Dear Matty,
I know we don't write to each other often, and so I'm not surprised if you're... well, surprised as well. I hope this letter does reach you, despite the fact that this owl looks pretty dodgy. I hope this doesn't reach you too late either, but I couldn't be sure. I knew that Zeal would be able to deliver our letters in the future to come, but I wasn't sure how to reach you before hand. In fact, our parents don't even know I'm writing to you. Odd, you think? Well, yes, the reason for this letter is a bit strange, but I'll explain more in a little bit. First off, how's school going? Your dad mentioned that you have some major exams this year, so how's the study for that panning out? I can only imagine. my year ten certificate was stressful enough, let alone without magic. Also, how's Quidditch? Being Captain must be tops, I'm sure. Now that the usual family stuff is out of the way, I suppose you ought to know the reason I'm writing to you.
Matt, you're my sister, and I love you as much as any brother can, despite the fact that we're not blood relatives. You've always been honest and patient with us, even when I was a jerk to you at first, so, I owe this to you. I have another brother. Meaning, so do you. His name is Oliver Baxter, and he just turned Twenty. For the past five years he's been living in America with my dad. When our folks split up, my mum god custody of me, and my dad got custody of Oliver. Because my mum and dad don't speak often, neither did Oliver and me and mum. Your dad knew from the start, but we didn't tell you. Because honestly... we didn't know if Oliver would ever come back into our lives, dad didn't really want him to.
Getting more to the point, he's moved back here. He said that he's ready to move on, as all of us have - including my dad, so he saw now reason in having no contact with us anymore. I know our parents didn't know how, or when to tell you about this, because they felt guilty and bad about keeping it from you. Thats why I thought it would be easier if I told you know. I went and saw Oliver the other day, and he's really a top guy, more so than before, even. I told him about you, and he was thrilled at the fact of having a little sister. I know you may be angry, or upset... but maybe not. If you are though, know that we were doing this to protect you from feeling like you were missing out on something you were never going to get. Up until now, we have no idea how Oliver may have turned out. We justed wanted to be sure, and be safe.
We know you, and we didn't want you to get hurt. I guess that sums up everything. I know you'll understand though, because... well, you're Matty. Theres a picture in closed of him, I thought it may help you get used to the idea of another brother.
We all send our love,
Jamie.
And there she sat. Matty's skin, that was only covered by a pair of blue and white cotton boxers and a loose white tee-shirt, formed goosebumps, despite the fire in front of her. This... this was more of a change than the fifth year had ever expected to receive in a letter from her step-brother. The teenager's hands were shaky, as she let the letter drop onto her lap, and fumbled with finding the picture of this Oliver guy. He looked a fair amount like Jamie... and Ellie for that matter. She could hardly believe her eyes, as she quickly scanned through the letter again. Another brother. Matty didn't know whether to scream out in fury, or whoop in excitement. She let the waves of emotions tumble over her.
Slowly, the girl let herself fall back, so she was looking up at the ceiling of her Common Room. There wasn't much light, besides the fire, and the dim lamps lit on the walls, but enough light to read over the letter yet again. After reading ti through for the third time, a smile finally spread onto Matty's youthful face. She had another brother. Well, there was no point getting upset about the fact that they had kept it from her... was there? Obviously there must have been a good reason behind it, and now that Jamie was telling her, he must have been convinced Oliver would like her, and vice versa, as a family member. The girl took another glace at the photo, and a small laugh tumbled out of her mouth. The girl let her head drop on the ground, stretching her legs out. Surprises never ceased to amaze her.
