Beni nodded and listened patiently to his story. He sounded open about it, but she wondered if the wound was still fresh. Still, he was overall chipper, she concluded from moments before when they were skipping and singing. "So he's much better now?" She asked. "You know, if he's in London and not Mungos anymore."

"He's in London because of St. Mungo's," Kellen answered. "There's this medicine he has to take that he gets there. Normally it doesn't work for Muggles, but--all right, I know this is complicated, but this is more or less the whole story."
He took a deep breath, and began. "When Kearney got Leukemia, he needed a bone marrow transplant. They said blood relatives usually had the same blood types so I wanted to donate. That's when our parents told us, all three of us, that we were adopted. Well, Ken an I had grown up as brothers. His idea was that we should become blood brothers--like, we both cut out hands and shook them, and mixed blood, you know? Like they do in movies? Normally your body kills off alien cells, but since his white blood cell count was so low, I guess the little bit of magic blood stayed with him. I know, it's all sciency and whatnot, but anyway, he can't do any magic or anything, but magical things work on him. Does that make any sense?" Kellen asked, when he realized he'd just gone through an entire explanation more than he'd really given anyone else.

(Sorry, I've got the worst HP geography this side of HR ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ) Beni nodded, glad that she could get through the entire explanation without mentally wandering off-- a habit she seemed to have when it came to classes or even stories. "That's bloody brill for him, then. He's got the best docs working with him," she was glad that his brother was doing well. "So he's got a bit of magical blood in him, right? So is he immune to those anti-muggle spells? You know, if he came here, would he see the castle like all of us do?" She remembered that muggles couldn't see the castle as witches and wizards did. All they saw were ruins and a warning sign.

Kellen thought for a moment. "I'm really not sure," he said finally. "I think probably not," he decided. "I mean, he can find his way to the Leaky Cauldron, because he knows it's there, but he can't go into Diagon Alley or anything without a wizard or witch with him. He's maybe kind of like a squib--he's got an awareness of magic around him, like he can kind of feel it, but he still can't see it. I think. I'm not really sure."

"That's surely a start," Beni said with another nod. "Maybe he can visit the castle one day. Get a whiff at what your cookin' from day to day." She wished she had siblings at that point. If she did, she would bring them along everywhere like a safety blanket. "Wow... blood brothers," she lamely said, "You only hear about that stuff in books."

Kellen grinned. "I know. We thought we were being all brave and heroic when we did it, too. You know, as nine and eleven year olds. Like it had some great spiritual meaning -- we didn't realize until last year that it actually did. I'd nearly forgotten about it, in truth."

"Blood brothers," Beni said again, trying to imagine how it would be in Kellen's shoes. "That is so brilliant." She realized how much she was repeating herself and laughed. "I'm sorry there, mate. It's just nice listening to people talk about their siblings. I'm not the jealous type, so I'm always wanting to hear everything and anything about fam life."

Kellen nodded. "People usually aren't that excited about it," he admitted. "I mean, some people ask what it's like living with Muggles and all, but most people don't care any more than that. It's kind of refreshing, you know?"

"I wish I knew," Beni said said with a minute wonder, trying to comprehend how it really felt, but just couldn't. "I've got two mums, you see, and people ask the same questions: 'How were you born?' 'Do people look at you weird?' 'Are you gay, too?'
My mums always taught me to roll with the punches and let them bore themselves out of the conversation. But no one really ever asks me what they do for a living. They either try to back out the convo or just ask the most ridiculous questions."

Kellen smirked. "Is that my cue? What do your mums do, then?" Part of him did want to ask other questions--did she have a dad? What was it like? He lived in a pretty conservative town, and didn't really know anyone with gay parents. Obviously, though, that would have been rude and he had no intention of being rude.

Beni grinned a little, wondering if she had crushed most of his hopes for asking more questions. "Sherylyn works in a healthful herbs store, and Ana's a chief architect of a well known company," she said, feeling great to finall say those things.
Though, she was suddenly unused to this new method of conversing. Although all she heard where the questions that she talked about, she still had to admit that she liked being asked questions."You can still ask me more questions, you know. Just none of that 'are you gay' bollocks. It drives me nutso."

"Not a word on that, I promise," Kellen said, before smirking mischeviously. "Though if you are, you should tell that old bloke in the painting. You'll break his heart, but it's better to know, right?" he said lightly.

"Aww..." Beni said with a funny grin and winked back at the portrait before saying, "He's not going to have any problems with that. I'm as straight as a ruler." She nodded and raised her arms up high and straight, making a visual of her preference.
