[ Physical Character Description: ]
Vanessa is 5’5” and weighs approximately 120lbs. She has long dark brown hair that is usually left down and hanging loosely over her shoulders and half way down her back. Her eyes are almond shape and are the color of dazzling hazel, changing slightly depending what it is that she wears upon her body. She has long black eyelashes, emphasizing the size of her eyes, and the depth of her soul. Fair skin that burns easily in the sun, Vanessa is one to coat herself in sun bathing lotion before going out and enjoying the outdoors. If Vanessa becomes embarrassed, frustrated and/or angry, it is easily notable by the color of her cheeks turning a bright red.
When not dressed in her school garb, she is wearing jeans and over sized long t-shirt. Her shirts are always of a solid color. She almost always wear a casual pair of black dress boots, but can sometimes be found wearing sneakers. For jewelry, she only wears a watch with a black leather band and it has a silver face on her left wrist.
On formal occasions you would see her wearing a long skirt with flat shoes. She would also be wearing a button up blouse of a solid color. All in all she is easy to look at. She might be a little on the plain, but she’s very attractive in a natural sort of way.
[ Personality Character Description: ]
Shy and yet subtly outgoing, Vanessa is a lover of nature and all those around her. She loves people almost as much as she loves animals, and in turn, believes both are good until they otherwise prove themselves not to be. Vanessa has been said to trust very easily, and at times, too easily. It’s often how she is hurt or frustrated because of things people say or do.
When it comes to her own will though, Vanessa is a very determined individual. School doesn’t come easy for her, and therefore she has to work harder than it seems everyone else has to. She’s diligent and until her homework is complete, will not do anything that could ruin her concentration or focus. However, as this may be so, Vanessa is easily distracted. It’s why a lot of the times if she does have something she needs to accomplish, she hides away in a corner of a room somewhere and doesn’t reappear until absolutely needing to.
Not very outspoken, Vanessa tends to keep things to herself, bottling up any emotions and thoughts that come to her. She doesn’t have very many outlets when it comes to actual people, so she has to find something for her hands to do idly to work out her frustrations and let her mind focus through the issue that she may or may not have. It’s why a lot of the spare time she has is spent singing to herself when she finds that no one is around, or in fact knitting. Vanessa takes the simple pleasures in life for all they are worth and never tries to take anything for granted if she can.
[ History: ]
While Jill was working at St. Mungo’s Hospital, she had to talk to a scientist who came up for a new magical cure for a magical illness. It was part of her job to learn new magical medical techniques and teach them to her colleagues. Although this happened frequently, she never saw the same scientist twice. That was of course, until the day that Riley came in to teach a new technique. It was as if they’d met before, and though the two couldn’t place where the familiarity with each other lied, they both couldn’t keep away from each other for to long.
It was a fast and sudden romance, one that neither would surely forget, even after death. Within eight months, the two were engaged only later married exactly one year and a day after their engagement. The wedding was small and only family and close friends were invited, but that’s the way they liked it. As simple and perfect as it could get.
Jill and Riley were married for two years before they decided to have a child. They had a daughter, Vanessa, and she was born on a cold winter’s morning in December. When Vanessa was three, they had another child Victor (Vanessa’s brother). Unlike Vanessa, however, Victor would grow up into a pureblooded family of witches and wizards with no magical talent at all. His blood still flowed with it in him, but to most and to his parents, he was in fact a squib.
Neither Jillian or Riley cared though, for their children, magical or not, were their lives. And Vanessa wasn’t one to ever poke fun of him for something as sensitive as what having no magic in a wizarding family could be.
Due to the age difference, Vanessa and her brother became very close. They told each other their secrets and confided in one another even more than anyone else, be it friends or their parents. Though, sometimes, as siblings go, she became annoyed with Victor and wished he didn’t always want to “tag” along with her, but she understood that as the older child, that was her responsibility.
Vanessa didn’t always like being the older sibling. She felt like she had to be perfect and couldn’t do anything wrong or make mistakes because she had to set the example. With this mind set, she strived to stay out of trouble and do well in her studies. With her school work, her parents believed that their daughter could do better without understanding that Vanessa is doing the best she can do. However, unlike some parents, they never rode her hard about it or pressured her too much because they also knew that Vanessa’s withdrawal of emotions could put her at risk for many illness’, so instead they were the kind of parents that always tried to push her into not only how to study better, but also other constructive activities to help her with her emotional withdrawal and her focusing issues.
That was the time in Vanessa’s life where she began to sing, for better or worse, and eventually she also learned to knit. Vanessa learned how to knit at a young age from her mother. It was at the first sign of her lack of emotional reactions to certain things that her mother had become concern and her parents decided to help her learn ways to let things out that bothered her, even when she didn’t want to tell anyone straight out. As of now, she can knit anything as simple as scarves to mittens to sweaters. When she becomes angry or frustrated, she learned that sometimes knitting helps her think things through.
Growing up though, Vanessa did have one friend named, Tanya. They were best friends and nextdoor neighbors in the muggle community that the Sanderson’s lived in. When they were young, their parents would set up play dates for them. They would do pretty much everything together (and sometimes Victor too).
When Vanessa received the invitation to study at Hogwarts, she was very excited to be able to go away to school. This, she thinks, will be her freedom to be able to make mistakes and not have to be told that she needs to set an example for her younger brother. However, it also put another stress on her heart because her friend Tanya is muggle. Not really understanding the difference, Vanessa was never sure how to distinguish certain people from others. In her way of seeing the world, people were people. Some were magical and others were not, but in the end, magic was separate from the non magical world and she couldn’t tell a soul about where she was going to school. Vanessa, not understanding what this meant exactly, stopped talking to Tanya completely thinking that they were not allowed to be friends because of Hogwarts.
As much as Hogwarts was her freedom, it was also her biggest heartbreak.
However, not understanding their own daughter’s way of thought, they sent her to Hogwarts, excited that she had the magical gift that they knew she possessed in her blood. On the day she left for school, her parents give her a black and white speckled owl, named pepper to keep in touch with them about everything that ever happens at the school. After her years at Hogwarts, practically flying by, Pepper was probably the only thing that Vanessa ever allowed as close to her as Tanya was.
It’s been six years, and within that time, eventful things occurred and yet, it always felt like Vanessa was on the outside of the glass box, looking into a world that she could touch, but never really be apart of. Now in her final and last year of school, Vanessa has learned all the magic, conquered all of obstacles that had lied in her way, and yet is still very disconnected from the world and from her peers around her at the school. She wishes secretly for more out of life, and for more connection with others. And above everything else… she wishes she could really be set free.
[ Pros and Cons: ]
Knitting helps her as an outlet for her frustrations and concerns of the day. Vanessa’s pros all are very much reactions or to help her cons in a way. If she’s feeling confused, unfocused, or in any way disorientated or frustrated her hands and mind need to remain active and it’s one reason her mother taught her the talent of knitting when she was a young child. It helps keep her focused on what really matters and what doesn’t, and it also helps her mind work through the problems it may or may not be facing that day.
Diligent and a hard worker come out of Vanessa Sanderson because unlike some, school doesn’t come easy to her and she has to work very hard for the grades she does achieve. She also has a younger brother at home that she wants to make very proud, so in order to do so and to show him how to be a good student himself, Vanessa strives hard for her excellence… even if it is only an average ‘B’ student kind of excellence.
Likes and trusts everyone until they prove that they cannot be trusted. This can also be derived as a con in a way, due to the fact that she has been known to trust way to easily and is often hurt by those she trusts blindly. However, if someone is looking for a good friend and confidant, then Vanessa is a loving and caring individual that will take one’s word as gold, until otherwise proven that the person’s word was actually pyrite.
Cannot focus well without being completely secluded from all life. It’s true, in order for her to be the diligent worker she has to be, Vanessa has to close herself off from everyone in order to focus or accomplish anything. When there are distractions around her, she is unable to keep her mind set on the things she needs to do. It’s one reason why she always seems unsociable or on the outside.
Socially unable to understand why people do things they do and it frustrates and upsets her. Vanessa doesn’t understand people, but then again, how many of us really understand why people really do the things they do? And this really upsets Vanessa and confuses her about who people are. It makes her fear getting to know people and also makes her feel as if she doesn’t belong. Her lack of understanding also pushes her into her self more emotionally, and in the end, her last con is what it all comes down to.
Her last con being that Vanessa often feels disconnected with the world and the people within it. It’s as if she’s looking at it as if it were a movie or play. The world moves in front of her, and she’s too much of an observer to jump into it, especially if there are people in it that for one reason or another she feels she actually CANNOT trust. Of course, this doesn’t happen often, but because it has happened in the past, Vanessa is always more afraid to do anything without thinking, and then thinking leads to her focusing problem, and then focusing leads to her knitting to think about things, which often means she’s alone while doing such things, which in the end makes her alone, causes her to look as if she wants to be alone when really all she wants is to be one of the girls and have friends and be around people who really care about her. Vanessa feels trapped within her own circumstance, as if the glass box is reality… and she’s no longer able to get into it.
