January 31, 2008
Her hands trembled and the nightmares continued. Her friend’s screams of pain and sorrow echoed in her head and it was driving her mad. Celina curled herself up into a ball in the corner of the common room behind an armchair. She had to hide. If not from the disgusted glares from her housemates and the curious wonders from some of the others, than from her own torments. She had pushed Emerald away, and at the moment her cat was meowing nonstop in her Cat Carrier that was bewitched so that the other girls wouldn’t hear Emeralds yowls of loneliness, but still Celina could hear them. They were just like Felicity’s screams….
She curled herself up into a tight ball behind the chair, her knees up to her chest and her head down. Her hands covered her ears as if to stop the memories and her eyes welled with the uncontrollable tears; her sobs were soft but noticeable.
Felicity and Celina hadn’t spoken since then. Every time Celina had seen her, if was from afar and only because she had to eat in order to survive. Celina wasn’t being let to allow herself to starve…she still had friends that were looking over her, even though Celina wondered at time if it was because her brother maybe had spoken to them as well, to protect her.
Where had he been? What had Shaw done to him that made Alfonz give the information to him? The sacred knowledge of the irrational plan…Alfonz….Alfonz….
Classes had been even more distressing. Every class was a reminder, especially with Felicity being in her year. Celina should have stayed away from people just as she had in the past four years of her life. Celina dogdged in and out of people so that her Gryffindor friend wouldn’t see her, so that her stress would be limited, and with the combination of many of the classes into different years, Celina hadn’t found it as difficult as she once thought it would have been. Other than that, Celina had stayed in the library…her nose in a book, studying until her brain was mush. Only few times had she been out with someone, and even then she had clung to them as if they were the only people in the world who would care for her.
It seem that now everything was ruined for the poor Raven girl; friends and school alike. What honors would be bestowed upon a rat? A snitch? What great achievements would she be granted now in order to make her parents proud? And without friends….Celina thanked Merlin that Mike was still on her side, knowing that she was forced into a corner that she couldn’t retract herself from. At least one person didn’t blame her (to her knowledge). So, because of the Deva, Celina lost everything she had worked so hard to gain….because of Felicity’s numbskull plan….Celina Jedynak paid just as much as Felicity….though, with every horrid and angry thought that Celina had like that…she cried more, knowing that she was the only one to truly be blamed for anything, for she should have just stayed invisible.
Alfonz and Celina still kept in contact, probably more now than ever before. The turquoise ribbon though, had never left her hair. Every day she wore it to remind herself that she had some hope left in the unforgiving world she seemed to live in at that moment. Every day her hair was pulled back by the ribbon, and even as she sat behind the armchair and tortured herself more with the memories she couldn’t help but dream of and think about….the ribbon still tied back her hair. Alfonz had told her that as soon as he could, he’d be there with her in his arms. Celina wasn’t sure what that meant, but hoped that it meant that she would be transferring, like he had said to her so many times before. Maybe he was talking her parents into letting her leave Hogwarts. She cried more. What a horrid, but blissful thought that was.
Celina tightened her legs as she heard her housemates walking through out the common room. Some leaving some staying, some not caring to notice the chair pushed out a ways and the sobs of the young Raven. That was better any ways for Celina, and she felt it was just more of what punishment she should have to endure.
Who could just turn their friend in…? Celina had stared directly at both Felicity, and then Shaw….She had cried and begged for it to all stop….but only after she had admitted the plan….Celina Jedynak couldn’t find her protector anywhere then…why wasn’t she strong enough to say……
……nothing……

Drew was planning on making a quick stop to switch out some books from his back pack before heading off to the library for the afternoon. With quidditch cancelled and Felicity insisting on spending most of her time in the Gryffindor common room, the Ravenclaw found he had a lot of spare time on his hands, time he could spend going over the events of the past few weeks, or time he could spend studying. He found that studying during his spare time seemed to decrease the intensity of the nightmares that had been plaguing him lately.
He had seen Celina around, looking miserable and lost. It was hard not to cross paths with her, living in the same house. A part of him was glad she was so upset-- she deserved whatever demons plagued her. But another part, and actually the bigger part remembered his promise to her that he'd always be there no matter what. And while it felt like a betrayal of some sorts to Felicity, it was that part that worried about her, that part that was sure there had to be some sort of reason behind what she had done.
The sobs from various corners were nothing new and on most days, Drew ignored them. A few other times, he might carefully peek towards her hiding place to make sure she wasn't physically hurt or in the danger of becoming so. Today, he went over and sat in the chair she was hiding behind, taking a moment for a long deep breath before actually speaking. "Are you okay?" he asked softly, knowing that it was a stupid question but asking it anyway. Nothing had been okay since New Years.

Jax entered the common room, coming back from one of her classes. It had been as long as she thought it was going to be, and with everything that her mind was fussing over, she was already annoyed before sitting through the mindless class. Some of these new professors had no idea what they were even talking about, and with not being here during the Deva attack, how could they dare try to make everything all better? They had no idea! They didn’t see the horrible sights or hear the crying or the screaming. A bruise on Jax’s head from where a piece of the blown up wall that had hit her head was just then starting to turn a yellowish brown color in order to disappear. The professors had some gull to even think they had the right to speak of anything that had happened in the castle while they were not even there.
Hands shoved in her robes, head down, and grumbling a bit to herself, Jax was ready to just go to bed and forget about all the homework the professors had assigned to them. Getting back to normal…what jerks. Who could concentrate on homework at a time like this? A few more colorful words were muttered under Jax’s breath as she walked toward the stairs to go up to the girl’s dorms. It was then that another sound caught her ears.
At first, the third year thought she was just imagining it. Crying…like there had been during the attacks. Her mind must have been going into a relapse of the events, but as Jax stopped and shut her eyes tightly, the sound didn’t dissolve like she thought it would. It was real. Someone was crying. Looking around, she saw people here and there, but no one crying…it wasn’t until she really started to look for it when she found that an armchair that usually sat against the wall in the corner of the common room was pulled out, and the points of someone’s shoes stuck out just a bit beyond the chair.
Was someone actually hiding behind a chair in the common room to cry? Of all places to do such things. If anything Jax saw this as just someone’s idea of crying for attention. Another person with a lot of guts. Hadn’t enough crying been done? Hadn’t people had enough with the sobbing and the issues?
Drew got to the chair before she did, and asked whoever it was if they were ok. Jax decided that she too, even with how much she hated to admit it, was concerened that someone was actually hurting….It wasn’t until she walked over to see who it was where she was really[/I[ appalled. Not only with what she saw, but with Drew for showing such kindness to an obvious traitor.
Celina Jedynak. Fifth Year. Beautiful, slender….and one of the biggest disgraces that Jax knew. If they were outside, she would have spit on the girl right then and there. Some bravado she had crying in the common room when people had seen what she had done, heard what she had said, and then saw what she didn’t do! She was a coward…a weakling…and she had no idea of anything righteous in Jax’s mind. Jax was outraged by just the sight of her it almost made her want to cry just because of the overwhelming emotions she felt by just looking at the girl. It broke Jax’s heart to realize she had defended such a girl…anymore, Celina Jedynak was nothing to her.
“How….how can you cry?!” Jax’s tone was hushed, but just barely as she looked around the chair and scowled. “It’s over now…can’t you see? How can you cry? It’s not as if you were tortured!” Jax clenched her fist, so badly wanting to slap the older Raven. She had hurt Felicity…and though Jax and Felicity weren’t close, Felicity and her were still friends. She had taken her to the dance, and was not afraid to be seen with her! And Celina crushed her with her words and cowardice. “You almost make it seem like you care….you disgust me…” Jax directed at Drew and Celina both switching her eyes from both of them. She wasn’t about to cry…but she had to admit to herself that she really wanted to.

Celina rocked back and forth in her corner, trying to make the memories stop replaying in her mind. She hadn’t even noticed Drew come over, nor did she realize Jax, but they had. All of the sounds in the room were mixing together, and all Celina wanted to do was run to wherever her brother may have been at that moment and curl up in his arms. Or for that matter, anyone’s arms who still cared for her. At this moment, she would have even found her father’s cold embrace comforting.
Celina shook her head out of just plain disagreement with herself, but conveniently it was right after Drew had spoken. She hadn’t heard it. But she did hear Jax…for some reason her tone and words were just that much more real to her. Maybe it was because she found more reason for them being said…
Celina found herself unworthy of care and comfort, as Drew was trying to do. Though she now looked at the both of them, tears still streaming down her face, she almost wondered why they were both there. Drew looking as if he wanted to help, as he always seemed to look, and Jax, with such fury on her face….Celina was a disgrace as Jax said to her….and all she could do was agree. Her head hanging low, and her eyes dropping to the floor…..
“I…I….” Celina stumbled over her words. She was so sorry it had happened…she had been so afraid. Where were her protectors when she really needed them? Drew wasn’t there…Alfonz was no where she could find him….even Mike, who had said Alfonz told him to look out for her…..people screaming….she begged Shaw….no….
“so….sorry…” she whispered, barely audible….Celina could hear the non existent mews from Emerald….begging to be let free.

"Talk to me about it after Shaw puts you under a Crucio, okay?" Drew shot back at Jax, already feeling like a traitor to Felicity and not needing his team mate to remind him of it. Drew had been in Celina's shoes, forced to rat out a friend. The difference was he had made a different choice, one he wasn't sure why Celina hadn't made. Was it his strong Gryffindor streak everyone claimed he had? He didn't think so. He prefered to think it had been what little logic he had held onto that had prevented him from giving Shaw Ari's name that night.
It had been that bit of Gryffindor in him that had kept him from giving Mike's name instead.
"Celina, you need to stop crying. It's not going to fix anything," he told her, knowing it was easier said than done. It was also freaking out the firsties, but he didn't bother saying that bit.

Jax didn’t care about the curse! If it was her, she would have taken it rather than ratting out her friend. She would have done something….ANYTHING that would have been better that what that sorry excuse for a Ravenclaw had done. Hadn’t she had a brain in that head that she could have used?! “I would have…” Jax growled at the older boy. She could feel moisture start to precipitate in her own eyes. It was out of anger…frustration…pure horror from her own memories of the event. And Drew wasn’t even there! He too, had a lot of gull to be saying anything!
“I would have done anything rather than rat out a friend! I would have taken the curse, I would have told them to eat…” Jax snapped a nasty word, and scoffed at the older boy. Could he not see that Celina’s crying was for attention? She wanted people to think she was the victim in all of this! When really, the real victim was Felicity…couldn’t even Drew understand that?! Not to mention the fact that Celina had uttered the word ‘sorry’ only sickened the young girl more. How could she?
“She was a coward…and she’ll do it again probably, too….I bet she’d do it to any of us...” Jax stated shaking her head, and turning her face away from looking at the older Ravens. Jax truly didn’t understand, but she wasn’t about to say that she wouldn’t do differently what Celina had done. The only kudos that Jax could give Celina at that moment was that she had stabbed her friend in the front, just like a true friend should.

She buried her face in her knees and tried very hard to stop. Celina tried very hard not to listen and agree with all of what the younger girl was saying. She tried, but the more she tried the more she wanted to scream out at Emerald for her consistent mewing that no one else could hear.
Celina had buckled badly under the pressure of having no one there to be her shield like she had had before. She gave in to the will of one she found to be an authority, and though most would find that despicable to even label Shaw as such, Celina didn’t. He was older, a male, and most of all, a reminder of her father whom she respected greatly, but only from her fear of him.
Where had Alfonz been? Why didn’t he do anything?
She held her legs tighter, curling up more in a ball. Celina couldn’t stand the yelling or the bickering, the screams in her mind, the torment she was putting herself through, and though her legs quieted her sobs, they were still there. She had been so afraid…she hadn’t known anything else to do when she couldn't find anyone to help her.

"I know you would have," Drew answered Jax evenly, "But not everyone is as strong as you or I are." He stated this with no shame, neither for calling himself strong or for indirectly calling Celina weak. And yes, he was fully confident that had it been Jax threatened, the girl would have endured whatever curse was thrown at her instead of selling out a friend.
What puzzled him the most was why Celina had done it, from what Drew had heard, with very little threat at all. The story that came to him was that the Ravenclaw had just folded without a fight, willing to sacrifice her so-called best friend without argument. Drew knew she was a coward, hiding behind her brother's bullying, but was she really that big of a wuss?
Drew wanted answers and he didn't think that throwing accusations and names at Celina would get them.
"Celina, you need to cut it out," he said firmly, again knowing that it wouldn't be easy, but the girl was giving in to her own self-destruction and he couldn't let that happen.

If this had been at any other time, Jax would have been overly grateful for Drew’s compliment on her own strength. She would have smiled, and puffed out her chest and probably given a smart remark, but this time was different. He was still insisting on helping the other Raven, and it almost hurt Jax to see him do it. Why wasn’t he just leaving her to rot in her own self-misery? Wouldn’t that be a punishment…to let her delve into an abyss where she more than likely belonged?
“Why do you care?” Jax hissed. She knew he was Prefect, but he was also human. Didn’t he hate her for what she had done? Or was the guy one of those ‘I have to see it before I’ll believe it’ kind of guys? What a loser… Jax thought to herself, trying not to lose respect for her teammate. “I don’t understand you, Thornton…the girl’s worthless,” and with that Jax turned, her bag swinging on her shoulder as she went to walk away. Now she wanted to cry…but she wouldn’t allow herself that privilege. She wouldn’t cry out for unneeded attention…

Celina heard Drew’s voice and her body tensed. He was upset with her, she thought, and could hear it in his voice. She had to stop…she had to mind her authorities…Drew, above all else, was a Prefect in her house and she had to do as he said. Willing herself, her sobbing slowed until it could no longer be heard as clearly. She inhaled a few breaths of air as she lifted her head off of her knees, still looking towards the ground. She couldn’t…wouldn’t make eye contact. Not with Drew….not anyone.
And that wasn’t the only reason she didn’t look up, for Jax was walking away now. Annoyed, disgusted, and it was obvious that not even the younger raven cared. Celina felt her insides wrench as she wished so badly she had done something different as the two other Ravens were talking about. She wished she could have taken what Felicity did…she wished she had thought that an option.
Celina leaned her head against the chair, and closed her eyes. Behind her lids was everything she feared and more…her face squinched up to cry again, but she tried to refrain and instead she allowed a tear to fall. She couldn’t take how her insides felt as if they were painfully decaying within her. And in all of this thought, and confusion, Celina could see the face of Felicity….and Emerald….both of which now suffered because of Celina. Both of which, whom deserved better.

"The girl's a Ravenclaw," Drew spat back, mentally adding Jax to the list of Ravengirls he had pissed off. By his count, he figured he had gotten all of them now. And while he could understand Jax's anger, he wasn't sure why her sense of house pride had grown so pale. Didn't she see that by letting Celina deteriorate, Jax was doing the very same thing Celina had.
Drew turned back to Celina, a little disgusted by not only what she had done, but also by what she had become since then.
"Where's Emerald?" Drew asked, knowing he hadn't seen the cat since he had left the Hall by portkey that night. The fact that the cat was not in her usual places in Celina's clutches was distrubing. His guess was Celina had her locked up somewhere which probably wasn't good for either girl or cat.

Celina wondered to herself if being a Ravenclaw even mattered anymore…she had become more Deva than anything else, and between the nightmares of Felicity’s screams, she heard Shaw’s voice over and over again. Just the night before did she yet again see the man’s face and how terrifying it was. It was so angry, and she….so disobedient. In her dream he had told her what she was…pureblood…Deva…and to go to him with her own promise to be his serving follower.
She had woken up that morning in a cold sweat like no one would have believed, and she cried in the shower so that no one would hear. Had her life really gone down that far so fast? Where was the girl she used to remember? Where was the girl she thought she was? “Emerald?” she whispered, and then tears started flowing more freely down her face once more. Celina shook her head, and only gestured with her hand that she was upstairs in the girl’s dorm.

The tears and the vague gesture didn't really answer Drew's question but only made him more concerned for the cat. A month ago, he wouldn't dream that Celina might injure Emerald in any way, but then again a month ago he didn't think the girl would rat out her best friend. Her reaction to his simple question did not sit well with him at all.
"Is Emerald okay?" Drew asked, setting his jaw and already thinking he would have to climb the slide up to the girls dorm to make sure for himself.

Celina opened her eyes, and thought about the question her tears slowed their decent down her face. Was Emerald Ok? Did Drew mean in her care? Or in the Carrier that she was locked in with the soundproof spell so no one would hear her mews? Celina looked at the ceiling off the common room, as if to look through it to see her cat. Celina could hear the cat’s callings. She was probably hungry, though she had had food already that day….but she may have been thirsty. There was no room for water in the carrier….Celina had tried. Emerald had just spilled it all over the place. Silly kitty.
Looking back at Drew, Celina looked lost. Her pale face was only paler than usual but she shrugged and spoke silently. “She may be thirsty…” Maybe Celina should have gone and checked, but she couldn’t bring herself to move or even say much for that matter. Celina looked around again and then back up to the ceiling. Maybe Drew would take care of her….she always did like him…
“I can’t…can’t…take care…” Celina stumbled over the hard words. It was as if she were trying to swallow a boulder. She couldn’t take care of her best friend, she had almost gotten her best human friend killed, even though Alfonz kept insisting it was Felicity’s own doing, and so another tear fell from her face and she just let out a big sigh. “She mews a lot when she’s upset…and she eats more than she probably should…she likes her hair brushed…and to sleep at the end of the bed. If you tell her to stay, she will….sometimes…”
Reaching into her pocket absent mindedly Celina pulled out a golden key, the top formed in the shape of a cat’s head. She held it out to Drew hesitantly and closed her eyes and looked away. “I can’t…” she whispered again.

Drew took the key, relieved to hear that the cat was still safe. He was watching out for Juni while Ari was laid up at Mungos and he didn't think it would be too hard to keep track of Emerald too, at least until Celina was ready to take her back.
And he was sure Celina would eventually take the cat back. His temporary custody of Emerald was only to keep the cat healthy and hopefully happy while Celina straightened herself out.
"She's in her case?" he asked, figuring that was the meaning behind the cat shaped key. He'd want answers for why she felt the need to lock up Emerald as well. "You'll have to get her for me," Drew told her, knowing that he could get the cat himself, but it would be easier if she did it. He was also pretty sure Emerald wouldn't like the slide down.
