"If you're good today," Ryder replied, looking pointedly at the boy who had addressed him, "you will get to fly. If I hear any flack or see you messing around, however, you will get to watch your classmates show you how a broom works."
"That goes for the rest of you as well," the man turned upon the rest of the class, giving them all a look that told them he was not one to mess with. Oh, no. Cross Hailey and one might find him/herself in detention for the rest of the year. And he wouldn't make it enjoyable.
"Now, you all have a broom next to you?" he now glanced around, making sure everyone of the kids was standing next to a broom. "Good. First, reach your hand out over your broom and say 'UP!' Don't be hesitant or nervous. These particular brooms need a little forcefulness or they won't do anything. I'd have better ones for you, but unfortunately we had a little break-in a few nights ago."
Ryder could not hide his disappointment when saying this last bit. He had spent the better part of last year working out some deals for those brooms and while he had still wound up with junk ones, like those sitting beside the students now, no one knew he had procured a few top of the line '05s along with them. They were all gone now, though, after someone had let themselves into the broom closet, leaving behind a broken lock. If Ryder ever found out who....ooo, they would pay.

Sarsha just nodded to Kyle. She was worried about this whole flying buiseness. She knew he was trying to reassure her but she was still worried. Even it being a beginners class it was scary. She couldn't imagine flying on anything but an aeroplane.
Sarsha listened to the man who was standing at the front of the group. She could tell he was the type of professor you wouldn't wanna cross paths with and yet, at his statement that if they weren't good they wouldn't be flying so contemplated doig something bad like Artemis was so that she wouldn't have to fly. But she then realised that wouldn't be good and the man would probably punish her harshly, and quickly changed her mind.
She stood nervously beside a broom and raised her hand above it. Would it really come up? She wasn't sure about this whole thing. She looked around at the others, wondering if they were gunna do it too. She then nervously and very quietly said "Up", the broom didn't move.

Artemis's face put on a mocking type look as the man adressed him. He promptly said "UP!" in a very strict and forcefull tone and his broom snapped up to his hand and the sound of the wood on his hand was a small crack. Artemis smiled smugly at everyone else and looked a sarsha and saw her broom do nothing. How amusing I love this, I can do this and she couldn't i'll bet I'm the first to get the broom up on the first try. he thought to himself

Nathan stepped over to the right side of the broom (for he was left handed) and listened to the very very very tall man. He was over a foot and about three inches higher then the tallest students - Nathan being one of the tallest (and proud). With him awing over height for it was an ambition of his to be taller then his brother, he completely missed the instructions. Oh joy. Seeing as one of the students had hand on broom, he gave a skeptical look before hearing some Huffle not too far away mutter, 'up' and nothing happened. Deciding to give it a try, Nathan said, "Up." Sporting confidence, and the broom went up into his left hand. At least it had worked for him...

After getting a broom with Michelle and Brina, Flora stood next to her own and put her hand over it. "I hope this works..." she thought. "UP!" she comanded and to her own surprise the broom shoot up into her hand. Even though it was tightly in her grip, Flora continued to dumbfoundedly, stare at the broom. Maybe some of her family's flight skills didn't skip her like she thought. Finally looking elsewhere, Flora wanted to see how Michelle was doing.

Kyle had flown before. Not a lot of times, but he had. So he's not particularly nervous. That's why he knew it's more about the broom than the flier when the broom didn't respond. From the looks of it, these brooms could be nearly as old as he was.
"Sarsha, louder," he hissed to her without moving his lips too much. He too extended his hand above his broom and said a half-hearted "Up". He would wait til Sarsha got her broom up first. He's a guy, he didn't mind being the last one getting that done, especially he knew perfectly when he could do and had no need to show off.

Michelle gave the teacher a nervous glance before turning to Flora whispering low enough for only her to hear, "Those people who stole the brooms, you think he means us from the other night?"
She leaned back, a completely calm expression painted on her face. Then she turned to her broom as if what she had said wasn't important and put her hand above her handle.
"Up!" She grunted loudly.
She watched as the broom slowly lifted off the ground and floated beside her, but never made it to her hand. "C'mon you stubborn ol' git! The rest of the way up!"
Finally her broom slowly reached her hands and she turned first to Flora then to Sabrina. "We gotta meet after class, I got somethin' I wanna talk to you about."
She then signaled for Brina to pass the message over to Asap. She wanted to talk to him about this too. They may be in serious trouble for taking the brooms.

Sarsha looked around as three others had already gotten their brooms up. Was she really that bad at it. She looked to Kyle with a worried look as he whispered to her to say it louder. She watched him say up and his broom not move as well. It made her feel a little better that she wasn't the only one having trouble, she didn't realise of course, that Kyle was doing it deliberately. She looked to her broom once more and raised her arm above it again. "Up" she said louder this time hoping that the broom would move upwards. This time it wriggeled on the ground a little but didn't get up to her hand.
She shot another worried look to Kyle but decided to try once more. "Up" she said her voice having a tiny bit more of a commanding note to it this time. The broom flew upwards into her hand. She grinned and looked over to Kyle. "Look" she squeaked surprised. "I got it!"

"Told you," he gave her a two thumbs up. Confidence was the key. "You know, maybe you should try to play Quidditch for your team. I heard they sometimes let first years play too."
Now that she got hers, he had to work on his. "Up," he said firmly to the broom. It did a weak twitch on the ground.
Sighing to himself, thinking the broom was trying to pay back for his first lame attempt, he did it again. But this time, the broom did a mini spin, which caused the boy to do a little awkward jumping to prevent himself from tripping.
"On the other hand, I definitely am not going to go for tryouts," he blew air from his teeth. He tried for the fourth time, and the broom raised weakly to his hand.

Sarsha smiled as Kyle encouraged her and watched as he tried to get his broom into his hands. He was aving from what it seemed as much if not more trouble than she had. But luckily his broom to raised into his hands. Sarsha smiled to him. "Well done!" she said kinda excitedly. Until she realised that having the broom in her hand meant she now had to ride it. The look of worry spread accross her face once more.
"I don't wanna play for my house team" she said to Kyle in response to his earlier comment "You said loads of people get injured, I don't think I want to be involved in such a brutal game" she definately wasn't to keen on getting injured while in mid air on a stick with some straw at the end. It just didn't seem... safe.
Sarsha gave Kyle a weak smile "Maybe we should both just come watch the games together" she said to him thinking that sounded like a much safer option than actually playing.

"True, there is a brutal game here and there, but that doesn't mean they are all like that," Kyle tried to do some damage control regarding Quidditch. "You may not be very good, but I seriously everyone should play the game at least once, you know, just so you know what it's like?"
He turned his broom upside down and looked at the twigs at the end. Honestly, they looked worse than his worst hair day. "I don't really think I will get to play this year anyways," he continued with a shrug. "So yes, we definitely should go watch every single game. I bet you will fall in love with Quidditch by the end of the first match."

Flora wispered back to Michelle in a low tone. "I don't know...I hope he doesn't. My sister still hasn't found out that I took her's'' In the mean time, Flora just stood there watching Michelle try to get her broom to fly to her hand. "Vat do you vant to talk to us about?" she asked went Michelle meantioned it. She just hoped that it wasn't about anything bad.

"Now what do we do?" Artemis asked his broom in hand and a smile on his face. I love this place more and more each moment.he thought as he loked around the stadium his face seemd pleasant and relaxed. Artemis looked at the others he hated how the kept chattering when they should be trying to learn.

Hailey watched the kids with great interest. Some seemed to have gotten brooms that liked them. Very few, not even the best fliers in the world, were able to get these old things up on the first try. They tended to get confused with so many people riding them.
"Alright, now that you've got that down," the man spoke in a loud clear voice as the last student finally got their broom up. "I want you to swing one leg over and straddle it. One the count of three, you'll all lift your legs off the ground and hoover for a moment. Do nothing else until I say or you will find yourselves in trouble."

Flora looked away from Michelle to see what Hailey had to tell the first years. Now finally came the time that they would actually go into the air, which kind of scared Flora a bit. The fear of falling off still lomed about her, she still had the scrape on her knee from a few nights ago. Putting her leg over her broom, Flora gently pushed off the ground and in a way hovered. Actually, she was having some trouble staying on and continued to wobble.
