He had a feeling that would be the answer. He had actually counted on it.
"You know it bothers me and you still wear it," he said slowly. There was no way she could possibly be more bothered by his hugging than he was by that stupid locket. "I hate that thing around your neck, but I tell myself to get over it because you said you're just friends with Lucas and it doesn't mean what I think it means... and I believe you."
He turned to look back at her, his eyes rimmed in red and his hair sticking up at odd angles. "I won't go near Celina anymore." Celina probably wouldn't care that he suddenly started avoiding her, but on the off chance that she did, he was more concerned about what Felicity needed.

Yes, she knew it did, but she'd also explained, as he said, it didn't mean what he thought it did. But was it the same? Slow realization dawned, and she thought she might, possibly, understand what he meant.
Biting her lip hard, she wasn't sure what to say. Did it bother him that much? At first she thought it was just a little bit, but he was now saying he hated it, could he really dislike such a little thing so much?
In response to him, she just shook her head. The blonde didn't want him to avoid Celina, that would be worse in the end. And it would be hard for him to do so, being the girl was her best friend, she just didn't want him to put his arms around her. "No, please don't do that," she pleaded, barely above a whisper. "I know you don't mean anything, I do...I just...I don't like it when you have your arms around her."
It made her jealous, simple as that, for whatever reason, deep inside, she got a horrible feeling about it. And if he stayed away from Celina, that would mean she should stay away from Lucas, wouldn't it? Being Celina was in his House, it would be even harder for him to do, and truthfully, she didn't want him to stay away from her.
"Do you not want me to wear this anymore?" she questioned about the locket. If he didn't, she wouldn't, she may not like it, but she wouldn't wear it again.

"And I don't like some other guy's locket around your neck," he grumbled. In all honesty he saw no reason why she felt the need to wear the bloody thing. But no, he wouldn't ask her to give it up. The only reason he saw for doing that was to protect his own ego.
"I couldn't do that to you," he said, turning away from her again. "Tell you to hurt a friend... give up something you like so much. I think you'd end up just being more mad at me in the end."

Felicity only bothered with really wearing it because of Sammy's photograph, otherwise, she probably would've worn it the day Lucas gave it to her to appease him, and then wouldn't have worn it again. And it wasn't as though she had any other locket to wear.
Once more, he turned away from her, and she couldn't help but be angry at his words. She wasn't asking him to hurt Celina, she just didn't want him to hold her, and if that hurt her friend, then did that mean more than what he was telling her? No, she knew that wasn't true, but it didn't work right in her mind. And did he really like having his arms around Celina so much, that he wanted Felicity to tell him he could? That tidbit bothered her most.
Perhaps she wasn't fully understanding what he meant, but to her, it seemed as though he was requesting she ask him not to give up putting his arms around Celina, and if she didn't he was going to be mad at her. Again what her dad and Jacob had said to her rang through her ears, but she wasn't going to believe it, she couldn't.
"Are you really going to be mad at me if I ask you to not put your arms around her?" she asked, it was usually better to get clarification. "And you like having your arms around Celina so much, you don't want me to ask you to stop?" That was what bothered her. Having Lucas' locket around her neck wasn't the same as having his arms around her. If Drew wore a locket Celina had given him, she didn't think she'd have a problem with it, it wasn't him with his arms around her.
Felicity didn't understand that in the least. She wasn't asking him to stay away from Celina, she just didn't want his arms around her, or at least not as often as it seemed he did.
"I can't ask you to stay away from her Drew, I don't want you to stay away from her, I wouldn't ever ask you to stay away from someone you like," she continued. If it really bothered him that much, having Lucas' necklace around him, she'd have to deal, too. "If you want your arms around her that badly, then fine, I'll find a way to deal with it." If she had to, she'd stay away from the Ravengirl herself. Another thing she didn't understand was, how he could possibly want his arms around Celina that badly, and yet tell her he liked her as much as he claimed to.

"It's not even like that and you know it," Drew said, still getting the impression that she thought it was all more than what it was. "Because if I see a friend who's hurt or upset or scared or in danger, I'm going to want to do something about it... and the first thing that happens is I usually put my arms around her. It's barely even a concious decision. It just happens." It was a stupid argument, overused by guys who actually were cheating on their girls... but in this case it was true.
What did it matter anyway? Celina had made it clear she didn't need his friendship. "I said I wouldn't go near her. I don't know what else you want me to do. It's all pointless anyway since she hates my guts, right? Should be easy enough to do."

It just happens. It just happened that he opened his arms to Celina, that he pulled her into him; the look on Celina's face wasn't any of the descriptions he'd made, and in danger? They were all in danger.
And how could he not know what she wanted him to do? She did not want him to stay away from Celina, she just didn't want his arms around her, how hard was that to understand? And again, if he felt the need to stay away from her to complete her request...she didn't even want to think about it.
"Celina doesn't hate you," she defended in a low whisper, perhaps disliked sometimes, but the girl didn't hate him. In fact, she admired him greatly at times, she just found the boy to be frustrating, among other things.
Really, again, she didn't know what to say. For whatever reason, he didn't understand what she wanted, or felt he couldn't complete her request. And in so claiming he was going to stay away from Celina, to her it also meant she was to stay away from Lucas. Their only interaction she thought to be possible would be that of articles for the paper when it came right down to it. But on top of staying away from him, the necklace would have to go, as well.

"So this is her way of saying thanks for trying to keep her safe, right?" Drew answered, turning back to Felicity to show her the angry nail marks on the back of his hand. He was also getting a nice smattering of bruises up his arm from where she had kicked him.
It was all just idiocy on his part, he knew that now. All of Celina's talk about friendship had just been meaningless words, said to get whatever it was that she wanted from him. In this case it had been some sort of safe passage to the doorway. Like so may other girls, she had just used him. So he'd leave her alone from now on and then everyone would be happy.

Upon seeing his hand, she frowned. When had Celina done that? Presumably of course, it must have been when he was holding her ankle, but really, if Celina had to go to the bathroom that badly, it must have been bad.
"She wanted you to let go Drew, she asked you to and you wouldn't let her go. All she wanted was to go to the bathroom," she replied. And why did he feel it was necessary to enforce a physical aspect to keep the girl safe? "Why do you think you needed to latch onto her to keep her safe? You're not doing that to anyone else."
The Ravenclaw hadn't physically held onto any other person in that hall, hadn't decided anyone else was important enough to need to be kept that safe. Why Celina? Again, she couldn't help but think of previous thoughts, which merely made her put her forehead to her knees to somewhat hide her tears.

"Doesn't matter," Drew mumbled, turning away again. She thought he was cheating on her with her best friend of all people and he really didn't understand why. And if he didn't understand why, he really didn't know how to fix it. All he knew was that this was a break-upable offence. Three weeks and he was going to lose his girlfriend over something he didn't even do.
"I said I wouldn't go near her anymore. I don't know what else you want me to do," he finished, his hands in his hair as he rested his elbows on his knees. "Celina and I aren't friends anymore. I don't think we ever really were so it doesn't matter."

It didn't matter why he latched onto her, it didn't matter why he didn't feel the need to keep anyone else safe in such a way? He couldn't even give her a reason why, and that did nothing to settle her feelings about the situation. Why couldn't he give her some reason why it didn't matter?
What else she wanted him to do? Felicity hadn't requested he stay away from Celina, she just didn't want his arms around her, and he couldn't even begin to comply over such a little request without saying he wasn't going to go near her again. And what made it all worse, was he couldn't even look at her while saying it. He had to turn away from her, and that hurt.
"If that's what you want, then fine," she clearly said, turning away from him. If he didn't want to go near Celina again, it was his choice, not her request. What she wanted was to have him just say he wouldn't put his arms around her friend, to have him understand how she felt when he did have his arms around Celina. What she wanted was for him to hold her and tell her he understood.

Yup. She was breaking up with him... that was painfully clear. And there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. He had tried to explain but everything he said just ended up making things worse. It was the story of his life. Why did he even bother trying?
"All I want is for you not to be mad at me," he said, wishing it were all that simple.

"I don't want to be mad at you, in fact I'm not mad at you," she tried to explain. "I just don't understand why I'm feeling the way I am, just in general. I've never felt this way before, and I don't like it, and it's worse at certain times."
Was it still possible that he could feel such a way about the locket that she did with his arms around Celina?
"Drew, I don't like not understanding things, and I really don't like it when we're fighting. I don't want to fight with you, I don't want to feel the way I do sometimes, but can I really help it?" There were a lot of girls that liked him, she knew that, and she also knew he wouldn't act on something they might do. "I trust you Drew, I just don't trust the way I feel. I'm afraid I'm going to do something, or say something when I feel that way, and you're going to hate me for it."
That was one thing she knew she feared lately, making him not like her anymore. Gently, she reached out and touched his arm, wishing more than anything he would hold her. "I'm sorry if I did something, but I'm not mad at you, I don't think I could ever really be mad at you."

"I just don't see what I did," Drew answered softly, tensing when she touched him, but not shrugging her hand off. "Celina's like a sister. That's all it is. We're just friends... or at least I thought we were... If you thought someone you cared about like that was in danger, what would you do?" he asked.
"But if it bugs you that much, I won't do it." Staying away from the other Ravenclaw should be easy enough now that he understood where Celina and he stood with one another.

Pulling her hand away from him quickly, she wasn't entirely sure if he even wanted her touch him, not with the way he tensed. What he did was make her feel the way she did, it wasn't on purpose, she was sure, but she didn't like feeling that way and she didn't want to feel that way.
And they were just friends, she knew that too, but it didn't ease her mind about it any. It was the same thing she'd told him about Lucas though, Felicity and Lucas were just friends, but that didn't make her any less jealous about holding her friend. And the locket probably didn't make him feel any less of what he did either, if he felt the same thing.
But she didn't understand what he meant about danger. They were all in danger, and yet he had chosen to pull Celina closer, not anyone else. What would she do if someone she cared about was in danger like that? She wouldn't be putting her arms around them, that was for sure. What did putting your arms around someone really do for them? "I don't know what I'd do."
It was the only answer she could give, but she very well knew that when everyone in the Hall was in danger, she wasn't going to chose one person and put her arms around them to protect them. Felicity hadn't paid attention to exactly how close the one faceless person had gotten to her friend, she'd merely seen it, and then what Drew had done. How did that put her in more danger than anyone else? Because he'd demanded her wand from her? Someone had done that to Corey, and no one had pulled Corey into their arms.
"Drew..." she trailed off, not sure how to say what she wanted to without getting him even more upset with her. But there was something she wanted to do, she needed to do, it would make her feel slightly better, no matter how he reacted. Carefully, she moved about and climbed into his lap, as uncomfortable as it already was under the table, she needed to be near him like that.
Leaning into him, she placed one arm around him and the other on his chest. "All I really want is for you to be happy, I don't want you to stay away from Celina, and even if I don't like it when you hold her, I'll deal with it. Celina doesn't hate you, and I don't want you to not like her because of me." That how Felicity felt about it, if Drew decided not to like Celina anymore, it would be her fault. And Celina had told her she hadn't really had any friends before that year, would it be fair for her to lose one because of her? No.

"You mean to tell me, if a man came up... up behind Cherry... whispered in her ear... caressed her hair... you don't know what you'd do?" He couldn't believe that. Even if it were true that she didn't know, she had to understand that he couldn't just sit there and let it happen. Would she really want him to do that to Celina?
She crawled in his lap and he was angry enough to push her out again, but he just couldn't do it. He needed her there and he hadn't realized how much until that very moment. He was scared and worried and he didn't know what to do. All he knew was he didn't want Felicity angry at him, he needed her not to be angry at him, and he really didn't want to lose it there under the Gryffindor table.
