Allegra tried to offer Chad a small smile, but it didn't feel very genuine, which only made her feel worse about the situation. It was pretty clear, just from the quidditch ref's voice, that she had been mistaken: they probably couldn't all get along. Chad already had a problem with the situation.
She wasn't exactly sure how to feel about it all. She felt awful for obviously hurting him, but at the same time was a little mad. Did he really have a right to act so jealous? Again, she wasn't sure.
"You don't have to," she said softly, but also understood that he probably wouldn't want to stay when he felt so awkward. She just didn't know what else to say to him.

"No," Chad told her, rather sternly, "I have to." He looked at her, seeing the apologetic look and feeling a little bad about being so mean about the whole thing. He sent her the same look back before he just turned and walked from them. His hands shoved back into his pockets as he shook his head and scoffed. Why was he so angry? He and Allegra hadn't even been going out that long but he was just...jealous? Chad hadn't ever been jealous before, so this whole thing was new to him. And he didn't like it at all.

Kellen hadn't wanted to get into the middle of anything--not consciously anyway. But his mere presence was doing that, and he knew it. Still, he could sense the awkward as Chad walked away. "It was nice meeting you, Chad," he managed to get out before the other young man left.
He turned fully to Allegra. "Hey, sorry about that," he motioned half-heartedly toward Chad. "I didn't mean to, I mean...I wasn't trying to cause problems or get in the middle of anything." A voice in the back of his head reminded him that that wasn't entirely true--if she was there with someone, as she clearly was, he did want to interrupt it, even if just a little.

"I'm sorry, Kellen," Allegra said with a heavy sigh, smiling as she realized he was apologizing at the same time. Of course, he had nothing to be sorry for. She, on the other hand, felt there were so many things she was responsible for: Chad's abrupt behavior, forcing a situation she figured might be awkward, neglecting to tell Kellen she had sort of been seeing someone else. The thing was, she had kind of assumed he had been dating girls in Prague. She didnt' want to know about them, so why should she mention Chad? Now that she thought about it, it hadn't been very fair to either young man. Yet another thing to apologize for.
"You didn't cause any problems," she tried to assure him, attempting another smile. "But I think I sure did..."

Apologies passed and Chad now out of earshot, Kellen deemed it safe now to ask what, exactly, was the relationship between Chad and Allegra. "So how long've you two, you know...known each other?" he asked, going a bit of a safer route than he'd originally intended. She was free to date whoever she wanted, of course, but that didn't mean he would be without a twinge -- or, okay, more than a twinge -- of jealousy when she did. It was his own fault, of course, for not keeping in such good contact and not being able to keep a long-distance thing going, so he kept cordial about it all.

"We met over Christmas vacation," Allegra answered with a small, almost apologetic shrug. She was feeling a little bit like she was under the spotlight, and of course she knew she deserved it. They had both agreed on taking a break, possibly seeing other people, but it still didn't feel right. Even though she and Chad had never really been serious, it still never really had and even now, months later, she wasn't sure why she had continued. And what could she say at this point? Chad was a nice guy, but to mention that would imply things she wasn't sure she wanted to imply. Chad treated her well and she liked being with him and all, but Kellen... with Kellen was different. a good different. Maybe even a better different. Despite their distance and sparse communication, he had never been far from her mind. Only a few weeks ago, she had mentioned his name in the midst of a girl gabbing session. She had once been told that she fit with Kellen like Peanut butter and Jelly. She liked that comparison. But what if Kellen had found a different flavor in Prague? It was possible and not a thought she cared much for. "I missed you," she said, hoping it sounded sincere, but how could it when there was Chad?

Kellen sighed softly and offered a small smile. He'd been very busy and very focused while away in Prague, and though he'd flirted a bit with one of his co-trainees, he hadn't really dated or had any kind of relationship there. Should he tell her that? In some ways, it might make him seem like he hadn't moved on--which he hadn't really. He'd just been suspended. It was like he lived a different life while he was away, and had wanted to pick up his old one when he got back.
On the other hand, he didn't want to lie and imply that more had gone on than had--that wouldn't be fair and it wouldn't be right. He decided to keep it simple, and echo her last statement genuinely. "I missed you too."

"I'm really sorry, Kellen," she said again, feeling bad about the awkward situation that she knew was all her fault. "If I had known you were going to be here..." Well, she probably would have asked Kellen to be her partner. It would have saved an uncomfortable situation, considering Chad had only come because she asked him. Kellen actually knew the newlyweds.
"I'm glad you're back," she said, not bothering to finish her previous thought. Why did she feel so flustered around him, almost like she had felt back in school. It was a nervous feeling, but not necessarily a bad one.

"Hey, nothing to be sorry about," Kellen reassured her. Even if the two weren't quite sure where they stood with each other, this meeting was certainly far from the disasterous reunion they might've had. And they'd agreed to see other people until he got back--he could hardly fault her for actually doing so. Even if he didn't actually like it much.
"Chad seems like a nice bloke, at any rate," he added, based on what little he'd seen of the young man. Even if he hadn't been comfortable with Allegra's talking to Kellen. Kellen understood the jealousy, he supposed, but couldn't help but feel Chad had overreacted a tad.

"He is," she answered with a tight little smile, really not caring for the way Chad had reacted. She knew it might be uncomfortable, but she really hadn't expected the minor fit he had thrown. Maybe she just hadn't tried hard enough to keep things casual.
As disappointed as she was with herself for blowing it, she really wasn't happy with Chad for acting that way. Kellen hadn't stormed off like that and he probably had more of a reason to.
"So tell me about Prague," she said, not wanting to think about Chad anymore, worried she just get more angry with him. If Kellen wanted to return to the subject, she'd let him, but for now, she wanted to talk about something more enjoyable.

Kellen's face brightened at the mention of his until-recently surrogate home. "Oh, it was brill," he enthused. "I mean, I know I wrote a lot...at the beginning. About how beautiful the city was and all that, but really, the whole experience was just great, for learning and all."
Of course, everything wasn't always great when it came to Healing. There were plenty of battles the Healers won, but there were plenty they lost as well. One of the first things they'd tried to teach was keeping distance from patients and not to get too attached. It wasn't always an easy lesson to learn.
"It's all fascinating, you know? There are so many different ways to treat things and so many different opinions on what's best. And it always varies from person to person, you know?" Kellen sighed. "Hey, but I'll have to show you my pictures sometime. No weird disease ones though, promise--just the architecture and sight seeing stuff."

Allegra gave a small, but not entirely sincere smile when he seemed to get so excited over Prague. She was glad he had a good time, but couldn't help feeling that it would have been a little nicer if he had missed her enough not to be so excited about it all.
Of course, she could hardly complain. She hadn't done much to keep up their corespondence and, to boot, had dated another boy.
Still, it did sound amazing, having the ability to see new places and learn new things. There were differences between living stateside and in Great Britan, so she could only imagine what the Czech Republic was like. And really, how could she be upset when Kellen looked so excited about the whole adventure?
"It sounds amazing," she said, her smile becoming more genuine. And then a wondering hit her. ":... Do you really have pictures of diseases and stuff?" She could usually handle the Muggle variety when it came to such photos, but what if they moved?
Ewwww....

"A couple," Kellen faltered a little. It probably would seem weird to others that he would have pictures like that--but what better way to remember and keep track of symptoms he might come across later? "Only with patient's permission, of course. It's all for medical purposes," he tried to explain. "Like, a visual way to reference symptoms and procedures, that kind of thing."
He'd had some quite memorable pictures from the scrofungulus outbreak they'd worked on, but he definitely wouldn't want to startle anybody with those pictures. Scrofungulus was never pretty.

Allegra saw nothing wrong with Kellen having disease pictures. He was a healer after all and isn't that how they kept track of things? She thought it was kind of cute how he made a quick explaination, as if there was something strange about having such a reference, and she bit back a giggle.
What she thought might be considered strange was the next comment that popped into her head. "I wouldn't mind seeing those either," she told him, wrinkling her nose as if she found her own request a little distasteful. Maybe it was, but she also thought it might be interesting. All she got to look at all day was paperwork.

Kellen raised an eyebrow at the request, but then shrugged. "Sure, if you really want to," he offered. "I should warn you, though...some of them aren't exactly pretty. Most are harmless enough, though. You know, skin turning purple, red splotches, maybe something extra growing out of the chest. Not much different than we've seen in the Hospital Wing all these years, you know? Just...more of it."
If it were totally up to him, he'd be spending the rest of his studies working exclusively with magical diseases like he'd been doing in Prague, but St. Mungo's insisted on well-rounded healers, so he'd be starting new rotations soon. He understood the argument, but still would have preferred it to go differently.
"The worst diseases are the ones I didn't get pictures of, though, because there aren't any big physical signs or changes," he said, sighing. "It's always loads easier to treat when there are easy diagnoses to make."
