The classroom looked odd to him with the desks all lined up in rows. He had been in this particular room more than any other and was used to seeing the tables and chairs cleared and those big purple mats laid out on the floor.
But this was going to be one of those boring shut-up-an-listen types of lessons. The desks were all lined up neatly and the chairs pushed in underneath. He had debated taking the class down to the lake as Raynor had done when she taught it, but she had quickly talked him into this arrangement, probably invisioning him drowning half the second years.
No matter. He was supposed to start them on dark creatures, and pretty cool dark creature at that. On the table was a rather large tank filled with murky lake water. Every so often a pale, devilish looking creature would peer out and bar it's teeth at the empty classroom.
And next to the tank sat Drew, his long legs kicking out a beat to the song he was humming and one arm in the tank, teasing the poor creature.

With Raynor of course sulking miserably behind her office door, or, wherever the school held her quarters Lianna had figured they'd have some sort of a substitute, or she would find a hospital wing bed in here and Raynor laying it, the latter of which she doubted. What she didn't expect was who their 'Professor' actually was.
Upon entering the room the girl paused at the doorway and then looked over her shoulder at the door. Right room, but this didn't make sense. For starters there were desks, Raynor hated desks, then there was the other point. The only other person in the room was Drew.
"Drew?" She questioned, her curiosity clearly perked. She couldn't picture Raynor allowing a student to teach especially with the Ministry all over the place. It didn't make logical sense to her at all. But, at least no desks meant no wand work which meant no extremely embarassing situations. Score!
Never the less, while her curiosity was at a severely dangerous high she took a seat. Aside from Drew being their apparent professor and there being no wand work, no one else was here, which made her wonder if everyone shirked off since Raynor wasn't going to be there.

"Little Lianna..." Drew greeted the young Hufflepuff with a wide grin. She was most likely the only one of the second years he actually knew. With any luck the rest of them would be as cool.
"So where's everyone else? I want to get this puppy on the road," he told her.

DADA looked to be a pretty interesting course, as far as Emily could tell. What you learned was actually useful just in case you got into a bad situation. Emily strolled down the corridor to the classroom as she put her hair up in a pony tail.
Emily walked into the classroom cheerfully and took a seat next to a girl whom she had sat next to in Transfiguration. "Where's the Professor?" she asked when she looked around and spotted another person. A boy, too old to be in their class.
Emily opened her mouth to say something but then closed it with a confused took on her face. Her cheeks grew a light shade of pink when she realized this boy was the professor. She smiled awkwardly as looked around trying not to make eye contact with this 'professor.'

"You're looking at him," Drew answered back with a shrug and for a moment he toyed with the idea of making them call him 'Professor'. Professor Thornton... it kind of had a nice ring to it actually.
He pushed the thought aside and clarified for the girls. "Sort of. I'm kind of the teacher's aide while Raynor is recooperating. She should be back in a few weeks."

"Oh er... That explains it I guess, uh... teacher's aide professor man sir. I hope he's O.K. with whatever he's recooperating form." She looked back at the teacher's aide/professor and once again smiled uneasily.
A Professor trusting a student to teach a class? Emily had never heard of such a thing. Maybe they are running low on substitutes, she thought.
So far Emily's year hadn't been running so smoothly, and if this was a sign of what was to come she probably would leave with a few bumps and bruises. Yet she seemed to be a bit more talkative. Well, talking at all was more talkative for her. She was very shy around her peers and had no idea why she was put in Gryffindor to begin with.

Drew gave a blank look at Lianna before turning back to the Gryffindor. "I did say Professor Raynor asked me to take over while SHE took some time off," he said, wondering why a second year didn't know who the Deputy was. Maybe she was new. "Professor Raynor just had a baby? She was the one being carried out of the Sorting Feast?" Maybe that would clarify it. {actually, in college, it's quite common to have an older student take over a lower level class for a professor ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) }

Little Lianna... The words rang in her head for a long moment before she realized he'd actually said them, with a grin. Drew and grins were never good in the same moment. Or, not from what she'd heard. From what she'd seen, they were alright. But, Drew, and teaching, that just didn't compute.
"Drew everyone's little to you!" She countered to the over six foot tall boy. she barely reached five foot at the moment which made her statement very much in the right. During her thinking the Gryffindor girl from Transfiguration entered, and asked some rather stupidly annoying and obvious questions that the second year didn't feel compelled to answer.
However Drew did and it appeared that because of all the questions and comments from the other girl's mind, that her comment fell on pre-occupied ears. "Drew...erm...how is she, do you know?" Lianna questioned concerned and curious at the same time. She respected the Deputy, not because of her title but because she was an alright Professor, the least she could say for some of the others she had had last year. The woman was a good role model, and had a class she looked forward to. To not have the woman here even for a couple weeks or so was a blow to her morale.

Emily's cheeks went red again as she just called professor Raynor a he. "Oh, sorry. Um... I guess I missed that bit. " Just don't talk... EVER! She told herself deciding it was the time to shut up before she said something else completely wrong. She just wanted to leave and not come back until the Professor was teaching again. It's not her fault she hasn't met every Professor. Emily put her elbows on her desk and just starred at her watch waiting for the class to end. All she wanted to do was go back to the dormitory and write home. She had never felt comfortable away for so long, and DADA wasn't exactly making her day any more cheery. ((Emily's a third year, not a second year. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ))

{then all the more reason you should know her, right? ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) } Drew winked at the Gryffindor girl to let her know he was just givng her a hard time as he answered Lianna. "Professor Raynor. SHE's okay. And the baby... okay too. The nurse just wanted her to take it easy for a bit so... you guys are stuck with me I guess."

(SWEET!!! ;D) Like all the other students in Hogwarts, Abigail was wondering who the DADA substitute would be. Clad in her robes and uniform (a little messy at the moment however with tie loose and shirt tails tucked out), the Huffle rounded the corner and strode down the corridor with her bag slung over her shoulder and brown locks pulled back into a ponytail. Her wand was stuck safely in her pocket as she walked into the classroom right as Drew finished his last statement. "You're our professor?! WICKED!" Abby grinned at the fifth year as she skipped in and took a seat next to Lianna (like she did in every other class). Although she had only met the boy once before, he was a nice guy and hopefully wouldn't be too hard on the poor second years. She dropped her bag to the floor and leaned back, her eyes surveying the classroom. Oh joy, desks and chairs. The second year inwardly groaned at this for it usually meant note-taking, and her grin faded somewhat into a wide smile as her gaze finally dropped onto the tank at the front of the room and Drew's arm which layed inside. "Er, professor," she chimed. "We aren't learning about grindylows today, are we?" Abby read a small excerpt about those creatures in one of the magical creature books in the library and understood they lived in lake water. Her eyebrows rose as she forced her eyes away from the swirling water and back at the Ravenclaw. "Hey Li-Li," she quipped quietly. (Oh awesome! I didn't even look at the curriculum before and I got it right! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) )

Having somehow mysteriously claimed a seat within her last two posts, Lianna smiled when Abi entered. It was just another good point to add to the list, she feared the girl wouldn't show with the notion of a substitute. Lianna had figured no one could sub for Raynor and be good at it and she herself had actually contemplated not coming, but figured Raynor would find out who didn't show by some form or another. That wouldn't be cool.
But both her fear of finding out, and the possbaility their substitute could have word on her condition had won over in her mind. When Abi questioned about the lesson Lianna blinked, only now noticing the tank next to the fifth year. "Don't get your hand bit..." She murmured to herself, fighting the urge to grin.

Drew grinned back at the girls and he pulled his hand out of the tank to show them the creature clinging to it by a death grip. The little beast looked ready to clammer up Drew's arm and rip his eyes out... and probably would have if it was able to breath outside of the water. Drew dunked his arm back in and pulled it out again, this time creature-free. The demon must have given up for the time being and could be seen resting against the walls of the tank.
"Bingo. Give the lady a cookie," he answered Abby, glad to see another familiar face in the room. "Grindylows. Nasty little buggers, but easy enough if you know how."
Of course, he was forgetting something. He forgot to go over the whole beginning part in his anticipation of the good stuff.
"So you guys have all had at least a year of Defence Against the Dark Arts. We'll start with what that means before talking about Dark Creatures," he told them.
{Official start of class here. Not sure if I have the power to give and take points, but I will be making recommendations to Raynor. So for now, a cookie is the best I can offer. Abby, you can collect after class ;D }

(Again, SWEET! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ) Glad that Lianna decided to take a seat without writing it ( ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ), Abby flinched as Drew pulled the ugly creature out of the water. Her face was contorted into a grimace as it slipped back into the water, and it took a lot of effort to keep her gaze off the disturbing thing crawling in the tank. "Cookies, that's a new one, but I'm not complaining," the second year said with a shrug. Abby wanted to ask Drew how long he would be substituting for but couldn't get anything else in before he started the lesson. The definition of DADA--sounded like it was time for ink and parchment. Abby pulled out her supplies and dipped the tip of her black-feather quill into the ink bottle, her eyes trained upon their new proffy.

Emily didn't feel any better when he winked at her. She didn't find it all that funny. Instead she gave a weak forced smile which quickly turned to a frown the second she took her eyes off him.
When another girl joined them she didn't bother to talk or watch where she was sitting, she just starred at the door wishing someone she knew walked in. As if that would happen, so far she only was willing to talk to two other people freely, one too old for the class and the other too young. Her leg was shaking under the desk wanting to leave. It seemed an eternity since she had asked her first of a series of stupid questions.
When the 'professor figure' (as she referred to him in her mind) took out a creature she just glanced at it then looked at her desk as the one girl mentioned what it was. You have to just let it go, it's not like there's anything you can do now, she thought as she began to tap her fingertips lightly against the desk.
