"Wow," Lily said again. "And I thought you were tall. Is everyone else in the United States tall too? Or is it just your family? I'm still waiting to meet someone short. Do you have anyone in your family my size?" She thought about it for a moment, trying to decide if there was anyone in the world her size.

"Of course we have different sized people over there," Drew answered. It's just like anywhere else."
"I think my cousin Stevie is about your size," he told her with a small smile. "But he's only 10. Actually, he might be taller still."

"That's not fair," Lily said with a huff. "A ten year old. Taller than me? That's really not fair. Why'd I have to be so short?" Lily asked mostly rehetorically. She knew why she was so short, she just wished there was a better answer. She just wished it wasn't her fault.

"Well, he's a Thornton," Drew answered with a small shrug. "Well, he's not really, really a Thornton, but still he is because his mom is a Thornton, so yeah, that counts, right?"

"Of course that counts," Lily said. "It's still in your blood. I've actually been thinking about," she was quiet for a bit. She shouldn't be ashamed of what she had been thinking, it was perfectly alright, but for some reason she did. "I've actually been thinking about changing my name so that I would take my mum's maiden name as my last name instead."

Drew looked over at her and gave her a small smile. "That sounds like it would work," he told her. "I mean, you'd rather keep that tie to your mom than your dad, right? No offence, but... he's not going to care and even if he did, he cant' do anything about it now, right?"

"Right," Lily said. "It would be like reminding me every day of who it was that gave me life. Who loved me even when no one else did. She was so strong Drew, to be defeated by something so simple. I always somehow imagined her dying a better death, then growing so weak in the end."

"I think it would be a great tribute to her," Drew answered. He stopped to wonder how his own mom would feel about it all and figured she'd want him to be a Thornton.
Papi was probably the only one who would care, considering he only had daughters...

"I think so too," Lily said. "Not only that but a great way to seperate ties with my dad. But how does one go about doing that? I've never really considered it before so I haven't really researched it yet or anything." She liked to research all good ideas she had. You need to know what you're talking about after all.

"I think it's just a matter of getting the legal papers to do it," Drew told her. "Plus, you'd have to get all of your school records changed over, but that shouldn't be too hard, right?

"I wouldn't think so," Lily said. "But I don't have any experience in this. Do you know anyone who's change their name?" She thought for a moment. "Lillian Viteri. Lily Viteri. How does that sound? Not to strange? I dunno. It's Italian. My mum's father's father lived in Italy. Most that side of my family is Italian."

"I like it," Drew told her with a grin and a definitive nod. "You know, you could start out doing the hyphenated thing until you get used to it and when you're ready, just drop the Tasando."

"Oh I think I'm ready now," Lily said, with probably a bit too much confidence. "The less there is to remind me of him the better. I know that he'll never leave my memory completely, but I don't want his last name. He hasn't ever been any relation of mine, lest of all my father." She was certain about that if she was certain about anything.

"Good!" Drew answered emphatically. He really felt she was making the right decision and was pleased she had done it pretty much on her own.

"We should probably get to bed," Lily said after a bit. "But it's so warm and comfy here by the fire and I don't want to drag myself all the way back up the steps. I'm entitled to a lazy day aren't I? It's just so hard, there's so many steps. It's amazing how anyone can climb them." So she was being a bit melodramatic. She wasn't even tired.
