Adjusting the makeshift straps connecting her feet to the shield beneath her feet (she would be sure to get it back to the armory before anyone noticed), Arianna eyed the bottom of the hill nervously. It took a moment to gather up enough guts to move further down the edge until gravity took care of the rest, pulling her down the slope. She was uneasy with the whole standing-up position and it showed. It certainly didn't help her mid-way down the hill, when she fell on her behind and half tumbled, half slid the rest of the way down, coming to a stop at someone's feet.

"You should have just swiped my snow board," Drew called out from the rock he was sitting on. Why she hadn't, he didn't know. She usually had no problem snagging his stuff.
Of course, that was one of the reasons he and Hiro had booby-trapped the boy's dorms...

"And risked a blue face?" Arianna questioned, shoving herself up from the snow-covered ground. She was already reaching down to loosen the straps so she could haul the shield back up the hill to try again. "I don't think so."

"Of course, you could have tried something new and exciting and asked to borrow it too," Drew suggested, just a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"I didn't want to bother you, though," Arianna claimed, slightly taken aback by Drew's tone. He'd never seemed to have a problem with her borrowing his stuff. Though that might've been his reason for putting up the security system. "You would have had to trek all the way up to your room to get it for me and then you'd have to show me how it works."

"It's a snow board. How hard can it be to figure it out?" he asked, with a shrug. "You strap it on and go. Nothing too it." Of course, he knew there was more than that, but really, it would be a lot easier to use than the thing she was using.

Arianna didn't answer as she hiked back up to the top of the hill. When she reached the top, she plopped down in the snow and stared at the improvised snow board in front of her. She felt like Drew had just told her that she was too stupid to figure out how the real things worked and felt no desire to try again.

Drew sat on his rock, his jacket pulled tightly around him and his knees drawn to his chest, as he watched Ari climb up the hill to give it another try. He would have gotten the snowboard if she asked for it (he would have grumbled, but he would have done it), but he wasn't going to offer it again unless she asked.

Arianna sat at the top of the hill for a long moment, pushing the shield back and forth in front of her. Once it nearly slipped from her hands, but she was able to catch it before it went down. As she pulled it back up, she caught sight of Drew down at the bottom. Something about the way he sat on the rock seemed a bit odd and, though she was certain nothing was wrong, Arianna thought he looked as though he needed a hug.
With a quiet sigh, Arianna pulled herself onto the shield and slid once more down the hill. When she reached the bottom, the girl pulled herself up and wandered over to Drew.
"You okay?" she questioned, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I would have asked. Really. I just....I don't know. I just didn't think about it."

"I would have let you borrow it," Drew told her, not bothering to answer her first question. "That thing isn't going to hold you very long. The straps are made for hands, not feet you know."

"I know," Arianna shrugged. "I thought I would try it, though. It started out as a sled, but when I got to the top of the hill I thought I'd see if I could do it."

"It works better as a sled," Drwe answered, grumbling a bit as he pulled his knit cap tighter over his ears. Of course, it wasn't the same exact shield he and Alhana had used the previous winter, but it was similar enough for him to know it would work well.

"I guess it does," Arianna replied in agreement. She shuffled her feet a bit, a slight frown on her lips. Turning to him again, she started to repeat what she had said earlier, but found she couldn't do it. Instead, she muttered, "Come 'ere." And wrapped her arms around him.

"What?" he asked softly, accepting the hug but not returning it. The cold he had caught from staying up with Lily must have been acting up again because he gave a long and loud sniff, but said nothing more.

"You look like you need a hug," Arianna replied, shrugging though she still held onto the boy.
