The Three Broomsticks seemed to be more active on this particular day. Waitresses moved to and fro like clockwork, serving fizzy drinks and alcoholic beverages to its patrons. The talk of the bar was a quiet roar as they waited for the event to start. The Three Broomsticks booked a small time band in hopes of bringing a wider revenue for the bar and they were testing them that night. Thankfully, the band was happy enough to play for that night and didn't mind getting payed little.
There were less tables and chairs as most were pushed against the back wall to make room for that band to play. The drumset was up along with the microphone stand and the patrons of the Tree Broomsticks were now drinking their refreshments, waiting for the band to start.
The band was called Wykyd, a local band that began its roots in Hogsmeade. They were an indie rock band that had pop influences yet still managed to retain their cool. The were a group of four guys, who were close friends. The main vocalist of the band, Elric Skrip, was a friend of Sora and was a past classmate back in his home in New York where Sora grew up.
The crowd began to become a little rowdy since the time the band was supposed to start playing quickly came and went. The vocalist was handling a personal problem back at his apartment and was going to be late. The band was unable to start because of theis.
It was through this situation that Sora was now standing up on stage, mic in hand. Apparently, since Sora knew most of the songs of the band by heart and personally wrote one or two of their songs, the band "granted" Sora the liberty to sing one or two songs with them till their singer came.
Sora sighed, wondering how it came to this. He didn't do well with crowds and his singing was decent but was definitely not amazing.
"Alright, sorry for the wait..." Sora began, gripping the mic tightly. Damn, he was already nervous. "I'm Sora. The singer of Wykyd isn't here yet but I will serve as his replacement for the time being."
The crowd awkwardly clapped, seemingly already annoyed for the wait. Sora shakily let out a breath as he looked at the crowd. It was small but it was big enough for Sora to become nervous. He shook his head, getting rid of the nervousness. He'll handle it like a hitwizard, with a calm, tactical analysis before executing flawlessly.
"This is a song I wrote for the band. It was for a girl but I sadly was unable to sing it for her," Sora began, now much calmer, "It'll have more use here anyway."
The band began to play the song. It was slow but fast enough not to dance to. With a deep breath, Sora waited for his cue before he began to softly sing:
I am weak You are strong And we need to belong together Love, never hurt It just tore us apart And I will change You will see I don't care You don't like me anyway I'm a duck You're a swan And you live across the pond
I'm looking for a new kind of mirror The kind that helps me see These whispers, quiet voices From my mind, to your mind Please listen, I am speaking From my mind your mind now...
Sora covered the mic as he fought to catch his breath. This was exhilarating for him! He never really thought he would be singing to a crowd. Hell, he didn't like to toot his own horn but he was actually pretty nice. The guitarist was bursting out a solo with catchy riffs and dexterous fingers that seemed to astonish the crowd. Sora watched as the Three Broomstick's door opened and Elric came in. Sora flashed him a grin as he watched Elric quickly take an open seat and waited for the song to end. Sora brought the mic back to his mouth:
I can barely say what I mean out loud We have others to please, to please I'm awake, for the bell But for now I can tell your hands are cold When I reach for response I barely know my wants I barely know my ne-eds
The tunes seemed to magically bounce off the walls as they continued to play. Sora closed his eyes as the song started to wind down, heading for its grand finale. Images of soft dark brown hair, brown eyes that engulfed him, lovely scent that overpowered him, and sweet voice that lulled him sprang up to his mind. Sora pushed them down. Just like the song, they were unfortunately over:
Now as I cower in un-need protection From vampires and demons and my own reflection Your body's a hotel, I'll stay for the night Please help me get up from this fight All the windows are open I can't close my eyes My heart has been tainted, my lies And we stay up till the sunlight as covered the night I've never been so terrified...of daylight.
They ended with strong applause from the crowd. With a small bow, Sora handed the mic back to their main vocalist as Elric patted him on the back. Giving fake smiles and nods to people in the crowd, Sora made his way through them as he took a seat by the bar and ordered a firewhiskey and nursed it.
The band now began to slowly play a melancholy tune as if the guitars were crying themselves.

The young woman was pressed up against the back wall of the Three Broomsticks. Brittany had taken the time to come into town after hearing about the place having a band play. Since it wasn't too far from the castle, she decided to take a break from her routine and venture into the real world. Although, she had never heard of the band she had really just come for the time to spend amongst people her age. It was different being at Hogwarts again; she loved it but still had trouble seeing her self there for another year. There were so many directions her life could go in, she was eager to explore the options before her.
For now though, she settled for the semi-crowded space inside the bar of Hogsmeade. Brittany had dressed plainly in dark-wash jeans and a crème v-neck tank top. It was only a bar after all and she hadn’t planned on running into anyone particular that she needed to impress. Her dark brown hair flowed down around her shoulders and into her face as she focused her attention to where the band was set up. Glancing briefly at the time, she wondered what exactly was taking so long to get started.
Looking back down, she finally heard the first strings of guitar. A familiar voice soon filled the room. It sounded so clear and proverbial, for a moment she had to regain her sense of where she was. Looking around the dark bar, Brittany’s dark eyes finally fell on the familiar face that matched the voice.
Her jaw dropped.
It had been almost a year. One entire year since she had even spoken or seen Sora. Once her mind rebooted, she began to listen to the lyrics of the song. It was a pretty melody, but the lyrics were disheartening and sad. Her eyes were glued to where he stood, unable to move from where she stood. The young woman’s entire body felt numb and her stomach had jumped to her throat.
Once the song finished, Sora exited the stage and her eyes followed him across the darkness. As he took a seat at the bar, she found her legs moving involuntarily towards him. A voice in her head was shouting for them to stop, and another was egging her to keep going. Leaning over the bar just a few feet away, she ordered a drink quietly, always watching him from her peripheral vision.
“That was quite good…” Brittany muttered, her face cast down on her hands that were folded in front of her.

Sora swirled his firewhiskey in his hand, the small ice cubes sounding like bells as they clinked against the clear glass. Firewhiskey had become his one relief through the cold nights. It was warm and dulled his memories, especially after a hard day's work of hitwizarding. Sora snorted; he always tended to make-up words once he had the taste of firewhiskey in his mouth.
Reaching into his jeans, he tossed a galleon onto the table. Sora was wearing a dark green shirt with the name 'Prophecy Forgotten', one of Sora's favorite bands, and comfortable black denim jeans. He went to the Three Broomsticks due to Elric's badgering and didn't really get a chance to put on any fancy duds.
He was about to get and head to his flat when he heard an all to familiar voice. He slowly swiveled his body and turned around, his green eyes meeting her brown ones.
Brittany.
His features were stoic, coming from his job as a hitwizard, where betraying emotions showed weakness, and the natural calm firewhiskey brought. Unfortunately, his eyes betrayed all of his hidden emotions. Confusion, guilt and longing. It had been much too long since he last saw her. She had dwelt in his dreams and even his nightmares but he hadn't personally seen her for about a year. It was very ironic that he sang the very song he wrote for her but wasn't able to sing to her yet here she was, the only one who he didn't want to hear it.
"Thanks..." Sora said quietly as if suddenly shy. His eyes unknowingly studied her. Damn, she looked good. The year was certainly was amazing for her. Even in regular clothes, she glowed. His heart thumped painfully against his chest. Sora willed it to slow, feeling as if it was going to burst out. His jade green eyes slowly went back up and focused on hers. He cursed loudly in his mind, he couldn't believe he just blatantly checked her out like that. He was supposed to be a Slytherin, doing things subtly and on the down-low.
"What are you doing here?" he blurted out before mentally smacking himself. Smooth. "It's...been awhile. How have you been, Brittany?"

Brittany felt his gaze upon her, and she resisted turning fully towards him. She had taken in everything from afar and didn't know if she had what it took to look at him so close once more. She knew that once her eyes left the counter, everything would come rushing back. Their moments, their memories, their past. It was all so distant, but so clear at the same time. It hadn't been forever, it had only felt like it. She forced her self to swallow the lump in her throat in attempt to calm her self. It didn’t work, she was nervous as hell being only a few feet away from him.
She was relieved that she had put on make-up and something decent before going out tonight. It was a good outfit to run into your ex in. Finally, her brown eyes slid over to Sora and made their way up to his face. His look was confusing and she couldn’t decipher what exactly he might be thinking. It had been so long. She wasn’t sure that she even knew the person standing before her anymore.
At his abrupt question, she was taken aback. It made her angry. Was she not allowed to go out? It was a public domain. Who was he to tell her-and like that her angry thoughts were cut off as he amended what he said. Her annoyance faded to a dull hum as she thought of a correct way to answer his question.
There wasn’t one, so she just went with the truth.
“I have been okay,” Brittany answered quietly. “You?”

Aw damn, he already pissed her off. A year of not seeing each other and it took a mere twenty seconds for him to annoy her. Sora had been with Brittany for a long time, long enough for him to recognize most of her little habits. That brief flash on her face that seemed so quick almost left Sora to think that he imagined it. But he didn't.
The melancholy music the band played finished, the crowd clapping as the band started to play another song. After a few chords from the guitar and the tempo of Elric's voice, Sora knew that they were playing a soft love ballad.
Sora's heart continued its painful tattoo against his chest. Damn, it had only been one year of not meeting and here he was, acting like a sniveling little first year Hufflepuff who had set foot in Hogwarts for the first time. Whatever happened to that noble Slytherin who walked downed the halls of Hogwarts as if he owned it?
"I'm alright, life has been alright." Sora replied awkwardly, not really knowing what else to say. It was weird; he had always thought that whenever he met Brittany again, he would have a lot of things to say or ask her. Nothing was coming to his mind. It was totally, blissfully blank, and it annoyed Sora to no end.
"What have you been up to since Hogwarts?" He asked, being entirely serious in the question. He wasn't sure what she had been up to since their break-up.
Break-up; that phrase left an odd and hollow feeling within Sora. He didn't know what to make of it. "You wanna get out of here and go for a walk?" he asked, his eyes looking oddly tired, "I could use a bit of air. This place is...stifling."

Brittany felt the tension between the two of them. They were adults, both grown up and into their own lives yet they could barely speak to each other. Of course, she had no idea what made it so difficult for him. On her end, she was bursting to give him a hug or something to break the stiffness of movements between them. However, she prevented her self from making such moves. It would complicate things. Touching. What a laugh. They could barely talk to each other. No way.
At his next question, she had good solid answers. There had been changes since he had last spoken to her. New occupation, living quarters, and goals. It was new material. That was positive. Before she could begin, he asked if she wanted to get out of the crowded room. Her head began to spin. There would be people on the streets, but walking outside at night was a much more personal setting. It would be the two of them, together. The crowd around them was safe. But when had she ever been known for taking the safe option.
Plus, the night air might help clear her head of all of these random, aimless thoughts. Nodding curtly, she tossed the amount owed for her untouched drink and turned on her heel. Locating the nearest exit, she found her self crossing the threshold of the Three Broomsticks.
Suddenly panicked, she threw a quick glance behind her to make sure he was following. Relieved to see the green shirt following, she waited for him to make it out of the noise before beginning.
“I stopped working for the Prophet. Got bored, but they told me I could have my job back if I ever wanted it.” Brittany started then continued, “I started working at Hogwarts as the librarian since then, which is not a permanent position but it will do for now.”
Feeling the lioness courage inside of her she found her teasing tone hidden down inside and stopped abruptly telling him with a pointed finger, “If you make fun, I shall curse you to Antarctica.”

Sora followed the retreating back of Brittany as they made their way through the crowd. A few of them had taken to dancing to the music that the band was currently playing. Sora's eyes sought Elric as he gave a nod to the vocalist. Elric gave a small wave as Sora made his way through the crowd. He agilely avoided the more intoxicated dancers as they whirled around, spilling their drinks as they twirled around like out of controlled tops.
Sora smiled as the cold night air hit his face. It refreshed him and awoke him, something that the bar couldn't have done. All the thoughts and questions in his head seemingly disappeared into the night as Sora hurried to catch up with the brunette lioness.
He was shocked that Brittany quit the Daily Prophet. Sora had read some of her articles in passing and he had to admit that they were pretty good. She maintained a sense of objectivity within her words that Sora found refreshing than some of the biased and lackadaisically reporting that some other wizarding papers did.
"A librarian, really?" Sora asked, eyebrows raising. He definitely found that interesting. She left the Prophet because she was bored and became a...librarian? It didn't make sense to Sora yet he didn't really care. The fact that she was librarian brought up so many images to Sora's head. It was kind of...hot. Sora shook his head, brushing away the perverted scenarios that were playing in the Slytherin's head.
"Curse me?" Sora questioned, a small grin playing on his face. So she wanted to play, did she? Did she forget she was talking to a Slytherin? "I thought you librarians were all into the spanking with the rulers instead of cursing for punishment. Or am I wrong?"
Just as the lioness flashed her claws, the snake flashed his fangs.

Brittany threw her head back a bit as she laughed at his joke. Those were not exactly the images she had floating around in her mind. Although she found his visions absolutely hilarious. Totally wrong though. She shouldn't be thinking those kinds of scenarios. She just shouldn't. It lead into too many things. Things she wasn't sure she wanted to tread through. Now she needed to stop thinking these things, so she breathed in and shook her head.
"Psh..we have upgraded." Brittany remarked curtly.
With that she began to walk along the cobblestone street again. It relaxed her a bit more to know that she and him could still throw out little quips here and there. It eased the tension a bit. The young woman found that she was happy to realize this. She didn't know why. Or maybe she did, but didn't want to come to terms with it. It was just all so overwhelming. Running into him, hearing him sing. She had never known he could sing.
That song. The lyrics. It was so close, so relatable. Momentarily she wondered if it could have anything to do with her, with them. But she stopped those thoughts before they could come.
"Sora," Brittany started letting his name resonate for a moment. "What have you been doing lately?"

Sora listened to their footstep as their shoes met cobblestones. He always like that sound, Sora didn't know why. It had a sort of calming effect on him oddly enough. Sora absolutely had no idea where they were going. They were starting to pass houses that he hadn't seen before. He was also pretty sure that Brittany didn't know the exact destination of where they were going as well. They were just letting their feet do the walking since it seems their brains were off on vacation.
Sora turned and looked at Brittany as she asked what he had been up to. This simple and straightforward question was easy enough to answer, though he wasn't sure what he wanted to answer it with. His first thought was to lie to her. To tell her that his life was going splendidly and that he was doing all the things that he wanted to do. Why Brittany, I've been doing everything under the sun since we broke up! My life has been fun, fun, FUN!
Lies, utter lies. It wouldn't feel right at all if he lied to her straight to her face. It would feel too...Slytherin.
They passed an empty playground. He stood still in front of the entrance. It contained a swingset that held two swings, a tangle of a jungle gym, and a large metal slide which looked imposing in the dark. Sora smiled, noticing the effects muggles had on wizarding society.
Sora motioned for Brittany to follow him as he took a spot on one of the two swings. He began to slowly swing himself to and fro, like he did when he was a little kid.
"My life has been strangely monotone," Sora finally replied to Brittany, tilting his head as he stared at her, "Doing the same thing over and over again gets to you."
"In fact, the high time of the past three months was tonight." Sora revealed with a small sigh, running a hand through his fiery hair. "What about you? What have you been getting up to after...us?" he ended quietly. After us; it tasted like ashes in his mouth.

Brittany occuppied the other swing beside him. Normally she would have taken off and started competing to go as high as she could. However, she was awaiting his answer. It was weird, like being on pins and needles to see what he had been doing. Part of her hoped that he had been having a great life, full of excitement and finding someone terrific. The other selfish part hoped that he had done nothing of the sort. How childish of her. It was so wrong yet she couldn't help but feel those little sprouts of selfishness.
She knew he had kissed Shay. That was a long time ago though. She wasn't even sure the two had spoken since that incident. Past that she knew nothing. So when he told her that life had been monotonous, something inside her welled up. Brittany tried to beat back the happiness she got from his words. It was so wrong. However, she didn't have to try hard to get rid of it with his next words.
The young woman had two options and neither were very happy-making. The truth held something she knew Sora didn't want to hear, but anything else was being dishonest. She could not do that to him, it felt impossible to do so with him. Wrong. The wording was key. Then, he said it. Those two words that made a lump appear in her throat and made her heart sink to her stomach. It was the inevitable; after us. There was no other way to put it. There was no us, no them. There was Sora and there was Brittany.
Brittany kicked the gravel beneath her feet and said, "Not a lot more."
There had to be more coming than that! "Use your words..." She chanted to herself. It would be unfair to write off what happened with Nathan. She hadn't seen him since that night. It had been almost two months. There was obviously something not right. Something not there. However, all of that was a bit complicated to explain to your ex-boyfriend.
"There was one thing that made a blip on my radar of activity but that has since died..." Brittany's voice was just above a whisper. Her brown eyes moved to watch Sora's face, his reaction. She hoped she had framed the words respectively to both parties.

Blips? Sora's mind whirled as he tried to make sense of what this meant. Suddenly a bright light bulb clicked on in his head. Oh, blip. That's what she meant by it, of course. It had been a year after all. He didn't expect for her to stop dating, after all, she was still very beautiful. Hell, even he had that small kiss with Shay...
Shay. Oh. Dear. Merlin. Did Brittany know about her? Of course she knew, they were practically still best friends probably. Damn, apparently the hole he kept digging himself in could indeed get bigger.
Sora pushed those thoughts away. He would deal with it when and if it came. Slytherins were always good at dodging questions.
"Blips, eh." Sora remarked, continuing to swing to and fro. His hands held the cold chain links holding his swing, feeling their movement as he continued to swing, "I'm guessing those blips were in some form romantic?"
The snake inside him hissed, its coils tightening as if it was about to strike. Why was she telling him this. Did she want to she him cut? Did she want to see if it bled? To see if his cold heart could still bleed? That wound had long since scabbed over, never healing. It would hurt too much if she started to pick at it.
Sora pushed those thoughts away as well. He buried the snake deep within himself once again. Brittany wouldn't purposely hurt him. She was a Gryffindor, and Gryffindors didn't do that, even to Slytherins.
Sora licked his lips. Could he do this? Would he do this? Sora mentally scoffed; of course he would. He wasn't no bleeding Hufflepuff. He didn't overanalyze things like a Ravenclaw. He also didn't charge in like a Gryffindor. He was a Slytherin, through and through. He was ambitious and was one of the most cunning in his house. He was going to do this, and he was going to do it with style and pride.
"T-There was a small blip on my radar of activity as well. I'm pretty sure you know about that blip. I also want to tell you that it didn't lead to anything," Sora said, his voice not being much louder than a whisper.

"Blip," Brittany corrected him almost instantaneously, "It was singular."
She didn't want him to think she had gone traipsing about looking for men to hook up with. That was not her intention in the least. She could never do that. She hated grey areas. That was what hooking up put you in, grey area. Not that it mattered, she knew where she stood and that was what counted. However, as Sora spoke of her blip leading to romanticism she held back instantly correcting him once more. There was no need to be snappy.
Instead she was about to calmly explain when he began to speak again. This time he spoke of himself. Of course, she already knew of this because Shay had practically told her the next day. She hadn't been angry but more in shock that either of them would do that to her. Brittany and Sora hadn't been dating but there were rules. Girl code. No kissing best friends ex-boyfriends that dated for over a year. It was written some where, she was sure of it. Apparently they had missed the memo.
However, she had gotten over that incident fairly quickly. After all, she barely had a clause to stay angry. Especially since Sora seemed to disappear shortly afterwards. When he continued and reassured her that it lead to nothing she couldn't help but feel her chest swell. Brittany already knew this, but the fact that he cared enough to make sure that she knew was overwhelming. She was grateful that he was that kind of man.
The young woman looked over at Sora's face, noticing his volume decrease considerably. "Well then, we seem to have something in common." Brittany told him, "It didn't go very far for me either."
She was dying to know what exactly he was thinking. There was no way that he was handling this topic of conversation so calmly. She wasn't even able to. Her mind was racing with different questions and thoughts. Picking up some elevation, she let the cool night air hit her square in the face. Closing her eyes, Brittany breathed in silently to clear out her mind and reorganize her thoughts.
"Where have you been?" Brittany's eyes remained closed, but her voice was clear and steady.

So there had only been one blip in her life since they broke up, and just like him it didn't lead to anything long lasting. Sora would've been deluding himself if he said he wasn't overjoyed that things didn't work out with Brittany and the unnamed man. He felt ashamed that petty feelings such as that arose within himself. Sora knew it was wrong but as of right now, he really didn't care.
Sora continued to slowly swing to and fro, the rusting chains making a soft creaking that echoed through the quiet night of Hogsmeade. He was thoroughly surprised that they were both talking calmly. He half expected both of them to start yelling at each other and/or throwing things around. By throwing things around, Sora mostly meant Brittany throwing things at Sora. He didn't know why but he mentally prepared for that "confrontation" around sixth months ago. The fact that they weren't doing such things showed how much they matured after leaving Hogwarts. Their problems happened in the end of their years in Hogwarts, back at school. They were adults now and such trivial things like a breakup back at school seemed to be all in the past now. The air of change was now blowing; it was great time for new beginnings.
Of course, it would be inconsiderate to forget their past. No, never forgotten. Their past couldn't be washed away like a stain on a shirt. It would always be there, like a permanent tattoo for both parties to always see.
"I've been...around," Sora said mystically, finally getting around to answer her question. He chuckled to himself silently; he could be such a drama queen sometimes. He shook that disturbing thought away, "The Ministry has placed me in Knockturn Alley and the border between England and Scotland during my course as a hitwizard. There had been questionable activity in both parts."
"I...I didn't want there to be a one year separation between us," Sora finally said, stopping his swinging. "I wanted to see you again weeks after we..." he couldn't bring himself to say the word. He stayed silent, looking straight forward,
"It felt too soon. I let the moments built up till it became a year where we didn't see each other again."

The words, "You didn't even try to stay in touch..." flashed across her mind. However, her filtering process caught the words before they could escape. Brittany hadn't tried to do so either. There had been times when she started a letter to Sora, but it had never made it past the beginning greeting. She couldn't rightfully point her finger in his direction when three were pointing right back at her.
As he answered her question, she felt her grip tighten around the chains that held the swing up. His occupation was something that made her anxious, it was so mysterious. Honestly, it scared her. She feared what might happen to him one day. It was such a nervous-making career. Reasoning with her self she figured that he was still her friend. She could be worried about him and his safety, it was still a concern of hers. It would be rude to not care. Yeah.
As he came to a stop, she continued to let her swing rock back and forth. Although, she made no effort to keep the swinging motion going. Eventually she would stop. The year had been an interesting one without Sora around even. She had prepared a huge speech to give to him just after she found out about the incident between him and Shay. Brittany had planned to 'accidentally' run into him at Wendelring and light into him. However, she always seemed to miss him and eventually the fire behind her thoughts melted. Once that happened there was no point in even saying them anymore.
Now the position that left them in was an awkward one. One that Brittany cared to think about a little less than she did. With his final words, her swing lost momentum and she came to a stop just as he had before. His words were so soft and honest. She exhaled and finally opened her eyes to look over at the former Slytherin.
"Do you ever think about what would have happened if I hadn't left?" Brittany asked randomly. Not missing a beat, she followed with, "If I hadn't went to go work things out with my family and stuff. If I had stayed here......with you..."

Her words echoed hollowly in his mind, leaving a cold, tingling sensation running down his spine. When she asked him if he ever thought of what would've happened if she never went back home to patch things up with her family, his heart thumped dully against his chest. During the first couple of months after their break-up, that same very thought had plagued his mind every night, before he went to sleep. He had lived in the world of what-ifs during those months. Some of the times, it had actually prevented him from sleeping.
"Always..." Sora whispered silently, running a tired hand through as his jade green eyes shone morosely as he stared at the half-crescent moon. His one word answer was short yet it held all of the emotion that Sora felt. His answer represented how much sleep he lost over it, how saddened he was over the whole thing, and he wished he was able to take it all back. He turned over the Brittany, watching as her brown hair gleamed in the moonlight. He didn't need to voice everything he felt about her question. Even without words, she knew what he felt. His words transcended over letters and syllables and sound. It became a feeling in itself.
Sora slowly stood up, walking carefully as feet pattered over the gravel of the playground. He stood in front of Brittany, hands to his sides as he simply stared down at her,
"...Where do we go from here, Britt?"
