Henry had been happier than he had been in a long time when he walked out of the barrier at platform nine and three quarters to find his mother and father waiting for him. He had been even happier on the afternoon of July first when he, his mother, and his father had gone to London Heathrow to pick up a very special guest: His cousin, Peter.
Peter had arranged to stay for the remainder of the holidays, so he was able to be around on the seventh of July, a very important day for the family.
On the fourth of July, the family all headed out to Henry's mother's favorite restaurant for dinner, and enjoyed a nice long night on the town. The fourth was Allison's birthday, and she just wanted to have a good time out on the town that day.
The seventh was, and is the birthdays of both Henry Sr., and Henry Jr., and, before he died (on this very day no less), it had been John Lordings' birthday as well.
Paying no mind to the darker side of the particular day, the whole family, Peter included, spent a memorable day around London shopping, eating, and even managing to catch a movie at the cinema. This was, for both Henrys, an excellently spent birthday, and as they sat down that night to a home cooked meal (courtesy of Henry's mother, whose birthday it had been not three days previous), they couldn't possibly have guessed what they would shortly be doing.
"You know, I always felt that that store was highly overrated." said Henry Sr., having just swallowed a piece of chicken, and referring to a large chain store back in Seattle that had gone out of business; The subject had been brought up by Peter. "They never did keep themselves well stocked, and when they did, it was nothing you wanted to buy."
"Agreed." said Peter, raising his glass of red wine; Henry (Jr.) nodded too, taking a sip from his own wineglass (it was, though Peter didn't know it, Henry's coming of age today, as it was his seventeenth, and he had been given wine as opposed to tea, though he knew he preferred the tea.)
"I remember them having a decent enough assortment of dishes." said Allison off-handedly
"True enough." said Henry Sr. "But, you know, everyone used to swear by the place; You would have thought it was eden on earth."
Everyone chuckled appreciatively, and then silence fell for a good amount of time, in which only the clatter of silverware broke the silence. Finally, as though she couldn't bare the silence any longer, Henry's mother set down her knife and fork, and said in a very important tone...
"I have an announcement to make."
The three men at the table exchanged quick glances, and then placed their silverware down as well, and turned their undivided attention to her.
"I have just..." she sighed deeply; She almost looked as though she suddenly didn't want to say anymore. Eventually, she spoke once more "I have just, about a month ago, found out something very...well...important."
"What is it, dear?" said Henry's father encouragingly "What have you found out?"
"Well," she said "As today is such an important day, full of good news, I thought I might as well share mine as well..."
Everyone was watching her with baited breath, though Henry had a sudden, ridiculous, and yet thrilling idea about what this news was.
"And?" Henry's father pushed once more.
After a brief pause where she simply stared at her husband, Henry's mother said "I'm...pregnant."
Peter snorted, but his face had broken into the widest of smiles; Henry (Jr.) had a quite similar look on his face, though inside he couldn't quite believe what he had just heard. Henry Sr., on the other hand, was staring at his wife with a whimsical look frozen on his face, and his mouth twisted into a slack half smile.
"How long?" asked Peter "Until the baby is born, that is?"
"They estimate around Christmas." said Allison; Her face was glowing slightly red, and she was beaming at them all.
"So that's why you haven't been drinking any wine, while insisting I have some?" said Henry slyly to his mother's nods.
There was a knock on the door, and they all looked around. Through the glass, Henry could just make out the face of a woman named Milly, who lived nearby, and was a good friend of his mother's. His mother sprang to her feet, and rushed for the front door.
Milly, and Henry's mother enjoyed a chat in the front room while the men stayed in the kitchen. Henry's father had shaken himself out of it enough to head strait over to the liquor cabinet, and pull out a glass and a bottle which he didn't even look at before pouring himself a glass full. Henry (Jr.), who recognized what the liquid was, tried to warn his father, but too late; He downed it in one.
It took a second, and then his father spluttered loudly, and turned the bottle over to look at the label.
"HmmHmm..." he coughed "Ogden's Old Fire-Whiskey..."
