Accepted: the Ministry wishes you a pleasant day.
[Full Character Name:] Verum Sloan
[Character Gender:] Male
[Character Age:] 87 (Born: July 7th, 1921)
[Position Requesting:] Head of Department of Mysteries
[Country of Citizenship:] England
[Years of Employment at Ministry:] 54 years
[Physical Character Description:]
[Eyes:] Bright Royal Blue
[Hair:] White
[Height:] 5'11"
[Weight:] 189 lbs.
Tall, and thin, with gleaming white hair, beard, and mustache, and with eyes of the brightest blue, Verum Sloan wears robes of the finest embroidered fabrics, under which he wears a suit with a knee length coat and high collar made of the same material as the robes above it.
[Personality Character Description:] Ruthlessly cunning, strategic, and obsessive, Verum Sloan is known for his unbelievably controversial support of legislature regarding education and the rights of the British people. He is known for having little patience for the incompetent or the weak willed, and repays threats, not with diplomacy, but with force, of which he can summon quite a bit.
[History:] Born July 7th, 1921, Verum was the son of Jacob and Alexis Sloan, residents of Salem, Massachusetts. When he was ten years old, his father was brutally killed by a man named Halgoron Thesfield for no apparent reason, indeed, authorities from the American Ministry were not able to coax the reasons out of Thesfield under the influence of Veritaserum, Legilimency, the Imperius Curse, or otherwise. Unable to conclude the reasons behind the terrible event, the official record was that it was the unfortunate result of a disagreement. The news of the murder was spread far and wide in the wizarding community. Although the Sloans were a little known family, the Thesfields were a well known and respected family of Aurors, and businessmen. The entire affair became a scandal of sub-epic proportions, creating a great dislike amongst the Thesfield's many friends and admirers for the Sloans, who were regarded, widely, as meddlers to spite the circumstances of the crime.
When finally Verum was sent to the Salem Magical Institute for his magical education, he was the focus of a terrible, and malicious form of notoriety; he was known simply as the son of a murdered man...a murdered man who, even in death, had besmirched the name of a very old, and powerful family. To spite the generally irrational, and perhaps ignorant hate he attracted while at the school, Verum did not let it interfere with his education; He was called by some 'The Ghost of the Library', and for good reason, when he was not in lessons, he was either in the dormitories, or in the library.
During his years at the school, however, he did prove himself a brilliant, and curious student, and one not shy of helping a classmate in need, to spite how he was treated. He was known for being the cheerful type that always delighted in a good joke, and for not letting anything dampen his good fun. He often took part in practical jokes, most of which were rather dangerous, and used his considerable affinity with magic to invent things that were more likely to be found in a joke shop than anywhere else.
In his seventh year, however, that all changed...
When he returned to school for his seventh, and final year, his friends (of which he had few, even then) noted a change in him. He was no longer cheery and light-hearted, but dulled and reserved. No longer did he delight in humor, but remained determinedly, and inexplicably strait faced, and seemingly incapable of laughter. The quality of his schoolwork dwindled; No longer was he the singular image of the perfect study, but rather a slow, depressed personality with very little interest in studying, or anything else for that matter. When questioned, he rebuffed the questioner; When disturbed, he would ignore the disturbance. Nothing seemed to capture his interest, and his depression effected his friends most, and functioned to repel them from him.
After his education was complete, Verum took a job at the American Ministry of Magic in their Department of Mysteries as an Unspeakable, a position that was regarded by those who knew Verum well as slightly ironic given his newly developed attitude. He spent sixteen years in his post as an unspeakable in the American Ministry with little distinction, performing his duty well, but not outstandingly; This struck those close to him as a further oddity, he had always been an outstanding student, final year at Salem not withstanding. Many who knew him thought he might have downplayed his own effectiveness on purpose, but the true reasons are unknown.
Quite mysteriously, he left his wife, and sons, and moved to Britain in order to pursue his career, which had been transferred to the British Ministry. Quite unlike his supremely unremarkable service at the American Ministry, Verum was seen to have a remarkable change of heart toward his career. Overnight, the quality of his work increased exponentially; Where there was adequate work before, something bordering on the remarkable took hold. In less than seven years employment at the British Ministry, Verum rose to the position of Assistant to the Head of the Department of Mysteries, rising to Head of the Department of Mysteries a little over twelve years later.
During his time at the British Ministry, Verum took on an outward attitude that alarmed those few who still knew him well, or cared about him to the point where they abandoned him altogether. He gained an increasingly pronounced hatred for people he called incompetent, weak willed, or otherwise, in his words, sub-standard. He became ruthless in his pursuits, and rarely offered second chances to those under his leadership, and became increasingly outspoken about his beliefs that defense classes should not be taught.
In 1977, He took up a seat as a member of the Wizengamot; This move was viewed by many as odd, however, his ruthlessness has earned him a corp of supporters.
He continues in his position as Head of the Department of Mysteries, and functions one of the senior-most members of the Wizengamot to this day.
[Pros and Cons:]
Pros:
1. Extraordinarily strong willed, and isn't easily defeated by Legilimency, Veritaserum, or Imperius Curses.
2. Masterful duelist with decades of experience.
3. Privy to many of magic's secrets, his years in the employ of the Department of Mysteries have gifted him with a deep understanding of many lores, and a deep understanding of the most arcane of magic's many subtle aspects.
Cons:
1. Is a notably ruthless man with little or no patience for those less professional than himself.
2. Has not seen, contacted, or heard from his wife and son in decades.
3. Is reserved and sometimes paranoid; A product of his many years in a career where he must keep secrets from the most determined secret seekers.

[Writing/Role Playing Example:]
Verum stared at the archway in the large Death Room in the Department of Mysteries; He found he looked through it more and more these days, staring at the veil that blew so peacefully, listening to the faint whispers that seemed to emanate from just beyond.
He turned on his heel suddenly as though suddenly struck with the realization that he had some previous engagement. He walked through the doors at the top of the tiers, high above the stone dais and it's archway, and entered the round room with it's blue flamed candles. As soon as he shut the door, the room began to rotate; Once again, the now familiar sensation of having blue streaks burned into one's retinas fell upon Verum.
As the room came to a halt, he said, in a commanding voice. "Hall of Prophecies.", and a door opened to the right of him. He entered.
He was now standing in the huge cathedral sized room with shelves upon shelves of tiny spun glass spheres. He walked to his left and turned down row 17, coming to a halt before a small sphere set upon a golden stand, and read the card below it once more, just as he had so many times recently, all of which was more ancient in appearance than any other upon the shelf, or, Verum knew, any other prophecy in the entire hall.
