[ Physical Character Description: ] Being mainly of Spaniard and Arabic descent, Layla is a display of many characteristics that are common in both ethnic groups. Her brown and slightly wavy hair lingers half way down her back, and is manageable on most days. She usually keeps it loose with her long bangs hanging to one side and tucked behind her right ear. In the sunlight, one can see the natural highlights, as they weave in and out of the full length of her hair. Her complexion is a soft and natural light brown that tans slightly and will betray her into a mad blush when she is embarrassed or bashful. Deep green eyes and fine lips accentuate her slim face. Layla stands at a solid 5’7’’, yet is a bit on the thin side recently. She is much more accustomed to being a little fuller and much more enthusiastic about food.
[ Personality Character Description: ]
After spending so much time alone Layla has proven to have the capacity to develop odd habits… revealing bouts of quirkiness. Generally she is still kind and sympathetic as ever, intelligent and intuitive as well. She loves to learn and perfect things she is interested in. As a Ravenclaw, the passion for learning is inherent. Her instinctive attention to details has always helped her excel in potions, her favorite subject. Recently, though, this skill has developed dramatically in Layla’s solitude. While she doesn’t realize it, it has made her a bit of a perfectionist. She tends to triple and quadruple check herself, overcorrects her handwriting and small details that were merely afterthoughts once.
After the day is through, Layla hasn’t lost her humor, kindness and cheeriness. It’s merely been subdued after being away and isolated for so long.
[ History: ] Layla’s family mostly comes from a long line of marriages between families of Spaniard-Arabic mix, mostly from the provinces of Andalucía, Spain. Her parents met as college students and were quickly married. Somehow they were both able to maintain successful and active careers up until Isabel became pregnant. Without a second thought, they both took teaching and research positions in London and began building a family. Layla soon became a sister to a boy, Esteban, and then later a girl, Arcelia. Layla was instantly smitten and had naturally taken charge over her siblings. It was also natural when her brother was a bit confused to see her sister go away to a new school, one that she and their parents seemed to describe only vaguely. He wasn’t used to secrets and felt left out. Even today Layla still struggles with her brother; not so much for being a witch but because he felt like he something was hidden from him when he had looked up to her.
Layla’s first couple of years at Hogwarts was almost a blur. Not only did she really learn how different she was, but also it’s implications. Eventually the troubles of being muggle born reached Layla’s parents, and they immediately took her out of school… fearing for her life. After weeks of shouting and protesting, they hesitantly allowed her back in school. But it didn’t last for long. With the news that muggle borns being targeted again, Layla’s parents pulled her out of Hogwarts once again. Enraged and helpless, Layla retreated into her room and resolved to ignore them entirely. She had refused to attend the muggle school they had arranged for her to go, refused meals and never spoke to them unless they happened to catch her in the kitchen when she tried to sneak a snack.
It was several weeks before she finally spoke to them, which resulted in a compromise. After hours of shouting and crying, they agreed to allow Layla to continue her wizarding training, but from their home. She almost couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t Hogwarts, but it was certainly better than nothing at all. The arrangements were placed for her to study from the muggle world, though she was still not allowed to perform any unsupervised magic. Every once in a while she was allowed into Diagon Alley, and it was only there that she could practice just a bit. Those were the few days that she wasn’t entirely ill tempered and irritable with her parents. It was nothing like the bright and cheery daughter they once had but they feared for her life and would keep her away from the wizarding world for as long as they could.
This, of course, only lasted until Layla became of age. Planning months in advance, Layla had spoken to the headmistress about her return and she was assured that there was always a place for her in Ravenclaw Tower. While she waited, she had tried to draft several letters for her friends to let them know, but each time her mind simply drew a blank. This happened every day until she realized that she would probably arrive to the castle before the owl did.
Layla had never discussed her plans with her parents or siblings, but they knew she was leaving. They saw her demeanor brighten just a little every day as her birthday approached. Right before her birthday, Layla had walked down the stairs to the kitchen one last time. She quickly scribbled a note and boarded the Knight Bus by the stroke of midnight.
[ Pros and Cons : ] Layla has a strong sense of loyalty to those she cares for. Though she is not currently on the best terms with her family, she still is very protective of her younger siblings and still holds her parents in high regard. Her friends are what get her through the day, no matter what it may be like. She naturally holds them close to her heart and would do anything for there. There are times however, when Layla is so deep into caring for someone else that she can almost forget about herself. It’s not until later that she realized how she’s worn herself out. The strength of her loyalty applies to her scorn. There have been very few people to drop out of Layla’s good graces, but when they do they are seldom forgiven. She is aware of her dedication and not only is resentful of betrayal but also of not being regarded equally by someone she cared for. At this point she becomes stubborn, irritable and almost unreasonable.
In general Layla works with others and is open to suggestion, but ultimately she tends to grasp as much control as possible. Though it is mostly for fear of doing something improperly; she sometimes comes off as being snobby and condescending. It’s an unfair trait that Ravenclaws sometimes get, but it is inevitable. She is somewhat of a perfectionist and the only way to get something done is to do it on her own, or at least exert the most possible influence over it so that it reaches perfection.

The landscape slowly escaped behind Layla’s eyesight as the train steamed its way towards Hogwarts. Layla had closed her eyes for what seemed like a moment. But when she opened her eyes whatever the Scottish landscape had to offer was barely visible in the dark night outside the train car. Slightly exasperated, she fumbled with her backpack and searched for her Charms book. She had wanted to finish catching up on her reading, though the task seemed so out of reach. She had thought she would be fine on her own but as her proximity to the castle dawn upon her she felt as if she was completely unprepared and would make a fool of her House. She hadn’t even practiced while she waited for the train at the platform, pacing back and forth and checking her watch constantly, almost afraid that it had already left without her. Her nerves strained her concentration and only made her green eyes of properly absorbing any material.
Closing the book again and stroking the leather binding, she bent over to put her book away in defeat. Her tired green eyes saw something slip out of the pages, and slip through the air before it landed on the carpeted ground. She bend further t reach for it and turned it over to see that it was actually a photo. Layla’s stomach dropped slightly when she recognized the smiling faces in the photo. She lightly passed a thin finger over each person, each seeming miffed at the finger obstructing their image, but automatically went back to waving and smiling after her finger had moved. She would certainly miss them the day she wasn’t so upset at them. But until then, she took the only wizarding picture taken of her family and placed it in between a set of unknown pages, smothering their smiles. She tore her gaze away from her book and looked out again, finally seeing the distinct twilight of Hogwarts in the distance.
