((Note: This takes place before the switch. ))
Grindylows, Hinkypunks, Porebins and Vampires, oh my! As the year progressed, so had the second years tackling of Dark Creatures, their primary focus of the year. Some of which they learned through demonstration or display and others they had taken on through a more practical approach.
The Deputy was seated cross-legged on her desk next to a large, covered tank, her head resting quite relaxed on a fist propped against her knee. She was taking advantage of such positions, before long she would have trouble sitting at all, let alone in such a position. But she had a few months before that.
With a huff of a sigh, her gray eyes glued on the entrance to the classroom in the back of the room, awaiting her second years.

Kyle entered the classroom, noticing that he was the first student to arrive. He carried only his wand in his pocket and was wearing his regular school robes with the Gryffindor crest. Kyle wondered vaguely what was in the large, covered box, cage or tank on her desk. Whatever it was, he was sure that it would be an enjoyable lesson.
As he walked by her, he smiled good naturedly and said "Afternoon Professor." Then he went and took his seat amid the empty desks.

Parker slowly walked in after Kyle. Smiling shakily to the professer and muttering a shy 'hello' as she walked by, she took her seat behind Kyle. She twisted the bottom of her school robes between her feet, flip flops showing. Her wand she set on the desk and hun her bag off the side of the chair. She felt nervous as she awaited the arrival of others.

Harmony sighed as she walked into the classroom about a minute after Parker had entered, muttering a quick "Good afternoon, Professor." as she saw her friends sitting down. Her other classes that day had been interesting, to say the least and she was eager to begin furthering her knowledge in (her opinion) the most useful class the school had to offer.
Harmony took a seat in a desk beside Kyle and turned sideways in her seat so she could see Parker as well. "This class shall be fun" She said, seeing the covered object on top of the teacher's desk.

Slipping quickly into class, Addison took a seat in the middle of the classroom. His eyes traveled over the other students, then back to the door. He was slightly out of breath and his face red. It was clear the boy had run most of the way to class.
Once he had caught his breath, Addison made one last glance at the door, then started digging in his bag for his books and parchment.

Kyle nodded to his friends as they sat down, saying hello in turn. Defence Against the Dark Arts was his favorite subject, mainly because it involved mostly wand work. Plus he could actually understand most of it. Most.
"This class shall be fun"
Kyle nodded in agreement. "Always is."

Aston entered the classroom with his face red and a large bump on his forehead. He sent a glare in his brother's direction and moved to a seat in the front. He wanted nothing to do with the other boy until he could get set for revenge.
"Do you have any ink I might borrow?" the boy asked the girl next to him (which could be anyone since I have no clue who's sitting where). He sent another glare in Addison's direction. "Mine seems to be missing."

Harmony smiled at Kyle's reply, before turning her attention to the Ravenclaw boy that sat down on her other side. "Um, sure..." She eyed the red bump on Aston's forehead as she dug out a spare bottle of ink from her bag and handed it to him. "Might I ask what happened? Normally people don't come to class with large lumps on their foreheads."

"Settle down, now, settle down," the Professor called from the front of the classroom, still seated upon her perch next to the still unknown contents of the tank.
Her gaze had been watching the parchment next to her, of which all of the second years names were listed, lifting only as each name in turn lit in fiery script as the face that matched the name walked through her door. Now her attention was fully and completely on her student body as she finished rolling up the parchment, sitting it farther back on the desk.
"Quickly, before we continue, can someone review for me, or attempt to tell me, what a Dark Creature is?"

Kyle waited patiently as the Professor also waited for the rest of the class to arrive. When the class was assembled and she finally spoke Kyle started to get excited. However her questioned sort of startled him. Was it a trick question or was he just thinking too much? Kyle preferred practical work to questions and answering, but he knew that would be too good to be true.
Raising his hand, he gave it a try. "Professor, is it a creature that can use dark magic?"

Dark creatures. From her place against the back wall, Theodora began to panic. What was she going to do? She was so incredibly worried and stressed. Just starting lessons had been bad enough. "Dark creatures mean death," Theodora said quietly when she had finished mouthing what Kyle had said.

Brooding over the answer, the Professor stood at last, walking among the student desks.
"Is it a creature that can use dark magic? Well, I suppose some of them can indeed, as after all this is Defense Against the Dark Arts and why else would we be studying these creatures if they did not relate?" She asked rhetorically, nodding her head along in a would-be-satisfied manner.
A small smirk upturned the corners of her lips and she turned to face the student, crossing her arms and giving her shoulders a slight shrug.
"So then, if that is your answer -- which I am not saying is correct or incorrect -- what is 'dark magic' as you put it?"

Alright, this professor offically talked way too much. It was like she needed an off switch. After Theodora finished mouthing that lengthy segment she answered. "Dark magic means death." She answered, practically trembling. This would not be a fun class. Some might call it an obsession with death, though it was bordering more on paranoia.

Harmony raised her hand. "Isn't dark magic, magic that has a harmful intent to it?" To be quite honest, she hadn't expected a simple question to be so hard to answer. She knew what a dark creature was in her head, but was unable to put it into words. Whether this was because she was over-analyzing the question, or her lack of sleep the night before, she had no clue. But it was worth giving a try wasn't it?

Kyle remained silent. He had never really thought what the definition of 'dark magic' was, or even a 'dark creature'. He had just always gone of the assumption that they were... well evil. Being muggle-born didn't help either. So far he had learned to split the magical world up between good and evil, evil being those who used magic for killing or harming others. What sounded like a simple question was proving rather difficult.
