Pat had known about the fire, but the other news came as quite a shock to him. His parents had told him stories of the Dark Mark and the people behind it, but he had always figured all the stories were over a long while ago. But now it was back. Pat stood for a moment, his mind completely blank, staring at the floor.
He shook his head and looked around to see if anyone needed anything. Allegra looked unwell, but she had enough people around to help her out already. Kellen looked pretty well off, and Hiro... looked like he was going to barf. Then he heard someone ask for help in potions. He looked around and saw the first year just finishing his sentence.
Pat walked up to Kyle and said "Hey, I'll help ya. Potions isn't my best subject, but, I'll try." He smiled at the firstie "Oh, by the way, I'm Pat." He said, extending his hand.

"Just... just stay away from the windows," she said a little more weakly this time, rubbing at her eyes. The smoke was starting to give her a headache (though she may have been imagining it in her stress), but she really didn't want to add claustrophobia into the mix of anxiety. She was glad Kyle and Patrick had at least found something to keep them occupied. "Just stay away from the windows." It was really all she could think of saying at the moment.

Kyle heard Allegra's "Stay away from window" mantra and frowned. She didn't notice all people had indeed stopped looking out the window. She was simply saying those words over and over.
"Kyle," the boy replied and shook Pat's hand. Again, he wondered if he really should work on his potions (not a very enjoyable task) or if he should create a big enough distraction (explosive potions were VERY easy to mix, just throw in everything) to keep others occupied. He decided he would play nice, for now.
"I can't cut my ingredients into perfect cube," he continued saying. "I mean, what's the point really? They are going into the potions and become all mushy anyways."

Kellen needed a way to distract Allegra, without making it seem like that's what he was doing. Maybe she just needed to focus on something else until Drew got back--that seemed like it should work.
"Hey, Allegra," he started in a low, conspiratorial tone. "Oh, hi, Lily, welcome back. Allegra, I need your help with something. Hiro's...not feeling too well, I think. We should talk to him, you know, keep him distracted until the fire's over, okay?"

Allegra nodded back as she bit her lip. She knew she was being ridiculous. She knew there was nothing to worry about. She knew she was taking her irrational fear of fire and jumping to conclusions about the missing Ravenclaws. If anything, the Dark Mark should aliviate fears about her absent brother. He was a pure blood after all.
She took a deep breath, clearing her head and calming down. She knew exactly what Kellen was trying to do and she appreciated it. She needed to get a grip and do her job.
She took another deep, cleansing breath, forcing herself to feel better before looking up at Kellen and smiling. "I think that sounds like a good idea," she answered.

Though Hiro looked and felt completely out of it he was still paying attention to what was going on in the room. He made a mental note to give the boy named Kyle something out of his secret stash for his clever idea, maybe he'd even cook him a meal. Of course he couldn't be paralyzed from his memories when he did this, unlike now. He would have opened up his mouth to say something if it weren't for the fact that if he did he'd probably throw up, and it didn't feel like his vocal cords were connected anymore.

Kellen smiled back at Allegra, with a sneaking suspicion that she knew what he was doing, distracting her. That was fine--better, even.
"Hey, Hiro?" Kellen said gently as they made their way over to the comfy chair. "How are you doing, buddy?"

"Nice to meet you." Said pat, shaking Kyle's hand. He listened to Kyle's difficulty and thought for a moment. He had learned a way to make cubes that were pretty near perfect, but he wasn't sure if it's what they taught here. He had learned it while he had been home-schooled.
"All right. Here's a little trick of the trade I learned from me Mum." He said, grabbing some parchment, a ruler, and a pair of scissors and sitting down in a chair by a table. "This only works with some materials, though, it doesn't work very well with... gelatinous ingredients. Let's say you need five cubic centimeters of... something. So, you take a piece of parchment and a ruler and you draw a box on that paper which is 5 centimeters by five centimeters, right?" Pat demonstrated, doing exactly what he said as he said it. He looked up at Kyle to make sure he was following.
At this point, Pat pulled out a piece of chocolate from his pocket, unwrapped it, and laid it on the table. "And you take the little square and cut it out of the parchment. Now you lay it on top, on a corner, of course, of your ingredient, and cut around the square." He said, doing so on his piece of chocolate. "Then you take your chunk and turn it to the side, and lay the square at the top, or bottom, it doesn't matter, line it up just right, cut off below the square and... tada! A perfect, or near perfect, cube." Pat said, taking the chocolate cube and setting it in the middle of the table.
"Got all that?" Pat asked, hoping he wasn't going to fast to understand. "Now you try." He said, passing Kyle all the materials.

Kyle accepted the offered material with a look of disbelief. Pat definitely got the "this method only works with some materials" part right. This method wouldn't work with gelatinous material, nor any material you would dread to put your hands on, which pretty much included most of the materials used in potions. And what if you had to make 1cm cube? He would be stuck in the dungeon forever.
In all honesty, Kyle couldn't care less if he had spheres instead of cubes. The fine art of potions didn't interest him. He only started this topic to keep everyone otherwise occupied. It was until then he realized Pat probably shared his idea. This tedious task would definitely keep everyone very busy. Perhaps they could even get everyone competing and see who could produce the perfect-est cube. Yes, that's gotta be Pat's motive. Yes.
"Sure thing," he said with such enthusiasm that was almost comical. "I wonder who among us all could cut the best 1mm cube?"

Allegra took a seat on the arm of the chair and put one hand on Hiro's arm. She wasn't sure what to say, wasn't sure what he needed to hear, but she wanted him to know he had people there who cared about him.

Ash's eyes flicked open, unusually wide and set her hands down-- as if she had just realized something. She had read tons about the darkmark and it had been so many years since one had shown up... so could this be a spoof? Or was this for real? She glanced around the room, and it seemed pretty filled up... but- it seemed that something was missing. Up until now, she had blocked everyone out and it felt as if she was in this room by herself.. like it was silent. But now, she began to become aware of everything.
Where was Drew? And Arianna? Ash bit her lip but the traces of worry slowly faded from her face. They would be here; sure the two seemed to get into quite a few number of predicaments but eachtime they would always come through. Ash smiled and began to hum softly.
