person who teaches Ancient Runes, But that's just him I guess.
[ History: ] Adelais Valerian Zercus was born to Marius and Isolde Zercus on a most chilling October day over half a century ago. He was of course, an only child, as Marius was the type that only wanted his wife for one thing, and that was an heir. Thusly, when he had finally gotten what he wanted, she was simply there for name only: To be a symbol in his house. This of course would make quite the impression on Adelais in during his childhood. Though not the common one, instead of growing to hate his father, he began to strive to be like him; to be perfect and powerful. That is not to say, that in those early days he did not love his mother, because that would be a most untrue statement.
He spent equal times with his parents, and both would shape him, though his father made the larger impression. Always taking him along to train him in the various ways that the Wizarding Aristocracy was to act. He was often reminded that he belonged to one of the most powerful and ancient pureblood families left in Britain, and that should leave him with a great sense of pride. Though this started an early age, practically vanquishing his childhood.
Of course, this training came to an abrupt end when he turned eleven and received his letter from Hogwarts. Of course, his magical training was just as, if not more important that his trainings in the arts of the Aristocracy. Though his enjoyment of life did not cease; upon being sorted he instantly fell in love with the place. The Slytherin House was perfect for him, and he proved to be quite the little talent, especially in Potions and Transfiguration, which were reputed to be harder courses. His Hogwarts career would reflect this year, and in his third, after much begging. His father had a ring crafted for him, an elaborate silver ring with the Slytherin symbol, with a rather large and purified emerald jewel. It has always been a favored ring of his, and he wore it up until the time he succeeded his father as the Head of Zercus, and then of course, he began to wear the Signet Ring.
Unlike most, Adelais did not find the love of his life at Hogwarts, though he made friends with those that would go far in the Wizarding World. Though after his career he resumed his place by his father, going far and wide making contacts, making lucrative donations so he would have some pull in various areas. Though there was a trip to France that would forever change his life forever. For that is when he met his wife, Clarabelle. Hailing from the prosperous French House of Fawne, it was fabled that the women were part Veela. Though this did not stop him, he found her, desired her, and even became to love her as they met one another. She was quick-witted and could get past his mask…which is why, only a short few months later, the two Patriarchs Pierre and Marius set up a marriage.
Shortly after his marriage, Adelais received great and startling news all at once. His wife, Clarabelle, was pregnant with a baby, and his father was getting sicker and sicker, becoming unable to do all of his business conducting. Of course, being who he was, Marius did not mourn his own death, but imparted final wisdoms and knowledge off to his heir and son, whom would take the title of the family upon himself now. Of course, shortly after the death of his father, his first child and only daughter was born. One of the few precious gems of his family, a girl who would become one of the most clever and powerful women in the Aristocracies, Alexandrina Adonia Zercus. Who, luckily, bore the eyes of her father, and the rest of the Julian traits of the House of Zercus.
Though before the regime, Adelais and Marius had established quite a bit of influence over the Minister of Magic. The young pureblood also began to fall into the business holdings of the House of Zercus. Which ranged from a variety of things, and some internationally. Though the one he was most fascinated with was the diamond mines owned in Russia, as well as South America. The mines were of course worked by House-Elves, some wizards, and a few employed Goblins (those who were greedy enough to work for a wizard for a fine coin). That is where their wealth began and was still one of their greatest holdings; they also owned some vineyards in Italy, along with the Carrington’s, where house-elf driven wines were made. Other than that, many, like most other pureblooded families, had investments, and were in on businesses as a silent partner (unless it was going down hill) getting royalty funds and the like. Needless to say, the new Patriarch of the most noble and ancient house of Zercus knew why they were the crème de la crème of the last pureblood families. Using much of his wit and intelligence he kept all of this afloat, and even made founding in a few new things, such as the governing of Hogwarts, and various other ways to make the wealth greater. (In fact one of the latest investments was on a Herbology Mission that was certain to bring about new herbs that’d never been discovered, to be published in books…)
Then came the birth of his first son. Whom was rightly named, Narcissus Alban Zercus. Always a milestone, though that did not halt his business. He took Alexandrina with him to teach her the ropes, and early tutoring sessions. Unfortunately, she was destined, as were all of his children, to be slightly more grown up than other people their age. He was very elated to have a son, for that secured an heir: Not that he was a sexist in any form. But he knew that one day, Alexandrina would marry into another of the pureblooded families of power (it is well known, everyone wants to come into the influence of the Zercus.) Both were relatively intelligent as they began to grow. Always enjoying the luxuries that were afforded to them. And Adelais enjoyed that they held such status, but always making it a point to teach them how to work.
It is true, that Adelais was softer with his family than most others, though when they fell up short, he was sure to correct them: Not that they disliked him. In fact, he was quite sure it drove them to be better than he, and if he could do that, then he would secure the Zercus strength. But a father was almost secondary still to what his greatest goal was, to become more and more powerful. Which lead him to not only solidify and greaten his business holdings, but to learn many arts of magic to make him even singularly powerful.
As the days passed he began to grow more and more powerful, as his children went off to Hogwarts. Where he would subsequently go on trips with his family during the summers. Much was the same, his training, buying powerful artifacts and the like. The most notable event afterward was the marriage of his daughter to the heir of the Carrington Fortunes, Brian, when she was twenty-five years old. Two years after this however, they were invited to dine with the Medici’s in Milan. Just after the birth of his second and final child, Maximilian (Alexandrina was pregnant during this time, so refused to go to Italy, just this once). Four days after the dinner, Clarabelle died. This almost broke him if anything ever could, though through his own strength he pulled through, and systematically had the Medici family purged. One of the darkest times of his life; though his spirits did lift as he was born a grandson, Paris, through his daughter.
His stroke of misfortune ran even thicker when his eldest son, said he was leaving to go find new prospects abroad. Though he did not stop him, he was quite unsure what that might be. It did seem a bit out of character for Narcissus, whom was always ambitious, but he did not stop him nevertheless. Which left him with Maximilian, and his other pastimes, as well as business. He took on no other mistress, though some witches certainly did try to catch his eye: He was disinterested.
For the next 13 years, he persued his passion for teaching in such schools as Beauxbatons and Durmstang, but after 13 years he wished to return to Britain to persue a career there, and also to be closer to his two sons.
[ Pros and Cons : ]
The ability to turn any situation into one of happiness and mirth is a rare one, and one which Adelais Zercus definately posesses. Despite the loss of his wife some years ago, Adelais has learnt through his friends and remaining family, especially his mother, to live life to the full. Every last minute. He doesn't like to believe in the prospect of saddness and dismay, having gone through it many times in the course of his life, and knows what it can do to a person's soul and to their personality. So he tries very hard to keep everyone's spirits up permanently.
Adelais loves to help people. Through his love for his family and friends, his children in particular, he has developed a deeper understanding of the way humans work. He has grown to see that everyone has unique qualities which makes them special, which Adelais admires 100%. He has developed his ability to connect with people and is the kind of person that you would have no problem to be around or talk to, no matter what the situation. It is this feeling that makes Adelais want to teach young minds, to develop and mould them into the respected and professional wizards and witches that they deserve to be.
A quality of Adelais' that many people find endearing is his amazing memory. He can remember anything that he has ever read or seen. This fuels his craving for knowledge and learning which he then uses to aid others. It also becomes useful when his friends tell him something in confidence or even something like their birthday or something about a relative or close friend, Adelais will always have something to talk about which they can both relate to, which can earn an old man an admirable reputation very easily.
Cons:
Sometimes, Adelais can be taken to be a bit of a fool. Despite his incredible intelligence, he still manages to give dreadful first impressions. Until you get to know Adelais Zercus, you will undubtedly think that he has some sort of mental problem, he talks about the most random things and always acts slightly odd around new people, almost nervous. Although this usually does not deter him from offering anyone he meets a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit!
The ability to accept that he is wrong comes hard to Adelais, due to his background, he has been brought up to believe that he as a Pureblood, is always right. But his experiences in the world were somewhat more widespread than those of his father's, and so he developed an understanding for the opinions of other people and began to realise that sometimes, other people will know better than him about certain things, but the teachings of his father would not go away.
The prospect of being vain is one that has rarely crossed the mind of Adelais Zercus, which is exactly the way it should be kept! For if he ever stopped to think about it, Adelais would find out that he is in fact one of the most vain people ever. Every time he passes a mirror, he has to stop and spend at least 10 minutes checking and fixing his appearance. He spends over an hour and a half getting ready in the morning and more than 2 hours in the shower every night, using all sorts of creams and gels to enhance his appearence. Ok, so he may have slightly feminine qualities, but everyone has something.

[Writing/Role Playing Example:] The beach really wasn’t the best place to take photos or paint or do anything really artistic, despite what people thought. When people say that sand gets into everything, they mean that it gets into everything – including his camera sometimes. Which was more than a little annoying as it meant that he had to take the entire thing apart and clean it piece by piece. There were a lot of parts to a magical camera, so he had to pick it apart, pull out his wand – it took hours. The beach was not a camera friendly place.
That didn’t mean he didn’t have his camera with him though – he scarcely went anywhere without it. It was just safely in his bag with a weak repelling charm on it to protect it from the elements – along with his paints, which he had considered bringing out as well but ended up not because of, again, the sand. So he went to a smaller used medium – charcoal. Adelais wasn’t a big fan of it because of the mess it made on his hands and on the canvas, the fact that deleting something from the canvas was very hard to do. On the plus side though, he got to use his hands, his fingers to actually make the picture, blending like he wasn’t able to do with the other mediums. Not that he was very good at blending, but it was a nice change from it all.
It was pretty late into the year now, a few days short of December so there wasn’t anyone around the beach – it was too cold to go swimming. On a good day, with no rain, you could spend the day at the beach but most didn’t because of the cold winds being swept in from the ocean. For a nice day out, the beach was not where you wanted to go. Fortunately that worked out perfectly for him because it meant that they weren’t any people around to bother him. Perfect for drawing his seascape.
Which is exactly what he had done, sat in the middle of the beach and sketched the moving waves of the water. It wasn’t a very cold day but the strong winds made it seem a lot colder than it actually was – enough to make him rug up in thick cargos, a black sweater over a plain blue tee and a black beanie on his head. He had sketched a few quick pictures of the waves before pulling out his charcoals and getting started on one really good picture.
Once that had been done Adelais realised that the moving sea was calming on him – he hadn’t been around one at school before, only the small lake at his early years at Hogwarts – so he laid back and situated himself on the beach. He wasn’t asleep, or even had his eyes closed, just lying on the beach with his hands folded under his head, knees bent. His bag was lying next to his head so he would be able to see if anyone came near it, and his wand was in his pocket just in case. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath of the ocean air. It was almost perfect here.
