Why is it that one can no longer be proud of her heritage? We live in an era of so much "political correctness" that, as a Pureblooded woman, I cannot have any pride in my own background without being accused of "purity prejudice". Can I not be proud of my own heritage and still be accepting of others? Why is there such a strong belief that one precludes the other?
And beyond that, why shouldn't I be proud? If it were not for the magical generations that came before us, we would have no society to live in, no world of our own. Hogwarts would not exist. There would be no Ministry of Magic, no Diagon Alley. Should I not be proud of my ancestors for their part in shaping our society? Should I not remember and respect the thousands of years of magical blood my body holds?
There is a mentality that Purebloods who respect and appreciate their own heritage therefore do not respect the heritages of others, and by extension do not respect those others. This may be true of some people, but it is certainly not true of all of us. I respect and accept that everyone with magical ability has a place in our world, but at the same time, there are some fundamental differences between people brought up in the wizarding world and those from outside it. I do not believe I should be asked to disparage my own heritage simply because not everyone shares it.
I am always willing to accept new members into our society. But I am not willing to sacrifice the memory of nor my respect for those magical generations who came before us in order to do so. I am a Pureblood, and I am not ashamed to say so.
