"Why?" Drew asked her, pulling away from her just enough to give his nose a swipe with a mittened hand. When he was done, he leaned back into her but still didn't hug her back. "I'm okay."

"I don't know," Arianna answered truthfully. She pulled back enough to look Drew in the eyes. "You're sure you're okay?"

Drew nodded and sniffed again... dang cold...
"Why wouldn't I be okay?" he asked, not looking up at her but playing with the cuffs of his pants instead.

Arianna shrugged yet again. Reaching into her pocket, she produced folded napkin. Pulling it's contents out (just a few cookies), she handed the napkin to Drew.

Drew frowned at the offered napkin and looked at the cookies instead. If he HAD been feeling upset, he wasn't sure what an empty napkin would do other than taunt him that he didn't have a girlfriend OR cookies at this point. If he HAD been feeling upset, cookies would do a heck of a better job at helping him than an empty napkin would.

"For your nose," Arianna explained, waving the napkin at Drew. She had heard his sniffles and thought he might want to take care of that first. "Then you can have a cookie."

"I don't have the sniffles," Drew grumbled, sniffing again without realizing it. "And I don't need a cookie either. I'm not a little kid you know. I dont' need a stupid cookie to make me feel better.... If I was feeling bad to begin with."

It was now Arianna's turn to frown. She watched Drew for a long moment before wrapping the cookies and tucking them back in her pocket. Pulling herself onto the rock beside Drew, she set her hands in her lap and stared down at her feet.

Drew swiped at his nose again but said noting for a while, prefering to stare at the ground below him instead. "I thought you were trying to snowboard," he finally grumbled, keeping his eyes on the snow.

"I can't," Arianna claimed. She bit her lip and turned to Drew. "I have a feeling that a friend needs me and...well, I don't know what to do."

"Well, how am I supposed to help any with that?" Drew answered roughly, not getting the implications at all. All he was thinking about was why everyone expected him to have all of the answers to everything.

Arianna scratched her head. She didn't know how to tell Drew that she knew something was wrong without him getting even more upset. She had to think it over before speaking again.
"By telling me what you need," the girl finally said in a quiet voice. "And ear to listen? Another hug?"

"Nothing. I don't need anything," Drew mumbled, flicking a bit of snow off of the rock they were sitting on. "You can go back to snowboarding, or sledding or whatever you were doing."

"Okay," Arianna's head jerked up and down, though she didn't move from the rock.

Drew stayed where he was as well, sitting silently and continuing with his snow flicking. He was perfectly happy freezing his butt off on the rock. If she wanted to join him, that was her business.
