Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] Jahan Samara
[ Nickname: ] Jay
[ Character Gender: ] Male
[ Birthday: ] February 27, 1996
[ Country of Citizenship: ] UK, Iran
[ Blood: ] Muggleborn
[ Race: ] Caucasian
[ Physical Character Description: ]
When you look at Jay, two words come to mind: “messy” and “cool.” With his messy hair, laid back posture, and air of comfort, he practically radiates relaxation. He is prone to lounging, and never really seems to have any idea what he’s doing.
His short, spiky orange hair looks like it’s never seen a comb, and his face has a habit of forming itself into an unshakably calm expression. People frequently wonder, “Is he really that calm, or is he faking it?”
He’s around 5’ 1, and you’d believe it. He’s one of the shortest people of his age. But with his unbelievably calm exterior, he really doesn’t have to deal with being the butt of many jokes. It’s just not as much fun if the target doesn’t care.
He definitely isn’t what you would call “fat,” but he isn’t skinny either. He falls somewhere in that grey area. He eats quite a bit, but has a fast metabolism that keeps him from getting big. He also doesn’t sport a lot of muscle. He’s almost scrawny, but not quite there.
On days where he doesn’t have to wear his school robes, Jay will most likely wear his muggle clothes. These usually consist of blue jeans, a shirt with a band’s name on it, and tennis shoes.
[ Personality Character Description: ]
Despite his unflappable façade, Jay is in reality very insecure and unsure of himself. As a muggle kid, he had gotten no greater joy than when he was listening to his music. Being thrust into the world of magic, in which electronics weren’t allowed, that was what he missed the most. His iPod.
During his trademark “Think and Lounge” sessions, he will sometimes start creating songs. Most of these are rockish, bordering on metal. He has a high capacity for hearing the notes and instruments in his head, and rarely writes the score down. He is good with melody and rhythm, but cannot do lyrics at all.
Jay approaches every situation with the same strategy: keep your mouth shut and your head down until you know enough to talk. His muggle friends had always known him as the kind of guy who would barely talk to anyone outside his circle of close friends. This actually worked out pretty well for him, until he got pulled out of that circle.
Over his first two years, Jay had been so worried that he might screw up and followed his strategy so closely that he had probably lost a couple of opportunities at friendship. He realizes this now, but he still makes the very same mistakes. But now he feels that he’s got the whole wizard thing under his belt, and he’s ready to try to make friends.
When it comes to his studies, Jay doesn’t excel. He gets by with the bare minimum of work, and stops. His teachers are always telling him that he squanders his potential and that he could do a lot more than what he does, but he doesn’t really care all that much. As long as he doesn’t fail, it’s cool with him.
Jay has never really enjoyed sports. Really, it seemed like too much attention for no real payoff. The only sport he had ever really tried was football, but he had one game when he was seven years old, where he fee over and was trampled that ruined that game for him. He does, however, enjoy spectating, and will often be at Quidditch matches.
[ History: ]
Jay was born to the muggles Navid Samara and Joanne Nelson. Navid was born and lived in Iran, despite being Caucasian. His birth parents had been French and big on traveling, having started on a large cross-continental trip when he was a baby. On their way through Iran, though, they were killed. Nobody knew who the surviving baby was, but he was adopted by the Samara family.
During the First Gulf War (1980-1988), Navid fled the country. He moved to Greece, following some sort of instinct, and lived there for several years. In 1990, that same instinct struck again, although this time it told him to move to England. Seeing as Greece had been good to him, he decided to listen to that instinct again.
Joanne had never been pampered, but she had led a relatively easy life. She was middle class, and she didn’t have to deal with the burdens of not having enough money to get by. She had always loved kids, and she ended up becoming a Preschool teacher.
Navid and Joanne met at a cafe in London, and fell in love. They got married in the summer of 1993, and their son was born three years later in England. They bought a small house, nothing fancy, but better than a flat.
Jay had an easy childhood, if not as easy as his mother’s. He was never quick to make friends, but when he made them they were really good and lasting friendships. He usually got new clothes when he outgrew his old ones, and while he had few toys, this suited him, as he preferred to use his imagination.
His parents had convinced him to save enough money for about a year of drum lessons. He had always wanted to be a drummer, but lessons and equipment were expensive. His parents could never afford to buy him a drum set. At Hogwarts, Jay found a spell to cast on his sticks so that he could play and have accurate noise without the drums themselves, but he's been too nervous to try it.
When he learned that he was a wizard, he took it in stride. If he could have been a wizard secretly and still gone on with his muggle life as it was, he would have. But they insisted on sending him off to Hogwarts to learn how to do it right. Which made sense, but he still didn’t like it.
During his first year, Jay spent most of his time observing the older students and trying to get an idea of some of the proper etiquette for being magical. His worst fear was that if he didn’t, he would make some stupid mistake and ruin his reputation and look like an idiot. He learned the spells and potions well enough, but it wasn’t like he was amazingly brilliant.
His second year passed much like his first, with him mostly watching and learning from the people around him. He continued to meet expectations in his studies, but had a habit of drifting off during lectures.
Over the summer before his third year, he made a resolution to be more outgoing this year and make friends. His fear is no longer that he’ll slip up, now it’s the fear that he’ll wait too long and end up sabotaging any chance he might have at friendship. However, no matter what he promises himself he’ll do, he still has to deal with his own habits of seclusion.
[ Pros and Cons: ]
Pros:
You can always trust Jay. He can keep a secret, and he’ll have your back. Overall, he makes a good friend.
Jay has strong morals. That’s not to say he never makes mistakes. But when he does, it’s probably because he believes it’s the right thing to do at the time.
He has a really small ego. You won’t hear him bragging about much of anything. He always knows that whatever he’s done could have been done better.
He usually has faith in others. If you tell him something, he’ll probably believe you, and he is quick to trust people.
Cons:
Jay is really hard to approach and make friends with. He will sometimes alienate people that try to reach out to him without realizing it until afterward.
He is really self-conscious, though you wouldn’t know it. He is always second-guessing himself, and he criticizes every decision he makes.
He is a bit of a perfectionist, and often won’t acknowledge what he has for what it’s worth because he knows it could be better.
[ Role Playing Example: ]
Jay walked own into the common room and sat down in a chair. Glancing around, he noticed that the room was empty. No surprise there. He was frequently the first person up in the mornings. He liked the silence. Silence is golden.
As he sat, a beat started to come to him. Tak, tst-tst, tak, tst-tst. He listened to the beat a while, added some bass drum on every beat, and was satisfied. On top of this he put a nice walking bass guitar part. He had to change this a bit as well, but he liked it. Before he could even think about it, a keyboard part came in and formed a nice countermelody to the bass. Then the guitar started with chords. Now the only thing left were the vocals. This was the hardest part.
He got about halfway thought the song before he noticed more people beginning to come down into the common room. He figured it would be quieter down in the Great Hall, and he was definitely starting to get hungry. So, he got up and went down to breakfast.
