Standing on the stone steps at the entrance of the Thornton residence, gray eyes crinkled with the hope that she wasn't going to receive a reprimanding look from Mrs. Thornton. It wasn't a state secret that the woman wasn't at all fond of her for the sole reason that she was dating her son. While she could have argued that it took two to tango, Alhana simply ignored that fact without a care. As with her boyfriend's mother's opinion, she dismissed it as she would any other.
A spur of the moment decision had prompted Alhana to rise early in that morning and travel across an ocean to California with Apa to pay a surprise visit to her favorite person residing in the United States. A slender hand rose up to rap her knuckles upon the door and then she stepped back to await a response. Far as she knew, those within were undoubtedly already aware of her presence. Since Drew had been kidnapped, security around their fortress was bumped up quite a few notches.

"GOT IT!" Drew shouted from his room upstairs and he thundered down the stairs, vaulting the banister at the bottom.
"Andrew!" his mother shouted from the garage. She had heard the sensors go off, but hadn't thought much of them until the knock came at the door. The alarms had a tendancy to sound even for the muggle neighbors walking their dogs. The good news was, she doubted anyone with sinister intentions would knock on the front door in broad daylight. Still, it was good to be careful. "Check who it is first!" she warned.
Drew already had his wand out before his mother had even spoken and he looked through the peekhole before opening the door. Surprise didn't even cover it. Seeing Alhana on the other side of the door was so much more.
He pulled the door open with his free hand and just looked at her a moment. "What are you doing here?" he finally asked with a puzzled look on his face.

The second the door swung open, Alhana's face pulled into a smile to greet whomever had come to answer her call. But as Drew's puzzled face came into view, her expression drooped considerably. His puzzled face in turn puzzled her. Not the reaction I had been expecting....
Biting her lip, the Starbreeze suddenly felt awkward answering that question, thinking it obvious. Her weight shifted to her other foot as it often did when she felt even the slightest bit uncomfortable and manicured nails picked at the strap of her messenger bag slung across her chest.
"To see you, silly," Alhana replied, feeling somewhat sarcastic as she did so. Why else would she have traveled to California for, standing in front of his house? "I certainly didn't come to see your mother or father."

Drew answered with a crooked smile just as his mother's voice drifted through the house. "Who is it, Drew?" she called out and he could tell she was coming to see for herself.
"It's Alhana," Drew called back, not taking his eyes of the Gryffindor girl. He was glad to see her, but his confusion was still evident. He had spent a good part of the last few weeks coming to terms with the idea that she had more important things to worry about than him. "You never come to visit me," he said, putting his hand out in an offer to take her bag and he moved aside to let her into the house.

Deciding that it was best not to retort with "Ah, but you never visit me, either," Alhana simply shrugged her shoulders, knowing that the comment might be taken as spiteful and offensive. His...interesting greeting could always be discussed at a different time.
She swung her tattered but sturdy bag off her body and placed the strap in his hand and stepped inside, away from the morning heat and into the cooler air within. Still slightly dumbfounded at his reaction to seeing her, she attempted to shrug it off as nothing. "Hullo Mrs. Thornton!" Alhana called out in the direction from which she heard the woman's footsteps.

"Alhana! It's so nice to see you!" Dolores Thornton greeted, coming around the corner, wiping her hands on the back of her shorts before offering a hand to the girl. It was true she didn't care much for Drew's girlfriend, but even she would admit (after much persuasion) that it was mostly due to the fact that she really didn't know Alhana. "I'm so sorry I'm in such a state, but the gardeners can't seem to find the gnome repelant we got last season and Drew's dad has stockpiled every broken appliance in there."
"We got it, Mom," Drew told her, carefully finding a spot out of the way for Alhana's stuff. He had a good idea that it contained a number of explosive items.

Alhana grinned and shook the woman's hand warmly, finding some amusement in her state. "That's quite all right, Mrs. Thornton. I hope it's not a problem that i stopped by...." she trailed off, smiling crookedly. "I had an inkling to come see your pain in the but son," she motioned to Drew jokingly.
"Can I help you look for the repellent?" Alhana offered her assistance.

"I'll be fine," she answered, her smile not faltering even thought she wasn't sure how she felt about this girl calling her son a pain in the butt. "Ask Drew. It's like a maze in there. Make yourself at home and I'll leave you guys alone." Of course this wwasn't entirely true. She'd be keeping the garage door open just incase. "We have sodas in the fridge and snacks in the cupboards, Drew," she finished before excusing herself back to the garage.
"C'mon," Drew said, grabbing Alhana's hand to lead her to the kitchen. The shock of her actually being there was slowly disapating, but he was still wondering what had prompted the visit.

"Food?" Alhana's ears perked up once Dolores disappeared out of sight. While not possessing as great an appetite as Drew, she still had a bit of a fast metabolism and ate every few hours. With the time that it had taken to get up, get dressed, and travel, she hadn't put a thing in her stomach since the wee hours of morning.
As Drew lead her to the kitchen, Alhana's eyes wandered to the walls and furniture, taking in the environment. "So, um, you didn't look ecstatic to see me?" she posed it as more of a question rather than a statement.

"What?" Drew asked with a short laugh, looking over his shoulder at her as he pulled out a number of sodas and sandwich makings from the refridgerator. "What do you mean? Of course I'm glad to see you. You just... surprised me is all. I wasn't expecting to see you... until fall."

Feeling more at ease with his answer, Alhana took it as satisfactory. "Me neither, " she conceded. "But I thought that not seeing my favorite person for the entire break was stupid, so I came to see you," she explained, absentmindedly fingering the promise ring Drew had given her for her sixteenth birthday.
Sliding easily onto a nearby stool, Alhana popped open two of the sodas and handed one to Drew. A slight, thoughtful frown crossed her face that she didn't bother to hide. "That's weird that we never make plans for break, huh?" she asked somewhat rhetorically.

"We tried," Drew answered and it was true they had, but something always seemed to get in the way... his mom... her dad. He remembered having a huge argument with his parents on summer a few years back on why Allegra could visit her boyfriend in Bulgaria, but he couldn't go to Hungary to see Alhana. He never had actually gotten a straight answer.
He slapped a hunk of butter on the skillet to melt as he halved a couple of french rolls and sliced up some brie. Good thing about cooking for Alhana was she ate just about anything.
"So I'm your favorite person, huh?" he asked, grinning over at her as he slapped the bread on to toast.

"Well...I wouldn't say the top choice. I mean, I am rather fond of myself," Alhana joked with a funny, vain face. She flipped the hair away from her face in a way that she had deemed "flippy" and "girly."
"But under me, you are definitely the first," she assured him with her own grin, glad to see that he seemed in a much better mood than he had when she last saw him at school. Letters never revealed a person's real feelings if you knew how to conceal them.
Worry had also prompted her visit, but she wouldn't let him know as much. "So what have you been up to around here? Causing trouble?" she asked, taking a swig from the pop.

Drew snorted at her clarification as he flipped the bread and put the cheese on to melt. This, he covered with thin slices of prosciutto and fresh basil leaves. He usually tossed a portobello mushroom on there as well when he made a grilled cheese, but they seemed to be out.
"Just hanging around, keeping low key," he answered, placing the other half of the toasted roll on top and letting it grill together for a while longer. "Hanging out at my grandmother's a lot, surfing, studying for the OWLs."

Alhana beckoned him closer to her. "Ick, studying. That's one thing I hate doing during break but ti helps during the year if you study ahead, ya'know?" she slipped an arm around his middle even though he'd soon have to return to the stove.
"One of my cousins works with a lot of glass. He owns his own shop and he's pretty good at it, I think. I was over there a few days ago and he taught me how to make a few trinkets and such," Alhana said quite randomly, pulling out a small rectangular black box.
Inside lay the relevance of her cousin's glass making machines. Attached to a leather thong was strung an bronze eagle clasped around a glass orb with navy blue, gold, and creamy white color swirls. "Made it myself!" Alhana proclaimed proudly.
