Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] David Aleister Pierce
[ Character Gender: ] Male
[Character Age:] 31
[ Position: ] Ancient Runes
[ Country of Citizenship: ] England
[ Physical Character Description: ] Tall and swarthy, David is a handsome man with dark blondish-brown hair worn long and roguish, and deep, piercing blue eyes. His fingers are callused from guitar playing, and, though few have ever seen it, he has a tattoo of sheet music around his right upper bicep he got sometime in his mid-teens, when he had aspirations of being the guitarist in a rock band. He has numerous small scars from his years of fieldwork and, because he can become easily absorbed in his studies, it’s not uncommon to see him unshaven for days at a time. He considers himself a “laid back” kind of guy, and hates wearing professors’ robes; it’s not unusual to see him tugging or fiddling with them uncomfortably class. When in his personal quarters or outside the school, he wears jeans or dark slacks with a dress shirt that more often than not has the sleeves rolled up to the elbows and the top couple of buttons undone. He is not a trendy guy, he simply likes being comfortable. He has several silver rings spread out over his fingers that he’s picked up through his travels, each with different symbols around them.
[ Personality Character Description: ] David is a Hufflepuff alumnus and all-around nice guy; he likes to smile, he likes to help, and he likes just about everyone, even Slytherins. He is a student of ancient languages and cultures, and a bit of a boho; he loves music and literature, and thinks in a somewhat abstract manner. He is a bachelor, not because he is a reserved or unsociable man, but because he has the tendency to become so deeply absorbed in his studies that it oftentimes overrides his social life. He has an adventurous streak and light case of wanderlust that occasionally makes his stay at Hogwarts difficult, and he stalks the halls at night when he can’t settle down. He is an enthusiastic teacher who tries his best to get his students interested in runes by giving entertaining as well as factual lectures and assignments; it is still a difficult task, considering the complex and sometimes tedious nature of the subject. He has come to accept the fact that not all students have the passion for runes that he does, and though he does suffer somewhat of a personal injury when he finds someone napping in class, he tries to take it in stride. Not that he takes offense easily; he just hates feeling as if he’s failed at something (read: overachiever). Sometimes awkward, sometimes socially inept, he is nonetheless a patient man who loves what he does.
[ History: ] David was born the first and only child to Amelia and Jonathon Pierce, a middle-class family residing in a middle-sized flat just four blocks down from the Ministry of Magic. Jonathon descended from the pureblood Pierce clan, and worked as an “Obliviator” at said Ministry, in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. Amelia Thompson, a muggle and the youngest of three, worked as a seamstress at the ladies’ dress shop on the other side of the city. They met one fall morning when Jonathon was called to the dress shop after a newly licensed witch apparated there by mistake and splinched herself something fierce. While the agent from the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad sorted the young lady out, Jonathon was charged with wiping Amelia’s memory of the incident. Amazed by her beauty, he returned the next day to see her, claiming to need a tear in his sister’s favorite gown mended. They struck up a romance which quickly turned into love, and they were married the following summer among well-wishes from the Thompsons’ and outrage from the entire Pierce family. Jonathon was promptly disowned, something that didn’t bother him too much as he was an only child and was never close with his parents to begin with, and he set about introducing Amelia to the wizarding world and all its wonders. By the time David made his entrance into the world some two years later, the two had settled down into married life quite comfortably.
David grew up in that same comfortable environment, peppered with often visits from his two Uncles (Amelia’s older brothers), and enjoyed a normal, happy childhood. He was an optimistic child; he enjoyed helping his mum around the house and taking trips to the Ministry with his dad on rare occasions. It was on his fifth birthday that his parents took him to the British Museum for the first time, and it was then that he fell in love with learning. Each exhibit was a fascinating new world to explore, and David couldn’t get enough. He spent the following years gathering as much knowledge as he could about the past and visited the museum so often the ticket-tellers came to know him by name. The summer before his eleventh birthday heralded a new adventure when his letter finally came, and he began his Hogwarts education as a Hufflepuff in the fall of 1987. He was a bit of a nerd in those years, preferring to study rather than socialize; he made a few close friends, kept to himself, and even played a few seasons of Quidditch as a Keeper for his house. He decided to specialize in Ancient Runes, threw himself into the subject completely, and managed to get mostly O’s and E’s on his N.E.W.Ts. He graduated in 1994, wide-eyed and hopeful, and managed to secure an apprenticeship with one of Germany’s great Runic Masters of the day, Ulrich Von Hagen.
He moved to Germany, keeping in touch with his family and few friends through owl post as he traveled with his mentor around Europe to continue his studies. He was returning from deep Eastern Russia, just having finished his apprenticeship, at the time Harry Potter defeated the Dark Lord at Hogwarts in 1998, and didn’t even know it had happened until several days after the fact when he finally returned to London. He met up with an old friend who was beginning a bright future at the Ministry in the Department of Magical Games and Sports and who agreed to share his flat. With a place to stay, and in an ironic twist of fate, David landed a job as an Assistant Translator with the British Museum, where he stayed for the next several years. The resignation of a good portion of the Hogwarts staff opened the Ancient Runes teaching position and David took a chance and applied.
[ Pros and Cons : ] Quick to catch a joke and to deliver one, David loves to laugh and to cheer people up by making them laugh as well. When it comes to problem-solving, he prefers to mull over the facts of a situation carefully and act after making a well educated decision; however, he doesn’t let that get in the way of getting involved when there is an urgent problem at hand, he rolls up his sleeves and tries to do what he can. He has a sincere willingness to help, but can be naïve and has found himself being taken advantage of for his kindness more than once. He prides himself on patience, but is not above losing his temper, which can be nasty. On top of it all he has the tendency to overload himself with work and sometimes finds himself ill with lack of sleep.

David strummed the notes one after the other, trying out different combinations for the next chord. He’d pause in contemplation after each, listening with a practiced ear for the right sound. Finally deciding on the right one, he leaned forward over the guitar to pick up the quill and scribble it in on the hastily scratched out music staff. Then the process began again; play, listen, play again, listen some more, scribble a few notes, repeat. It had been going on for hours.
Dave didn’t mind. He was in his element, and he could whittle away more than a few hours out here by the lake on a quiet summer day before the students arrived. He loved sitting in his quarters pouring over parchments of runic symbols, and he loved to sit in the sun and play just as much, basking in a different kind of solitude that was just as rewarding. Letting the guitar rest across his lap, he stretched out on the grass, relaxing and gazing lazily up at the sky. The clouds were rolling by at the same slow rate his mind was, and he found himself gradually drifting off to sleep as a gentle breeze rustled the scrolls of music at his side.
