Once again, it seemed as if the turn of the year brought misfortune. Last January those awful Deva people had invaded and it was this time around that most of the school had come down with Pox. Becca had never had the disease, and had avoided it this time around as well. There were links to certain other animal diseases and she wondered if it was one of those that had built up her immunity. Either that or it was the fact that she tended to avoid large groups and preferred to socialize with her creatures instead.
She also didn't mind being in her classes that much either, finding that even when her lectures got off topic and random, the students were generally well mannered and inquisitive. It was especially so with her NEWT students.
She had, as usual, set up the tea service, needing the refreshment break about this time anyway and confident that at least a couple of her students did as well. As usual, this class would be student directed. If the young men had a topic they needed to discuss, the class would do so. Otherwise, she had one for them. Her feet propped on her desk and her nose in a book, she waited for the sixth and seventh years to arrive.

Although Connor was fortunate to not have dragon pox, it appeared that he did have a cold. He was running a fever and felt cold all the time, but it didn't stop him from attending his lessons. He was determined to make it to all of his classes, the first go around he had left Griffiths, and the second time around he hadn't shown up to charms at all. He was so determined to show up to all of his classes that he even arrived a bit early for his Arithmancy lesson. He smiled at the professor despite his pulsing head ache, and seated himself towards the front of the room as he had the last class. He had learned that it was best to sit up close to partake in class discussions. And not only that, but Professor Davenport was always kind enough to have tea set up so the students could help themselves.
He set his books down on the table and got himself some tea, talking as he did so. " Hullo Professor Davenport. Any specific topic for today? " He asked as he sat back down in his seat. He removed his cloak and set it down on the back of his chair, finding himself feeling hot now, and drank from his tea.

Sophia proudly walked into the room, so glad that she wasn't running late as usual. She spied a seat in the front and graciously took it. She rolled her bags off of her shoulders and onto the nearby table. She looked around the room, feeling an aura of sereneness and pure relaxation. She saw a charming boy drinking tea near to her and she smiled. There's tea here? I'm in love with this class already! She grabbed a bit of tea in the front and was careful not to drop the pot or the cup. She was awfully danger-prone, and being tea-stained was an awful way to start class. She slowly sat back in her seat next to the boy and took a sip. It was warm, not to hot or cold, and she felt the warmth creep down her body. She took off her teal trench-coat and followed the boy's suit, placing it on the back of her chair. She then decided that now's as good a time as any to make a friend. She tapped the boy on the shoulder.
"Hello there. I'm Sophia Crawford. I don't believe we've met." She said politely.

Drew ducked into the class, knowing that realistically he still was shorter than the door frame, but lately feeling like he was cutting it close. He hadn't done a lot of growing over the last year, but over the past week or so, his joints had gotten achey and he wasn't sleeping so hot. The later might have been the time of year and the state of the magical world at the moment, but it was the aches and the fact that his shoes were getting tight that told him something big was coming... no pun intended.
He slumped into a seat at the table, dropping his things on the floor next to him. In a while, he would pull out his notes and things, but at the moment his stomach took president. He grabbed a cucumber sandwich and shoved it in his mouth before grabbing a teacup and taking some time to notice who else was in the room. Davenport had her nose in a book as she usually did and would most likely be oblivious until the bell rang. Connor had already made it in and Drew nodded a hello to the Slytherin. The girl, he didn't know and he smiled at her before realizing his sandwich was still in his mouth.
"Are you new? I'm Drew Thornton. Nice to meet you," he greeted before sticking the sandwich back in his mouth and taking a bite. She was obviously talking to Connor and he didn't want to interupt.

Sophia whirled around as she heard another voice and realized that another boy had entered. She giggled a little before replying.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Sophia Crawford. Nice choice of sandwich."
She realized that it wasn't that funny, not the usual wit she spit out, but it was small talk nonetheless. She sighed and reached for two of the sandwiches, hoping that she didn't seem greedy. She was a girl who wasn't afraid to eat, anything or anytime, although she never seemed to gain weight from her indulging appetite. She took a bite and was instantly hooked, grateful that she had grabbed two.

Drew smirked back through his mouthful, taking care to keep his lips shut so as not to subject Sophia with a smile full of cream cheese. Once he swallowed, he grinned wide, appreciating a girl who wasn't afraid to eat. Too many of them were afraid to actually enjoy a good meal for fear of breaking out or getting fat.
Well, Alexander did that too, but... it was Alexander.
"The scones are pretty decent too," he commented, grabbing a cranberry one as well as the butter. "Much needed this time of the afternoon." He lowered his voice to a whisper even though he was pretty sure Davenport was engrossed in her book. "Helps get through the class..."

Sophia tilted her head, a little confused. She quickly ate the remainder of her sandwich, sitting down. "D'you mean that this class is a little...umm...slow-going?" She asked in a hushed voice. She didn't want to offend the professor but saw that she was quite taken with the book she had burrowed herself into, almost isolated completely. She thought about all that the class entailed...charts and figures, something that Sophia hadn't warmed up to. Actually, it was something Sophia never could warm up to.
"I'm not too great at numbers. I hope I don't fail horribly. Does she give out a lot of work, Professor Davenport?"

It had been a rough day so far for Dante, and it showed in his gate. Hunched over under the weight of his backpack he entered the room rather slowly. It wasn't that he was sick, he was much better now that the Dragon Pox had been treated. He was just exhausted. All the free time he was so use to over the break was gone. Instead classes filled his day, and it was frustrating when he knew all that time had gone by. Perhaps he had spent to much time sleeping over break. There were so many things he could have done instead of sleep. But then again, he was so tired that maybe he should have slept more.
At any rate, it was time for Arithmancy, but even his favorite class for the day could not get him excited. He skipped the tea, and saying hello to anyone in the class. He tried to make eye contact with everyone that was already there, which proved to be a challenge.
Making his way to an open chair close enough that he hoped Davenport would not call him any closer to the group he stopped and pulled it out. Then setting his backpack on the table in front of him and sat down. As soon as he took the seat though he brought his head to the backpack, turning it into a pillow. He was just so tired and bored, and even doubted that this lesson would get his attention. Perhaps today, rather than daydream, he would actually get to sleep. Unlikely as it was, he shut his eyes and hoped he would drift off.

She stopped suddenly at the arrival of another student. She wanted to say hello, but his green eyes connected with hers for a brief moment, leaving her utterly confused. They were eyes that were somehow lukewarm to her, cold on the outside yet warm within. She watched him as he fell asleep on his backpack on a nearby table. She wondered who the boy was and why he was so tired. If the other students came in with such a vivre for the class, surely it would be an interesting one indeed.

"It's not too bad," Drew answered, nodding a hello in Dante's direction as the other Ravenclaw entered the room. As long as the guy didn't start calling him 'Drewbie' again, they'd be cool.
Drew turned his attention back to the bruntette. "She gives a normal amount of work, I suppose," he continued. "It's not easy, but she usually goes at a decent pace that it's not too hard to keep up. And if you ever want to stall for any reason..." Drew lowered his voice even more, "... Just ask her about some animal and she'll go off until the bell rings."

Sophia laughed. "Really?" She pictured the teacher gesturing widely about a hippogriff, then using the arithmancy charts for reference. "I would love to see that! Oh, and I'm glad that she doesn't go too fast." A panic-stricken look flickered onto her face. "I mean, not that I'm completely stupid, but I'm hopeless at Arithmancy." Sophia was happy then to realize that she knew multiple names of creatures, and made a mental note to look up more in the library, just in case. "I just hope that I don't mess this class up too bad, y'know? The NEWTs and all. If I do horrible on it, my parents would flip."

"Psshh... you can't suck too badly if you made the OWL to get in here," Drew answered, knowing that Davenport had pretty high expectation to get into her NEWT lessons. A lot of professors only asked for an A just to fill the class. Then again, he knew of more than one person who had gotten special permission to sit in on the NEWT when they hadn't gotten a high enough OWL.
"But if you need any help, just ask," he offered with a crooked smile. "I'm pretty good at this stuff and what I don't get, I have my older sister's notes. She totally aced this class, so I know her stuff is accurate."

"Aww, thanks." His compliment made her cheeks glow a bit. His friendliness was very much appreciated. Drew seemed like one of the nicer guys around Hogwarts and in these dark times, it was good to have a friend. She wondered if he too worried about invasions by the Deva, about the danger that could be in the school even as they spoke. She shook the idea from her head because that was a conversation a bit too heavy for the time being.
"You have a sister? That's cool." Sophia wished she had a sibling, although everyone else told her that it was a horrible thing to even think about. "What House was she in?"

His smile widened, but didn't straighten up any. "Yeah, it's cool most of the time I guess," he kidded, actually thinking quite highly of Allegra. He didn't admit it often and hardly ever to her face, but she was one of the few people he knew would always be there for him. She was, without a doubt, the best sister a guy could have.
"... Especially when she's let me steal her notes for the last seven years. She was a Ravenclaw too, but heck. That doesn't mean anything. They let me in there after all."

"Of course they'd let you in! Why wouldn't they?" Sophia said good-naturedly. "Seven years of notes? That's gotta make classes a heck of a lot smoother." She smoothed out her skirt, the uniform which she secretly loathed but tried to tolerate. She looked around, noticing that only three students were in the classroom, two of whom were actually conscious. She sighed, wondering when this class would start.
