The room was empty, but the door's unlocked. The professor was nowhere in sight, but there were loads of scrolls, very dusty dirty looking scrolls of parchment, on his desk. Students were welcomed to com into the room, although the professor left no instructions as to what's going to happen in today's class.

Arianna peered into the room before stepping inside. There was no one in sight. Not that she wasn't surprised. She was probably the only one left taking Runes. It was good in some ways; a little one-on-one never hurt. But it also meant that there was no one to talk to before class started. Awkward moments also increased when you were the only one around to answer any questions from the professor. Ah, well, there wasn't much she could do about it.
Resigning herself to what could be a dull class, Arianna sat down in a seat at the front of the room. There was no point hiding in the back. She'd have to move to the front when the teacher decided to start lessons.

"My apologies," the professor rushed into the room, an owl flying close behind him. While he obviously knew there's someone in the room and thus the apology, but he seemed to be talking to himself. More like he didn't realize he hadn't spoken out loud.
"A new transcript of the latest discovery," he took the thick envelop from the owl's beak, after it found a still unoccupied spot on the desk. "Very exciting, loads of expressions and new findings..."

Arianna raised an eyebrow at the professor. She didn't know, nor really care, what the professor was talking about. It was all just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo to her and if he didn't say anything more to catch her interest, the girl would dig for her pens and parchment and start to draw. Oh, wait, she was already doing that. As was usual when she had time, Arianna had already pulled out her parchment and a charcoal pencil. A few swift strokes and she was on her way to drawing a nice portrait of Goober, Juni, and Snip.

He couldn't help but unrolled a couple of those scrolls and looked at the signs and symbols on them. Fascinating, very fascinating. He could make out meanings, but some of the symbols were a bit blurry, while some just didn't make sense. He was so absorbed in them until the owl suddenly flapped its wings. Oh yes, he had a class to teach.
"My apologies Miss," he felt down right embarrassed and quickly put the scrolls down. How could he have forgotten about his class? He blushed slightly and continued to babble. "We, erm, are going to look at a couple of simple expressions today. It's nothing too serious, just something fun to do. Like they can't even be explained separately, because then they really don't make much sense. But it's interesting."

"More interesting than those scrolls?" Arianna questioned, setting her pencil down for the moment. She raised her eyebrow at the man and motioned to the pile he had brought in. Though she still wasn't all that interested in them, they certainly sounded better than the 'expressions' he was talking about. But maybe that was because what Mason had just said made absolutely no sense to her.

Professor Mason blinked, not sure what the girl was talking about at first. The truth was his mind was going in five different directions at the same time and even he himself couldn't understand what he was talking about. But the look of confusion was quickly turned into a smile. "Depends," he said and went to the board. Picking up a piece of chalk, he sketched three symbols on the board. He then turned around and looked at the girl, the smile still on his face. "But a lot of my female students find this interesting. It stands for Princess, daughter of kings."

Arianna raised an eyebrow. Why in the world would anyone find it interesting that a bird symbolized a princess? Well, okay, she was interested to know why, but not in a way that said 'oh wow! I should paint little birdies in front of my name! Then I can be a princess, too!' At least, that's how she was imagining these girls would react.
"So...why is it a bird?" she asked, voicing the one question that had come to mind. "Why not....a cat or something?"

"Hieroglyphics were used phonetically, which means each of the symbols stood for a sound," he explained. "So, instead of associating the vulture to females, it only represents the a sound." "In fact, the same symbol appears in the expression, Son of Ra," he went back to his drawing. "You know about Ra?"
