"Yeah, he loves her," Drew answered, finally figuring out why Lily would be so concerned. "Her and my cousin Stephen and my Aunt Janine. It's more of a joke for him, feeling ganged up though. But yeah, he loves them still."

"That's good," Lily said. "So then most of your family are witches and wizards?" Lily had always wondered what that would be like, she had never known there to be any magic in her family. She had always known it to be made of muggles. Or at least what she knew of them. She had never met either of her grandparents.

"My dad's brother and his sister each married Muggles, so all of my cousins are halvsers," Drew answered. "They're all magical and all, but Allegra and I are the only pure-blooded grandkids."

"Don't you ever let that put you above them," Lily said, even though she knew that Drew wouldn't. "I've met people who are really awful about the pureblood and halfblood stuff, I hate it. It's so rude and snobbish. That's like saying I'm more European than you. It's not nice at all."

Drew frowned, a little hurt that Lily would even think he might possibly hold it over his cousins' heads like it was a prize, and also a little insulted she equated it to being European, which he didn't think was such a big deal to begin with.

"Drew?" Lily said. "What did I say this time? You went quiet again." She had figured out that Drew was only quiet at one time. That was when she said something that made him think, usually not in a good way. Or was she overanalyzing? Possibly, it was so hard to tell sometimes. Oh to be able to read another's mind.

"I can be proud of my heritage without being stuck up about it, right?" Drew asked, needing her to see that he could. He hadn't really appreciated it when he was at home, but was now starting to see how neat it was. That didn't mean he thought he was any better than anyone else, did it?

"Right," Lily said. "That you can. I just . . ." She paused looking for the right words. "That's not what I meant. I wasn't saying you were. I was just saying that you, as in the general sense of the whole world, shouldn't do that. But so many people do. It's not right." She hated that. She hated that some people were so, so, well she didn't know the right word for it, but she would.

"I wouldn't do that," he told her, even though she had just assured him she knew he wouldn't. "For one thing, my cousin Tad would rip me a new one..." Tad was ten years older and quite big.

"Rip you a new one?" Lily asked, tilting her head. She had never heard the expression before. She wondered if it was a California one or if she just wasn't up to date on what the cool people were saying. She waited patiently for Drew to explain.

Drew bit his lip and nodded, unable to think of a more delicate way of saying it. "Beat the ever-living tar out of me?" he tried, but it just didn't have the same meaning of course.

"Wow," Lily said, thinking she probably understood it now. "You have a big cousin. I hope he's not bigger than you, because I think quite possibly, anyone bigger than you might scare me. Big people scare me. They're so . . .big and I'm so . . . " She was trying to find a better word than small to use. That seemed so demeaning.

"All the guys in my family are bigger than I am," Drew answered plainly. "Except for my younger cousins... and my Papi. He's really short. He's about Allegra's height I think."

"They're all bigger than you?" Lily asked, her eyes widening. "All of them? Every single one? Would they smush me if they tripped and fell? I don't want to be smushed. I don't want to end up like Flat Stanley. That wouldn't be too much fun. But still I wouldn't want to be smushed."

"My dad, my uncle Theo, my cousin, my grandfather... even my Uncle Mike and he's the shortest of all of them," Drew answered. "All of the Thorntons are tall I guess. Even Uncle Mike and he's not even really a Thornton."
