Excellent character! Accepted. Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] Ben Marshall
[ Character Gender: ] Male
[ Country of Citizenship: ] England
[ Physical Character Description: ] Ben is your average looking English boy. He’s not completely and utterly gorgeous, and he doesn’t have a ripped, tanned body. But that doesn’t mean he’s an eyesore either. He’s been told otherwise, but Ben doesn’t really believe it. The most common term that he’s heard and actually agrees with is “cute”, but that’s about it. Ben doesn’t necessarily think he’s “cute”, but it’s easier to agree than fight with people.
Ben’s hair is fiery red in colour, and fairly long, hanging just below his ears and just above his shoulders, but it is always a mess. His hair never wants to stay down, but when it does, it just looks matted and gross, so he’s stopped fighting with it and often sports the “I-just-got-out-of-bed-and-I-don’t-care-what-I-look-like” look. The colour of his hair is all natural of course, as both his parents had the some colour, and he’s got more freckles than you can count. They tend to become more visible in the sun, but they usually stand out anyways.
Ben’s clothing style is fairly relaxed, usually just hanging out in a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Ben rarely wears anything other than this. His jeans all pretty much look the same; torn, faded and baggy. Always. It never changes and it probably never will. And when it comes to having to dress up, Ben’s idea of “looking nice” is just throwing a blazer on top of his regular clothing and then trying to fight with his uncooperative hair. If he really has to, Ben can spring for some dress pants, but those moments and few and far between.
Shoes. Ben’s not really big on what’s in and what’s out when it comes to shoes. Well, he’s not really big on what’s in and what’s out in any other aspect, but apparently its evident most in his footwear. From Converse high tops to the “used-to-be-white-but-now-they’re-gray” skateboard shoes, all of Ben’s footwear is pretty old. It’s possible that he doesn’t have a pair that isn’t falling apart at the seams, or have the backs broken down from slipping them on and off without untying them, much to his mother’s dismay. Ben doesn’t ever really care what his shoes look like. They’re shoes. They cover his gargantuan, Sasquatch feet, and if they can do that, they’re good.
[ Personality Character Description: ] What can be said about Ben? Ben is an average teenager boy, simply put. He’s a goofball and likes to hang out with his friends. He causes trouble more than he fixes it but that’s what boys do. He’s slightly more mature than most of his friends, but usually acts just like any other boy. Depending on who is around at the time, Ben will act differently. Around his friends, he fools around, cracking jokes and just having fun, but if he’s in class, he’s almost the perfect student but not by his own choice. School is not his forte, so he makes himself listen and pay attention in class, even though it still doesn’t do anything for him. Also, if Ben is around teachers or other authority figures, he’d perfectly nice and polite. He knows when he should act differently around certain people and knows to what his mouth when he’s not around his friends. Sometimes however, he does slip up and will swear in front of a teacher, but it wouldn’t be the first time and it won’t be the last.
Most of the time, Ben controls the way he acts around certain people, but there’s one group of people that he can’t control himself around: the girls. Ben is downright shoddy when it comes to talking to girls, even if it’s just to say hello. He gets tongue-tied and stupid and normally can’t even come up with anything that’s even remotely similar to the English language. He can’t help that he’s awful with girls and it’s not like he enjoys it either. Once he gets more comfortable around girl, he can sometimes speak in proper sentences but it takes him a while to really get comfortable with a person, girl or not. He doesn’t have any trust issues or anything of the sort, he just gets shy around new people and has to take his time getting to know them. Once he’s got to know someone a little better, Ben can be a really sweet and nice guy.
Ben is the kind of boy who would do anything you asked him too. As stated before, Ben is just a nice guy. He’d help you with your homework if you asked him to, although it’s highly doubtful that anyone would actually ask him. He’s usually the one asking for help. But in any other situation, Ben would help you out. He would stick up for you, even if you were wrong. He kind of lives by the “I may not agree with what you say but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it” quote and believes it’s true. He’s about fairness and equality and wouldn’t exclude anyone from anything, no matter who they were. Growing up in a house as the youngest of 4 children, Ben knows what it’s like to be left out and so he doesn’t want anyone else to have to feel like that.
While in general he’s a nice guy, Ben’s got a quick temper and a bit of an impulse control problem. In a heated discussion, Ben tends to let whatever’s in his head come out of his mouth without much consideration of the consequences and it’s usually something highly offensive to whoever he’s fighting with. He’s hot-headed and stubborn and isn’t the type to apologize until he’s calmed down a bit. Even then, it’s a struggle for him to admit that he’s wrong and to actually give a real and sincere apology to someone. He hates being wrong and hates having it proved that he’s wrong.
When push comes to shove, Ben would step in for pretty much anyone. He’s not the type to start fights, but he would step in to break one up or to defend someone. Ben is also very loyal as well, and brave when it comes right down to it. He likes adventure and is usually the first person that jumps into a situation that could potentially be dangerous. But as long as there’s a good story to be told afterward, Ben’s game.
[ History: ] The life of Benjamin Marshall up to this point has been a roller coaster, to say the least. His childhood consisted of wondering when his father was going to be home again. He was a journalist for the London Times and traveled all over the world for work. Ben never really got to know father and most of the time only ever had a relationship with his voicemail. By the age of seven, Ben was used to his dad not being around and he missed out on a lot of stuff. Ben’s mother, a witch, had to care for him and his three brothers all by herself while Ben’s dad was away for work but she never once complained. To Ben, his mum was a great role model. She was determined and never gave up and Ben loved that about her.
From a young age, Ben knew he was a wizard. He was the only one of the 4 boys to be one and his mother was a witch. While his brothers attended Muggle schools, Ben stayed home and was taught rudimentary magic by his mother. She taught him simple things like proper wrist movements for certain spells and charms that required it, but that was all Ben really learned. He couldn’t do much without getting in trouble with the Ministry. For Ben, “magic class” at home was the highlight of his day, not only because he was learning magic, but because he got to spend time with his mum. They always had a really good relationship and Ben knew he could always go to her.
At age 9, Ben experienced real tragedy for the first time. His mum and his eldest brother were in a terrible car accident and his brother didn’t make it. For a while, they thought Ben’s mum wasn’t going to pull through either, but she eventually did. However, she was not the same woman. Ben noticed a little change in her, but as he grew older, it only got worse. Eventually, just as he was about to start school, Ben’s mum completely lost the plot was sent off to St. Mungo’s. Despite the loss of their mother, Ben’s father didn’t seem to be around nearly as much as before. He sent Ben off to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts, thinking it was better for him. It was clear after a few days that this was not a place Ben would ever fit in. Nor did he actually want to.
After a few grueling years at the institute, Ben’s father finally agreed to let him attend Hogwarts. At least it was closer to home.
[ Pros and Cons : ] Loyalty- Ben’s loyalty knows no bounds. He would never in a million years betray the trust of the people he cares about. He likes to believe that people know how loyal he is and would trust him as much as he trusts other people.
Stubbornness- Ben is probably one of the most stubborn people anyone will ever meet. He will never admit that he’s wrong and it takes a long time for him to work up the courage to admit he’s wrong. When his mind is set in one particular way, there is no changing it unless there’s a very good reason to.
Bravery- Ben likes to believe he’s brave. He thinks he made a pretty good example of it when he was struggling with the loss of his mum and brother. He tried his hardest to keep going on and not let it affect him so much, at least when he was with the rest of his family. He tried his best to stay strong and his still trying.
Quick Temper- Ben’s got a wicked fast temper and it’s not a pretty sight. One should take that quite literally as well, because when Ben gets angry his face flares up to almost the colour of his fiery hair. It takes him a while to calm down, but when he does and he’s back to his goofy self, he’s a lot more fun to be around.
Humour- Whether it’s intentional or not, Ben’s a funny guy and he knows how to cheer people up when they’re down. He likes to laugh and he likes to make others laugh as well. More then once, his mother suggested that he become a stand-up comedian, but that was quickly vetoed by the non-existent father.
Inability to talk to girls- Decidedly, the worst thing about Ben, from Ben’s point of view. He hates that he can’t talk to girls. He knows it should be so difficult, but he can’t help it. Sometimes it’s been described as “cute” but in his opinion, he’s just pathetic.
[Role Playing Example:] There were few sounds in the Marshall house these days. One sound that could be heard now was the sharp beep, signally a phone being turned off. Ben heaved a sigh, dropping the phone on his bed next to him and lying back, hands covering his face. Once again, his father was unreachable, off someone in some exotic country doing Merlin knew what for the London Times. It was the third week now that he was gone. How much information could he possibly need?
Sitting up suddenly, Ben noticed a flicker of fire-red hair trotting past his room, his second eldest brother James out in the hall.
“Hey, what did Dad say when you asked him about this weekend?” James inquired. All Ben could do was scoff and roll his eyes.
“ ‘You’ve reached Robert Marshall..’,” Ben repeated, mocking the same voice message that all the Marshall boys knew too well, “ ‘I’ll be in the Ivory Coast for the next 57 years…” The bitterness nipped at the red-haired boy’s tone.
