Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] Jeremy Grey
[ Character Gender: ] Male
[ Country of Citizenship: ] England
[ Physical Character Description: ] Jeremy Grey stands at 6 feet tall. Exactly. Not an inch shorter, not an inch taller, but 6 exactly. He has a tendency to correct people if they say he’s “6 something”, but he’s just anal that way. The 6 foot tall teenager is also in fairly good shape. He’s always been a bit of a jock, playing Muggle sports such as football, soccer and even surfing over his lifetime, but his real passion is the ever popular game of Quidditch. Being a Muggleborn with two brothers, Jeremy had the best of both sports worlds. Because of all the sports and training for them that Jeremy did, he now has a fairly toned body. The boy’s got muscles but he doesn’t really like showing it off. In fact, he doesn’t like showing anything off, and isn’t even too thrilled that he’s got such a cute face, as he’s been told.
Jeremy’s facial features really don’t match his body. His body is athletic and toned, while he facial features are soft and boyish. He doesn’t like to think that he’s all that good-looking, but he can’t really deny it. Having grown up and living in California for most of his life, Jeremy’s skin is also really tanned, freakishly soft. So what if he moisturizes? It makes him look nice.
Jeremy knows he is but doesn’t like to admit it, due to his lack of self confidence. The expression of Jeremy’s face is usually one of mischief, or one of shyness. Sometimes he can hide his shyness by just putting on his boyish grin, but his eyes always betray him. He’s a fairly good liar (as he generally has to lie about who he is and that will be explained later) but his eyes always show his true emotions. He’s been told he has “kind” eyes, very much like his father’s and his brothers’. All four of the men in the family are said to have the same eyes; the Grey eyes (which in fact are a dark brown/greenish color). Jeremy’s hair is the only thing that he really fixates on about his appearance. He’s really finicky about his hair and can sometimes spends more than an hour trying to make it work. If he gets lazy (which is often) he’ll just leave it down and not bother but if he wants to look nice, Jeremy will lock himself in the bathroom until he’s got it spiked just right and used tons of hair gel.
Jeremy is generally very self-conscious of his appearance and takes even longer to get dressed than he does to do his hair. He knows he’s got muscles, but he tried to wear baggy things so he doesn’t show them off too much. He normally wears just plain old Muggle clothes, jeans and a t-shirt, but he still has to make himself nice. He wouldn’t be caught dead in public in sweatpants, but they are his savior when he’s just hanging out at home and lounging around. The idea of dressing up is one that Jeremy does not enjoy, and wizarding robes are hateful in his opinion. However, he will suffer through them if it means he gets to go to Hogwarts. He knows Hogwarts is a more accepting school than most, and hopes he’ll be better except there than he is at his current school. His sexuality seems to be a bit of a problem with a lot of people.
[ Personality Character Description: ] Jeremy is gay. He’s known he is for a long time and he’s not ashamed of it. He is who he is and there’s nothing he can do about it, so people just need to live with it and accept him for who he is.
Jeremy is really self-conscious about everything that he does. When he walks into a room, he always feels like he’s being stared at and while he’s not obvious about it, he always thinks that people know he’s gay. He tries to stay as unnoticed as he can, but that doesn’t really work too great because he’s also a people-person. He likes meeting new people and socializing, but the nagging part of his brain always tries to make him slow down. Jeremy’s boyish charm is another thing that makes going unnoticed really difficult. People do tend to look at him when he enters a room, but that’s because he’s really cute. Even though he hates having people stare, he always takes so much time trying to get ready and look good. His boosts his self-esteem (which really needs boosting most of the time) and makes him not so self-conscious all the time. He thinks that if he just looks like a regular guy, people won’t suspect anything.
Jeremy’s known he was gay since he was 14. For the last few years, he’s only been ridiculed and singled-out as a freak, for his sexuality isn’t really accepted in the Muggle society. The cruel jokes and laughter hit hard the first time it happened and it has been the main reason for the deterioration of Jeremy’s self esteem. Lately, he’s gotten better but it still hurts and he’s not quite over it yet. Now instead of being hurt by the mean comments, Jeremy just gets pissed off.
When you get to know him, Jeremy is a really sweet guy. He’s sensitive and sympathetic because he knows what it’s like to be hurt and doesn’t want to be mean like the other people he knows. Jeremy is a guy who’s just really in touch with his emotions and it’s not just because he’s gay. He’s not afraid to tell people and let them know what he’s feeling, unless it has anything to do with his sexuality. Being gay is the only thing that makes Jeremy so anti-social when you first meet him, but once it’s out in the open, he’s more comfortable around people. The only problem is, it takes Jeremy a really long time to let it be out in the open. It’s the actual process of telling people that scares the life out of him.
Jeremy does not trust easily. He made the somewhat catastrophic mistake of coming out to someone that he was under the deceitful impression was his friend. It turned out that this person was indeed not Jeremy’s friend, and the whole thing blew up in his face and way out of proportion. Since then, Jeremy has had a big trust issue. It takes him a really long time to get to know people, as he tends to push them away at first. He’s learned now that he has to be careful who he tells things to, because of what had happened before. Jeremy even takes a really long time to tell people he’s Muggleborn, because that doesn’t really seem to go over too well in the wizarding world, and his sexuality is a big no-no in the Muggle world. Jeremy doesn’t really enjoy being so scare of letting people close, but he also hates to think of what will happen if his secret gets out and the wrong people find out. He doesn’t want to go ahead and trust the wrong people and have that catastrophe all over again.
Despite his lack of trust in others, Jeremy is a very trustworthy person himself. Others find it difficult to trust him when he can’t trust them, but he really is good at keeping secrets. With his friends (they exist, but are very few) they made up this thing where they like to call themselves the “no leaky sponges” which just means that whatever is said within the group, stays in the group. Jeremy likes to work that way and likes to believe he is a good sponge. Jeremy has got plenty of secrets and he’s good at keeping them, so he knows he’s good at keeping the secrets of others. He is also incredibly loyal, and knows what it’s like when your secret is out and you don’t want it to be, so he would never tell about any of his friends. Jeremy is a really nice guy, too nice a guy frankly, and would betray anyone, even if he wanted to. The teenagers has been betrayed, lied to and just generally screwed over. He likes to think that he’s a better person than the people who did him wrong (and lately he’s needed less convincing of that) and refuses to sink to their level of stupidity. At least, that much of him he can control.
Jeremy Grey does not fall into the stereotype that people have created for guys that are gay. It really pisses him off when people label him that way. He doesn’t walk a different way, he’s not overly and obvious flamboyant and he does NOT speak with the stereotypical “gay voice” as it’s called. He doesn’t have the lips and talks quite normally as a matter of fact, thank you very much, good day sir. Jeremy doesn’t make it blatantly obvious that he is what he is, although there are a few hints that he gives off unconsciously. Sometimes the things he says and doesn’t realize or the way he stands gives off the impression that he’s gay, but he can usually correct himself. If he notices. Jeremy even played a lot of sports as he was growing up, so no one ever really suspected he was gay, and he’s actually pretty tough when it comes to sports. He played a lot of football (English and American) and got extremely competitive. Any trace of his apparently “abnormal” sexuality is gone when he’s playing sports and really into it, and he just becomes a regular guy, which he likes the feeling of because he thinks he’s more accepted.
[ History: ] Jeremy Grey is a very…different boy. Some call him a freak and others just simply don’t bother talking to him. Having been ostracized over a stupid little thing like sexuality, Jeremy had found over his lifetime so far that it’s not really worth socializing with people. Most of the time. This is his life until now.
Born on May 31st, Jeremy Grey came into a Muggle family that had been living in Scotland at the time. Jeremy only lived there for about a year before his Muggle family moved back to America, in particular, Long Beach, California. As any California boy would, Jeremy spent his childhood and his teenage summer on the beach and in the ocean. At a young age, Jeremy took a particular interest in surfing, and got his first board at age 9. For a long time, Jeremy was really into surfing and literally spent entire days at the beach, trying to catch a good wave. Even at such a young age, Jeremy was actually pretty good, and only got better as he practiced. By age 10, Jeremy was already better than some 18 year old guys that he knew, but he’s not one to too his own horn. Being a good surfer by age 10 was a great thing for Jeremy, but that was the year that something else, something far more extraordinary, was revealed.
Jeremy received a letter from a place that was trying to tell him he was a wizard. He figured it must be some prank that a friend was trying to pull, but then the letter became more frequent. After the 14th letter, Jeremy decided it was more than just a hoax. Since first receiving a letter, strange things had been happening. Perhaps they were things he hadn’t noticed before, but did now since the idea had been put into his head. Either way, it freaked Jeremy right out. His parents didn’t believe that there was such a place that wanted to teach him magic, and the pile of letters was casually ignored again. Jeremy’s brothers, Joshua and Jonathan teased him constantly, but Jeremy was still convinced that such a place existed. It wasn’t until the 28th of August that anyone else believed him as well.
While enjoying a nice family dinner together, the Grey’s were suddenly interrupted when someone popped in for a visit. The pop was quite literal, as the Headmaster of this apparently non-existent magical school had Apparated into their dining room. Now, as one can imagine, the sudden Apparation of a man was not something that the Grey family was too accustomed too, and immediately tried to shoo the unwanted visitor out. Jeremy was the only one to speak up (and the only one fascinated) and gave the mane time to explain. Jeremy had it explained to him that he was indeed a wizard, and he couldn’t have been more thrilled. After about an hour of coaxing and begging and pleaded, a stunned pair of parents finally allowed Jeremy to attend this school, and he was soon whisked away to live with an aunt who lived closer to the school. This wizarding school was not a boarding school, and it was extremely difficult to get from home in Long Beach to the school that was in Bakersfield.
The wizarding world was such an incredible change from the same daily routine of the Muggle world. Jeremy was in awe for a couple of months even after he’d started school and already learned so much about it. It was the unexpected surprises that really made Jeremy fall in love with this world and want to forget the old one. He’d quickly become involved in this weird sport called Quidditch and it nearly wiped out his passion for surfing. For the few years that Jeremy attended this American school, everything seemed to be fine and all was right with the world. Until age 14, that is. All around him, his friends were starting to get all gaga over the girls. Everyone except him. For his guy friends, whenever they saw a girl they liked they either got really stupid, or tried to act cool. When Jeremy was around girls, he didn’t feel any different. It was when he was around the guys that he felt differently and he knew almost right away that he wasn’t like the rest of his friends. Jeremy was, in fact, gay.
For most of that school year, Jeremy kept it quiet and even his best girl friends didn’t know. He made it a point to not develop a crush on one of his guy friends, but he still began to act differently around them, and they started to get suspicious. As most of them were Muggleborns as well, that soon became the only thing that the boys had in common. Nearing the end of the year, Jeremy made a terrible mistake. He decided that it was time to come out, but unfortunately he came out to the wrong person. The guy who he had thought was his friend and thought he could trust didn’t seem to take the news all that well, and within a matter of days, the entire school knew and the ridicule began. Name-calling was the main form of humiliation the boy faced while at school for the last month. Jeremy changed drastically from the fun and outgoing young boy he was to one that was quiet and reserved, trying to stay out of the spotlight as much as he could. When he finally got home to Long Beach, Jeremy came out to his parents. Both his mom and, after letting it sink in, his dad were OK with it and supportive. His brothers were slightly less accepting. While it is not known if it was indeed them that passed it around (because Jeremy did come out to he closest friend from home but could have been overheard) but word soon got out at home and the name-calling was even worse.
No longer did Jeremy go down to the beach, and he gave up surfing completely, even though it was one of his biggest passions, aside from the newly developed passion of Quidditch. He spent that summer locked up in his room, mostly just sleeping or sitting on his bed and not doing much of anything. It was a long summer, and Jeremy had a lot of time to think things over. He knew he was gay and there was no denying it, but he soon became not so comfortable with himself. As much as he had loved the place before, Jeremy really had no desire to go back to school, but he went anyways. He barely made it half-way through the year before he snapped and he couldn’t take it anymore. One boy had been particularly vicious and Jeremy had been listening to him all day. It was nearing the end of the afternoon and all it took was a soft whisper of the word “faggot” for Jeremy to completely lose it. In the end, he beat the snot out of the boy until he was pulled off the bleeding stump of a human by a teacher. It was really unfortunate for Jeremy that he was already in such a rage already that he turned and socked the teacher as well, ultimately resulting in Jeremy’s expulsion from the school.
When Jeremy was sent packing half-way through the term, his parents were furious. They hadn’t been told why he was coming home, only that he’d gotten in major trouble. When he arrived on his doorstep, he was finally given the chance to explain himself, and his parents were slightly less angry. He’d earned more respect back from his brothers for beating the crap out of someone, but that was a small victory in a larger battle. He hadn’t that he had to physically fight someone to be respected by members of his family. When the idea of Hogwarts came up, Jeremy jumped at the chance. He couldn’t start right away because it was already half-way through the year, but when the summer was over, that’s where he knew he was going. He spent the rest of the summer in England with his grandmother, where he was able to get dual citizenship of both English and American. It was a new place and he could start fresh, and keep his secret to himself if he chose to, which he did. Jeremy wasn’t going to take a risk and make the same mistake again. Especially not in a place where he couldn’t escape, even if he wanted too.
[ Pros and Cons: ] Being gay and coming out about it has been both a blessing and a curse. He feels good that he doesn’t need to hide anymore and can be more comfortable in his own body, but it also has triggered a kind of self-hatred in Jeremy. Most of the people who know about him being gay are not okay with it and simply hate him because he’s different. The constant hatred from others has left its mark on Jeremy. However, he knows that there are a select few that are actually okay with it and to him, make a huge difference and make it seem like its okay to be himself.
From past experiences of being told one thing and having another happen, Jeremy doesn’t trust people too easily. In turn, that means people don’t trust him. Jeremy is a very trustworthy boy and would never betray the trust of anyone, but people don’t really understand that because Jeremy just doesn’t trust others. He tries to be more open and trusting, but still finds it hard to do.
Jeremy can’t hold a grudge. As much as he may want to hate a person forever, he’s simply incapable of doing so. This is good for his friends, for they know if something happens, like a little bickering, they will be forgiven. It’s a downfall on Jeremy’s part however, because people tend to take advantage of him. They can treat him terribly, but Jeremy just doesn’t have it in him to be mean to others and stay mad at them. He doesn’t like being mad and he doesn’t like having people mad at him, so he forgives easily, hoping others might follow.
[Role Playing Example:] Jeremy was pretty far off shore. He looked back at the beach, seeing the people standing there and they looked like ants from where he was. The good waves were crashing out farther and Jeremy had floated himself out there, belly-down on the yellow surf board. For a few moments, the boy just waited, floating around in the water and hoping for a good wave. When he looked out at the water, a smile graced his features as he saw big wave coming in. Getting ready for it, Jeremy turned his body so he was facing the incoming wave and began paddling out to meet it. As the wave began to crash, Jeremy pushed himself up onto the slippery board and turned again, riding the wave.
Riding along inside the crashing wave, Jeremy whooped and hollered, really only to himself, as his hand grazed the upside of the wave until he finally came out the end of it. He was too busy cheering for himself to notice the other wave that was coming in right behind the last one, and the force of it knocked him off his board and he was a lot closer to the shore now than he had been when he first started on that one big wave. He could feel the squishy yellowy-brown sand under his feet as he staggered up to the shore, only to collapse into it, trying to catch his breath. He was panting hard and the dripping water from his hair was falling into his mouth, leaving the gross salty taste behind. When Jeremy finally rolled over and looked up and saw a familiar face hanging over him. Laughing slightly, Jeremy was the first to comment on his rather grand return to the sand.
“Dude,” he laughed, “That was gnarly.”
