"It's kind of hard to date when you're stuck at school ten months out of the year," he told her, thinking it was also hard to do much dating when they were out of school, but he decided to keep that bit to himself.
He liked hearing her talk about when she and Mr. Hjort had been first seeing each other and had to smile at the story. It was difficult to think of Mr. Hjort being like that, but Drew figured the man proabably wasn't half as scary to anyone else.
He gave another bashful smile as she mentioned Felicity's point of view. He didn't want her to give up time with her friends just to be with him... but it kind of felt good that she did. "I really like spending time with her too," he told Felicity's mother, pushing the cookie crumbs around on his plate nervously. "Even when I mess things up, I think she still gets me better than anyone else. I'm think I'm getting better at understanding her too."

"I'm sure you made do," Meadow answered, winking at the boy. While she had never had a date while at school, she had heard of a number of the dates some boys and girls made while she was there. Some sounded so fantastical to be believable, but then even her ordinary dates she had had with Ib were too good to be true at times. "And when Felicity's spoken about them, it sounds like you have more than made do with the dating aspect of being in a relationship."
Standing up, the woman took her dishes to the sink before she started running water over them, thinking of letting them sit for a bit while she started dinner up and let Drew finish the dessert, Felicity wouldn't be home until later and neither would Ib, but she liked having her dinners prepared early in case she needed to make more than she had all ready prepared.
"I think you understand her more than most as well. I always thought Alexander was the one who knew her best, and perhaps that was true once, but now, I do believe you'd out beat anyone at knowing my Lissy." In actuality, she had always thought Alexander and Felicity would end up dating as well, but times and things changed, and as it was, Drew stepped into the picture before Felicity was even interested in going on a date and had managed to catch her eye quite easily.
"I'm glad though, that you enjoy spending time with her. I like when you're over here and I know things are awfully constrictive on the actual dating part, but I think you spending time here and letting Ib get to see you're not here to harm anyone, especially not Lissy, is a good thing. I know it's rough going, but she's his last little girl and he can't keep any of his other little girls close by since they're all happily married and pretty much on their own. Harold and Raquel have begun looking for their own place again, a small one, but his business is going rather well and she's not done too shabby for herself either."

"I can take care of the dishes," Drew offered, hopping out of his seat as Mrs. Hjort went to the sink and started the water. He would have helped out anyway, but considering the fact that she was ill, Drew wanted to make sure she got the rest she needed... and deserved. It had to be hard running a house with so many people even when you were in top form.
"They're looking for their own place? That's great!" Drew echoed, glad things were going well. He had always liked Harold who had always been nice to him and made him feel at ease.

"Oh now, I was just going to let them soak for a bit," Meadow shooed the tall boy, laughing lightly. "I was thinking maybe it's about time we got back to finishing dessert and starting dinner so we can make sure we have enough." Even when money was tighter than usual, the Hjort's always managed to have more than enough for anyone who set foot through their doorway and she enjoyed having a life like that. Pinching coins, saving here and there, clipping coupons, whatever it took. What was best was her children never complained.
"Mmhmm, they've been wanting a place of their own again for a while, but they're serious about it this time. They need room to let their own family grow more than they can here. Those two boys of theirs need their own rooms and we just can't do that here." Winthrop and Winston were getting to be a handful, but they were sweet too.

Drew laughed at he gentle scolding and moved to the sink to rewash his hands so he could finish the dessert. As long as he had the recipie he'd be okay completing it by himself, but he wasn't sure how much of a hand Mrs. Hjort wanted to have in it. He leaned against the counter and waited for directions while continuing the conversation.
"Yeah, you folks have a lot of room, but a lot of people filling those rooms up," he commented. "There's always something going on here. I like that." It was great that Harold and Raquel were going to get their own place, but Drew thought he might prefer the full house feeling. It was so much better than him and his aunt in a huge place by themselves with only the house elves to help fill it up.

Nodding along, Meadow only knew too well how there were a lot of people filling up their rooms. The house was relatively small, but with a bit of magic here and there (most Ib didn't know of), they were able to live comfortably with expanded room that was never revealed to a non-magic naked eye. When she moved to London with her two youngest siblings they had had a two bedroom apartment which had suited them well for the few years they were all on their own until Meadow and Ib had married and found a home large enough for them, plus a baby on the way. They had only moved once more since then, right after David had been born to allow more room for their growing family.
"I like the business, too. I always told Ib that a busy home is a happy one, I think that's why he didn't mind my want of a large family too much. He only had one sibling and his parents growing up," she mentioned. "Never had so many people around at once, sometimes I think it bothers him to be so near to the numbers we have, but he still enjoys it."
Pointing Drew to the rest of the ingredients, a cupboard away, Meadow began pulling out a few mixing bowls of her own to begin dinner, and a pot to parboil chicken in chicken broth for a casserole.

"One sibling and parents. That's like me," Drew said with a small smile. Of course, even with just the four of them, the Thornton house had been far from calm and quiet. He had seen to that personally. Plus, there were always grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins to keep things lively. "Of course, I've got a pretty tight extended family. I mean, we're not all under one roof, but we see each other a lot. Well... I mean, we did before my sister and I came out here." Living at Hogwarts for seven years taught him a lot about sharing living space with a fairly large group of people.
Mrs. Hjort directed him to the other things he'd need to finish the cake and he pulled the ingredients out of the cupboard without any problems. There was only one thing he needed. "Is there a recipie you wanted me to follow?" he asked. He usually did cake by the box.

"Quite more than you realize," Meadow mentioned more to herself than Drew. An older sibling, quite well off in his world, many opportunities their own children would never know from them, status in society, the want of his family for him to marry well. However, with the events that took place, leading Ib to believe the only choice he had was to flee, things turned out for less than he was told he'd have growing up, but he seemed to enjoy it. He took a low-paying job, worked his way up, met and fell in love with her, a poorer than a church mouse woman with two children to feed, and stretched everything they had to make things work.
If Andrew and Felicity stayed together, Drew's life would follow a little closer to Ib's than now, most likely. "I'm not sure how close Ib's been to his family other than his brother, but things happen and change in time."
"Oh, yes, yes," Meadow answered, her mind having drifted. Rifling through a few papers, she pulled out the recipe and handed it to the young man before turning back to her own bit of work.

Drew almost asked her what she meant by her comment, but then she continued speaking of Mr. Hjort and his family and Drew wondered exactly what had happened and changed. He didn't think it was his place to ask, but thought he might possibly ask Felicity about it at another time.
The hand off of the recipe got him focused on his task again and as he read it over, he moved through the kitchen confidently, picking up what he needed to finish off the cake. He gave a quick glance at the watch on his wrist to gauge how much longer until Felicity got home and figuring he'd probably be finished with the cake before she finished work.

--Time Lapse--
The time was getting nearer to when Felicity and Ib would return home, and Meadow had been quite enjoying Andrew's company, as she always did. Whether it was the youthfulness he contained, or the fact it was like having a son who was young again, Meadow was unsure, but having Drew nearby was nice. Someone to converse with, learn about, it was like meeting a new friend at a church function, someone that you felt you had known your whole life after just a few hours. Whatever it was, the feeling made her happy, and she didn't feel ill either.
With the cake cooling, and dinner warming up in the oven, Meadow began slicing homemade bread she'd baked the day before, hoping to finish it off so she could make another batch, as Ib preferred her to make only a few loaves at a time that way they didn't go to waste. And she was really craving cranberry walnut bread, but was clean out.
"Well, the two of them should be arriving her in a few moments," she commented, glancing up at the clock, actually sad to know she'd be giving up her time with the young man as her daughter stepping foot in the door would be a sure sign that she wanted the boy all to herself for as much time as she could get with him. Of course, that would only be a few hours as Felicity had work the next day and Drew wasn't often allowed to stay past eleven o'clock by Ib's rules. Sometimes he could stay later, but it depended on the next day's activities.

The time had gone faster than Drew had expected and just when he was starting to wonder if he should just go over to the restaraunt to share his news with Felicity, Mrs. Hjort noted the time and said she'd be home soon. He checked his own watch and smiled, feeling that excitement bubble up again. He'd get to see her when she walked through the door, he'd get to tell her his big news, and if he was lucky, she'd be so proud of him, she'd squeal in her own excitement and throw her arms around his neck.
Perhaps he'd wait to tell her when her dad wasn't in the room...

A few minutes later, Meadow slipped into one of the kitchen seats, knowing time went slowly the more you watched the clock, but hoping Ib and Felicity would arrive in a timely manner that day, for Drew's sake. It wouldn't be nice to keep the young man waiting when he was polite enough to drop in, even without warning. And he was more than welcome to in her own opinion, though Ib had a different one, but didn't seem to really mind that Drew didn't always call ahead of time, which could only mean good things.
Not longer after, the front door swung open, bringing with it the chatter of a young blonde's voice and that of her dad's gentle laughter. She was regalling him with a story about one of that customers that day, a regular, but he just didn't seem to know what he wanted that day. In the end, it'd left a very messy order slip and a slightly perturbed Harry, but a happy customer.
Just after slipping her shoes off, she started for the stairs, all plans on showering before dinner was served, but the call of her mum's voice stopped her at the bottom of the staircase.
"Felicity! I need you to come in here for a moment, please?" Meadow's voice filtered through the home, down the hall and into the open living area. Turning around, the blonde bounced her way down the hall, wondering if it'd take very long because she kind of really wanted to shower as she believed she smelled a bit like soup she'd spilled down her front earlier. But when she peeked into the kitchen, her brown eyes widened with delight at what she really thought her mum had wanted her for.

Drew had finished cleaning up the cake mess and was putting away the final mixing bowl when he heard Felicity's voice in the front hallway. Slipping the bowl back into the cupboard and shutting the door, he stood and faced the kitchen door, a wide grin on his face. He had almost forgotten how excited he was about his news, but Felicity's arrival renewed it tenfold. When her mother called her into the kitchen, he couldn't help it-- he did a traditional happy dance there in front of the refrigerator, grooving out to music only he could hear. He could tell she was surprised to see him and could barely wait to see her reaction to his big news.

The scent of one of her most favourite dishes was overwhelming, and she smiled, wondering if her mum needed help with finishing touches. If it really was one of her favourites, she was willing to skip the shower until a bit later. It wasn't until she walked right into the kitchen, allowing her nose to lead the way, that her eyes even took in the bigger surprise that made her know she was willing to skip a shower anytime for.
"Drew!" she exclaimed happily, clapping her hands together before skipping right up to him and throwing her arms around his middle. The dancing never bothered her, only when she knew he out-shined her by a million stars and couldn't keep up, but this kind she really liked. Cozying up to the tall boy was easy for her, but the sound of her dad's heavy footfalls coming their way made her loosen her grip a tad. No need to upset him when he'd been in a good mood on the walk home.
The shout of his daughter's voice made him grumble under his breath, but he knew there wasn't anything he could do about the situation...yet. In time he was still sure the boy would do something to upset Felicity again, enough to make her rid them all of the boy, but until that time, he could still glare and growl. And he was damn good at it if he said so himself, and he did.
"Andrew," he greeted gruffly, avoiding the young couple as he walked up to his wife and pecked her lightly on the cheek. A habit he'd had since first having the pleasure of greeting her at her home in the beginning stages of their dating.

Drew eagerly accepted the Gryffindor girl's embrace, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her off the floor slightly as he continued his dancing. The moment was over quickly, though. As soon as her father entered the room, he placed Felicity back on her feet and loosened his hold on her. The fact that the man was addressing him by name was a good sign and Drew really didn't want to blow it.
"Hello, Mr. Hjort," he answered, still unable to keep his grin from his face. His hands, though, were no longer around the girl but one found a nice spot holding one of hers.
