(yes, open.)
There loomed a somewhat lowered volume at the Gryffindor dinner table. People talked, yes, but it wasn't as loud as usual. The rise and falls of teenage voices continued, yet one teenage voice wasn't there.
Beni munched steadily, but she had a determined kind of chewing. She looked at none of her usual mates, just sort of out there. 'Out there' probably meant at someone, but who knew? With all of her eye rolling, she could have gone cross-eyed.
When a know-it-all seventh year boy came flying in for her dinner roll, she immediately let out a roar of anger, and slapped his hand away before he got what he wanted. No, no... this wasn't for the weak.

Deryn had been just entering the Great Hall when she heard a roar coming from her table. Pun intended or not, Deryn continued walking towards the Lion table. She saw who it was that had made the roar, and sat down across from her. "You ok, mate?" she asked, piling up her plate with the food that had appeared. Deryn realized it was a dumb question, as it was clear that she wasn't ok. Correcting herself, Deryn spoke again. "Lemme rephrase," she said, "What's wrong?" That seemed like a better question.

"People, that's what!" Beni verbally rampaged, sticking her fork up like it was a pitchfork. "Try as you might, it never gets you nowhere--" What a surprise, she didn't even notice her own double negative. "-- I guess scheming gets you to places." As she looked at the girl straight in the eye and preached, the seventh year boy snuck his hand on her plate and took her dinner roll. She hadn't noticed until he was well down the aisle. "Oi! Bloody Merl-- I hope it's stale!!"

Wow. Deryn didn't even know what to say. She watched as the boy took the girl's dinner roll and heard her yell at him. "Oi! Bloody Merl-- I hope it's stale!!" she had hollered. Deryn grabbed another dinner roll and put it on her plate for her. Eating her own, Deryn continued to question her. "What happened?" she asked, concerned not only for the girl's well being, but her own. The fork in her hand looked awfully dangerous.

Beni was flattered by the gesture and thanked Deryn. "Nothing, except the bloke that's supposed to be the love of my life has been stolen by a pompous blondie," she blurted out to the girl. She was usually having to be consoled by Rael for her girl troubles, but she believed the girl deserved a day off once in a while. "Not that nothing's wrong with blondies, because I'm naturally blonde," She touched her perfectly swept short cut. "But I suppose that's not the point."

Deryn choked on the dinner roll as Beni said this. A pompous blondie?! That could only be one person. Sonja. "Umm, may I ask what house this 'pompous blondie' belongs to? Because if it's who I think it is, we are in the same boat, as far as hating her goes," Deryn choked out, trying to swallow the bun before it killed her. That was bloody quick work. How long has she been here?! Deryn thought, sulking. But then her memory retreated back to the fifth floor and what had happened there and it made her smile.

"Bloody Slytherin. Sonja's the name," Beni thought dejectedly. But she did seemed rather pleased that someone else hated her. It made her feel quite happy in that instant. But then the image of the camp-out came back again. "I guess I'm not the only one she rubs wrong?"

Deryn's heart sank. It WAS Sonja. So, not only was she a horrible person, she was a man-stealer too. "Ooooooo I HATE her!" Deryn said, rather loudly, "AND she's about to be my bloody step-sister!" The smile on Deryn's face had disappeared in a matter of seconds at the mention of Sonja's name. Deryn needed to hear more. She should write to Sonja's mother and tell her what she was doing. Although it hadn't been her that did it, she was still part of the "Silencing incident". "I could KILL her! What did she do this time?" Deryn spat, stabbing at her food angrily.

"Merlin have mercy on you, child," Beni said sadly and gravely to Deryn. It was bad enough she had a few classes with her and corridor passings-- but to be legally related to her? Beni would've had to commit murder as well.
She had to be careful how she said the next things, though. Saying too much would make her a victim, saying too little would make her a petty enemy, but anything would probably be sent to the Deej. "She snogged a guy who I was getting close to-- right in front of me." Alright, hopeless victim it is.

It was a shame that Deryn had been taking a sip of water while Beni was talking, as it came shooting back out all over the table when she spoke. Choking again slightly, Deryn slammed her cup back down. "She did WHAT!?!" she yelled. A few people behind her turned and looked when she yelled, but she didn't care. Rage was taking over common sense at the moment.

Beni couldn't help but wipe a drop or two that landed on her chin. Still, she was satisfied at the girl's reaction nonetheless. "Yeah," Beni said with an attempt at a smile, only making her seem sorrowful without intending to. "And... and.... he kissed her back. I know it." She did. She had seen (and done) it before.

Deryn was furious. She couldn't remember the last time she had been this mad. Deryn looked at Beni, and realize the water had hit her. That was kind of gross. Beni also looked as if she wanted want a scene, which Deryn was making, so she apologized for that too. "I'm so sorry," Deryn said quietly, "About they guy and for yelling just now. And the water, but I seem to have a bit of trouble keeping my voice down when I'm this angry." She stabbed angrily at a poor potato that was sitting on her plate. She didn't feel like eating now, she just wanted to hurt Sonja.

"No it's okay," Beni said with a vigorous shake of the head. She could understand Deryn's anger, because it was just as her own. She chewed on the donated dinner roll with malice. Yeah, it was as if she spread malice on her roll. "I hate that girl. She ruined all hope."

"Aw, Beni. You shouldn't give up on the boy though," Deryn said soothingly, "Odds are Sonja's bound to get bored of him and go after some other unfortunate soul." Deryn meant this sincerely. With Sonja's looks, she could probably snake ((pun not intended)) any boy in the entire school.
Deryn watched Beni as she chewed on the dinner roll rather savagely. Smiling weakly, Deryn chuckled to herself. "We should start a group called S.H," Deryn suggested, "Sonja Haters. I'm sure we'd have quite a few followers." It did seem like a good idea. At the time..

"That's true," Beni agreed, not only on her tendency to transcend, but also on her looks. But she had dealt with girls like her. Just not as horrible as her. She was breaking unprecedented ground. "I'll be VP if you become the prez," Beni added, already wanting to write up a big banner and clear out the great hall to accomodate the members.
