Arianna's nose scrunched slightly. She could see where Drew was coming from and felt a slight relief that it was for her that he was doing this, but it wasn't enough to make her feel good about the whole thing.
"Maybe...maybe if we talked more," Arianna suggested quietly. "I don't always know I'm doing something that upsets you, either. I...I just don't like feeling like you're mad at me for something and I have no clue what I did. That's how I've felt all year, but anytime I tried to talk to you...you said everything was okay."

"I thought... I just..." he swallowed hard and fell silent again. Anything he said would be bad at this point. He had either been lying or he had been clueless to what was actually going on.

Arianna sniffed. This conversation wasn't going anywhere and she was getting more exhausted as the night wore on. At this point she wouldn't be surprised if she slept the whole day through. IF she could get to sleep without anymore nightmares.
Moving her hand as Juniper stretched out and placed his paws on her leg, Arianna petted the cat again. It was too bad he couldn't tell them what to do.

"I just thought... I just thought that this way would be better. I wouldn't say something stupid and you wouldn't get mad at me," he mumbled as he kicked at the rug and looked at his fingers.

"Stupid?" Arianna turned her head and blinked at Drew. "Like what...OUCH!"
The girl jumped slightly when Juniper attempted to sharpen his little claws on her leg. Arianna frowned. The kitten hadn't ever done that before. Certainly not on purpose. Grumbling under her breath, Arianna pushed Juniper aside and rubbed at the sore spot on her leg. She'd probably find a small scratch there later.

Drew jumped when she cried out, sure he had done something to upset her at first. When he realized that hadn't been the case, he frowned at her. "What happened?" he asked, wondering why she had shoved Juni aside so quickly.

"Juni....He scratched me," Arianna replied with a small shrug. It wasn't any big deal. She'd been scratched before. She wasn't about to let the kitten back onto her lap anytime soon, though. He could stay with Drew for now.

"You okay?" he asked, the question coming more automatically than out of any real concern. While he wanted to make sure she wasn't seriously hurt, he knew cat scratches were a standard part of owning a kitten.

"It's just a scratch," Arianna shrugged again. She didn't want to talk about cat scratches at the moment. They really weren't that important. What she really wanted to do was figure out whether the problems she and Drew had could be fixed. She still couldn't figure out what caused those problems, though.
"So...what...what 'stupid' things did you say that got me so upset?" she tried to get them back on course with the question, feeling rather stupid herself for being unable to remember.

"I don... I don't know..." Drew answered, now so tired and confused that his voice was starting to crack. "Last time we had a fight, you said I called you stupid and I don't think I did. At least, I didn't realize I had..."

"Last time we...." Arianna couldn't even remember the last time they had fought. It had been so long ago. She had thought Drew would have forgotten about it by now, too. "I don't remember.....I know...I know the last time we talked...When Lily sent you that letter....You said I should have known better than to eat the food at the dance...Yeah, I did feel like I was being called naive, but...I was already upset about the whole thing. Completely embarassed myself in front of the whole school and beat up one of my best friends...And she was the only one who would even talk to me afterwards....I'm still a little sensitive about the whole thing is all. I'm sorry if I jumped to conclusions."

"I didn't... " he sniffed again. "I didn't mean you were stupid. "I don't think you're stupid." it was exactly the kind of incident he was worried about. He said or did something and made her feel awful when that had never been his intention.

"I know," Arianna bit her lip. It was her fault, wasn't it? She took something wrong and got mad at Drew. Then he felt like he had said the wrong thing and made Arianna feel like crap. And that was why he thought they shouldn't be friends anymore. It was Ari's fault. Not Drew's. "I was upset and I shouldn't have said that you said that. I'm sorry."

"But it always happens," Drew mumbled. "I say something wrong and you get mad at me and then we fight and I don't even know what I did except that whatever it was, it was me that started it. I don't like making you upset." He looked up just enough to let his eyes meet hers. Every other solution he had come up with ahdn't worked. Was it no wonder he thought this would be the best for both of them?

Arianna looked away from Drew. She knew it happened the other way, too. She'd always say something that put him off and know what or why it had happened.
"Maybe you're right," Arianna spoke reluctantly as though someone else were making her say what came out of her mouth. "Maybe....maybe we shouldn't...."
Her voice cracked. There was no way she could say it.
