[ Physical Character Description: ]
Tho is a rather average looking boy but has the promise of being strikingly handsome when he is older. His hair is dark brown and would be a bit wavy if he grew it out but at the moment it medium-short in length. His skin tone is rather pale and his complexion clear, as is common with most children his age. He has very dark brown eyes with a very innocent look about them, doe eyes. His cheekbones are sharp arrowheads underneath his skin, though they are not too prominent yet still hidden under the last bit of baby-fat and has a slightly cleft chin. He stands 5 feet 2 inches tall and is of rather slender build.
Outside of his school robes his outfit varies very little. Some of his clothes are a constant, black and white converse, the left one wearing away at the heel, no socks, faded blue Levi jeans fraying at the bottom of both legs, a brown leather belt. His shirts vary slightly, given he has four of them. He has a brown t-shirt as well as a dark green one, both are faded and the brown one has a small hole in the bottom, he has a white tank top, and a black long-sleeved undershirt that is the newest thing he owns and can almost always been seen wearing. No matter what he is wearing he will always have a necklace, two in fact. On a black cord hangs a metal disk with foreign symbols etched into one side and a brown cord on which hangs small leather pouch in which he carries several small objects.
Another thing Tho is never found without, unless directly requested to remove them or asleep, is a pair of dark sunglasses. Sometimes he is also found wearing latex gloves, this is not an all the time thing but is very common for him when he is an unknown situation or area. On occasion he might also be found wearing a paper mask; this is, like the gloves, usually done when he is in a new situation.
[Personality Character Description: ]
Tho is a strange boy; very bight, caring, and a little paranoid. He enjoys attention but is far from being a class clown or any other stereotypical attention getting character because he associates getting attention with getting in trouble. He craves adult approval, which has earned him the name of suck-up or teachers pet in previous years of school. He absorbs knowledge like a sponge does water, drinking in information from books, teachers, or from just listening to other speak.
He is very sensitive and empathetic. He loves to please, is very thoughtful, and hates to see others sad. He isn’t naturally goofy but tries to be when he thinks it will make others smile. Of course as he is getting older he is realizing that it isn’t exactly a very sought after trait in males so he is trying to be tougher and more “manly”. Tho is naturally silent and unobtrusive, often waiting to be noticed and invited to join in rather than asking to do so.
He does not trust many things to be safe. He will not breath without a mask in an area until he has “tested” the air and is sure it is safe. He eats a very small selection of food, not knowing which food is safe and which is not, and he every time he is getting food from a new source he always “tests” it to make sure it is safe. And so on.
He is very curious by nature and often ends up where he is not supposed to be while investigating something. He tries to avoid conflict and has a calm demeanor. At times Tho can be very detached, and is often very random. He speaks like he is years older than he is and finds it easier to make friends with people older than himself.
Tho is mainly and above all else, a boy. He may be bit odd but he still enjoys sporting events, being outdoors, and having fun with friends. He slips into immaturity sometimes, often when around other boys his age, and laughs at things most adults frown upon. He’s got a good imagination and can be rather daring at times.
[ History: ]
Thom is the son of a prostitute, not even his mother has a guess on who his father might be. After being born he lived with his mother for only three weeks before being left at a hospital. From there he went into the foster system where he was soon adopted by Sam and Lisa Region. Sam and Lisa had no children of there own though they did have a border collie named Diego, had been married for three years, Sam had a respectable job while Nikki had quit her work as a bar tender to be a stay at home mom, and at the ages of 28 and 25 and both in good health they looked to be prime material for parents. And at the time they were.
Thom (then called Thomas or Tom) was raised like any other boy, his parents loved him, his house had a large back yard to play in, and when he was three Sam and Lisa adopted his sister Nikki. With everything a boy could want, and even an annoying little sister to pick on and protect, life seemed to be going great for Thom. When he was five he started kindergarten, which was very fun for him. It only took a few weeks for his teachers to realize he was a special child of great intelligence. He learned everything he was taught much faster than the other students, remembered everything he read (having started reading when he was three), and was soon mastering first grade work.
The next year he skipped first grade and went right into second and after the first semesters he was advanced again into third grade.
After completing the school year his parents withdrew him from school to home school him, feeling that he would be able to advance quicker and learn better if he wasn’t restricted to work based on grade. His math skills were equivalent to that of a fourth graders but his reading a vocabulary soon advanced to eight grade level, he had mixed results in all areas of his study.
A few months after Thom’s seventh birthday Sam died in a car accident. He was driving home from the bar, sped through a red light and into traffic. A month later Lisa started doing drugs. By July Lisa was an addict, they had moved to a studio apartment to save money, and Thom was often left home with Nikki. He had been re enrolled into a new school as a fourth grader even though before Sam’s death he was up to sixth grade work in his worst subjects. When school started again Nikki would also be starting school.
Lisa got odd jobs, enough to keep the apartment and buy drugs and usually keep a good stock of food in the house. Thom took care of himself and Nikki, when Lisa didn't. Sometimes she remembered to make them take a bath and brush their teeth, sometimes she had time to make their meals, but lots of times it was Thom who remembered to bathe and made Nikki do so to, and it was Thom who got the meals ready.
When school started Thom made sure he and Nikki had a lunch to take everyday and got them both up in time to catch the bus. He began to hate school. He had already learned everything his classmates were doing and was able to sleep through classes while still getting A’s. He was bored and settled into a pattern of causing trouble so he would be sent to the principals office or made to sit in the hall. When he went to the principals office he would often be able to hear snatches of teachers talking and he listened carefully to learn what he could and when he sat in the hall he would edge his way to an older classrooms door to listen to their lessons or just get up and go and check on Nikki.
His fifth grade teacher saw past his disruptive behavior and started challenging Thom with work from later lessons then that of older grades. Slowly he started to like school a little more again.
When he was nine Lisa packed up all their stuff one day while they were both at school and left. He and Nikki came home to an empty house and when Lisa did not resurface they were back in the system. They bounced from foster home to foster home for a while, a mildly unpleasant time but an improvement most of the time. After two months they were sent to live wither Sam’s parents. They had not been in steady contact with Lisa after Sam’s death so they did not know when she disappeared and it took a while for it to reach them and for them to become the guardians of Thom and Nikki.
So they moved to Sol and Elizabeth(Elli)’s place. They were both retired but Sol made trinkets and jewelry boxes to sell to tourists as a hobby. He taught Thom how to work with wood, how heat and twist metal, and about nature and how to play soccer and other things a boy should know. He loved having the presence of a strong male role model again. Elli always made fresh cookies for bed-time snacks and taught Thom how to sew and take care of an injury. Thom was very happy here and was enrolled in a special school that catered to his learning styles and abilities. Nikki was happy to, which only made Thom happier.
At the age of ten Thom ran away. He didn’t really mean to but one night he sleepwalked right out of the house and twelve blocks before waking up. He was hopelessly lost, and when trying to find his way back only wound up even more lost and further from home. He slept that night in the covered slide at a park and the next morning snuck onto a bus. He ended up on the far side of London, and spent the day exploring in a mixture of curiosity and terror. That night he slept on somebody’s porch. The next morning the owner came out to get his paper and found Thom curled up under his swing, well you can imagine his surprise.
He woke Thom up but Thom would not talk to the man, since he was a stranger. He did let the man lead him inside and had a bowl of oatmeal while the man called the police. After having eaten he told the man his name and his phone number and the man the man promptly called Sol. While he was waiting Thom explored the mans living room, he had a grand piano against one wall, polished and shining white like reflective snow. The man opened the cover and showed him how to place his hands on the keys and explained how it worked.
Thom had a really great time fooling around on the piano, that was until the police officer showed up. He had learned a fear of police from when Lisa was doing drugs and upon seeing the squad car pull up promptly ran out the backdoor. He kept running until he was so out of breath he had to stop. Still in his PJ’s and running like mad then sobbing as he wandered around looking for a place to find, it only took about an twenty minutes for the police to locate him. He had ran into the first place that looked safe to him, a library. He had never been to this library before but he had always loved visiting the one at his school so, forgetting he was lost and running from the cops, he went inside. He wandered around until he ended up in a large armchair with a book in his lap. This time when the cops showed up they waited for Sol before approaching.
Sol was shaking with relief when he showed up and found Thom who started crying with relief at being found. When asked why he had ran away he answered that he had not run away, that he had gone to sleep in his bed and woken up outside. His explanation on how this happened? Aliens. Extra terrestrial being must have taken him from his bed and dropped him off somewhere else. Being imaginative he quickly invented that they were his real parents and had left him here as a child and had abducted him to tell him that he was old enough for to being his mission and that he had to start gathering information on the earth. And having invented the situation it became almost true to him, he dreamed of it several times as well since he dreams about what he thinks about, and after each dream he added new details to the story.
Naturally he was sent to a psychiatrist, Elli fearing that getting lost had been such a trauma to him it caused him to go a little crazy even though Thom said it hadn't been traumatic or anything. The therapist just concluded his telling this alien story was a coping method and that he was a very intelligent and imaginative boy and that it was just a phase and would soon pass.
But it didn’t pass, he began to grow more and more certain of it. He started to prefer being called Tho instead of Thom. He started keeping journals of everything he learned or could ever recall learning, but he did not write them down in English but a new written language he had made up. He started wearing sun-glasses because the light here on earth was a lot brighter than that on his home planet, and he started "testing” everything to make sure it was martin safe.
Shorlty before he turned eleven he got his letter to Hogwarts this was surprising of course but to him it only confirmed that he was indeed a martin.
[ Pros and Cons: ]
Thom is a bit of a dreamer. His head is often in the clouds and at times he can forget completely where he is or what he is supposed to be doing, this often happens in class. His vivid imagination leads him on adventures around the globe while he is sitting at his desk, but it also leaves him sitting there with a stupid blank expression on his face, clear that he doesn’t hear a word you say.
He loves music and plays several different instruments including a drum and is learning piano. He is often found to be tapping out rhythms onto the table or on his leg. Some may find his constant tapping and frequent humming to be very annoying, but he doesn’t even really notice he’s doing it.
He is fiercely protective of his little sister Nikki but also very protective of anybody he likes. He tries to take care of everything and fill the roles of a man, this can result in him being a good person to have on your side in a fight because he is very loyal and will never betray you but it can also, and more likely, mean that he gets in the way a lot and gets on a lot of peoples nerves because they think he is trying to act all big and tough.
He is very intelligent and a very quick learner. Then again he lacks a bit of common sense as well. He has a photographic memory but can be a bit slow on the uptake on things and is often the last to react. He’s a great at coming up with what he should have done an hour afterwards but often finds himself stumbling and blank when he would actually need to think on his feet. There is a lot of “I should have said!”’s and “too bad I didn’t”’s with him.
He is very observant, noticing the smallest things. He takes his times to notice the beauty in natures and can often be found outside at sunrise and sunset, or observing flowers or watching a line of bugs. In an almost childlike way he is easily amazed by such natural things and rarely ever gets bored. He picks up on a lot of things subconsciously as well, noticing boy language and surroundings to get a pretty good idea of what’s going on or going to happen before it actually does happen. But he just calls this insight his martin instincts.
He is reckless. He really doesn’t care if he gets hurt, of course he is far from self destructive and certainly does not seek out pain, but he will not avoid doing something he thinks will be interesting or fun just because of the chance he might get injured. Not that he ever really thinks it out, he is more the type to charge blindly in screaming curses and hexing everything that moves if he is suddenly presented with the situation, though in hindsight he often realizes that subtly and finesse would have done much better.
[ Role Playing Example: ]
Tho woke early, before the sun had even risen. Too excited to sleep he had quickly gotten dressed, pulled on a beanie against the early morning chill that would await him outside, slipped on a pair of gloves and a mask. His sunglasses hanging by his collar and causing an odd sort of lump in his shirt.
Before leaving he tiptoed across the hall and opened the door a few inches until he could peer in and see his little sister Nikki asleep. Satisfied she was safe he hurried down to the kitchen and let Woofer, their two year old golden lab, out of his crate and then slipped quietly out the backdoor, dog in tow.
In the pre-dawn light he did not need to wear his glasses because the light here was much like how it was on his home planet. He took Woofer’s leash from beside the door and clipped it to the dogs collar then took him for a jog around the block a few times, releasing some of his pent up energy. Today he and Sol were Diagon Alley to buy his school supplies; an event that would prove or disprove this Hogwarts place. Part of him was itching to leave, praying for it to be real, but just as big a part of him didn’t want to leave Nikki because from so far away he would not be able to protect her.
He went back inside and fed Woofer before lifting the keys to the shed off the hook and going back outside and into Sol’s shop. Surrounded by the smells of sawdust and heated metal he felt at ease. He grabbed a pair of safety goggles from the shelf and replaced them with his sunglasses, pulled his stool over to the workbench and set to work. He may not be able to protect Nikki but he would at least leave her something to keep her connected to him.
