The morning had started out well enough. Arianna had woke to find Snip just outside her window with another letter from her parents. Arianna quickly read through it and replied as Snip took a short break before being sent out again. Normally Arianna would allow the owl to rest for at least full day between deliveries, but at present it wasn't needed. Snip only had to find the Qui-lin guards, who would then send the message on; a task that seemed to be ten times quicker than the usual delivery time. Arianna would have given the letter to the the guards herself if she hadn't been trying to forget they were even around. Besides, owls had a much easier time finding people than she possibly could.
And now that her first order of business for the day was taken care of, Arianna dressed herself in a pair of jeans, layering a bright blue tank with a yellow one, and made her way downstairs, carefully bouncing down the stairway with as little noise as possible. It was early enough that the Thorntons might still be sleeping. If they were, Arianna was going to try and make some breakfast for them all. When she entered the kitchen, though, the girl was met by another distraction: two letters resting upon the table that she was certain had come from school. One, in particular, looked a little thicker than usual.
"What...?" Arianna moved for a closer look and found that hers was the thick one. Something slid around inside as she picked it up, creating quite a bit of confusion and a glimmer of hope. Arianna had hoped for it, but never imagined it could come true. Not after she'd been passed up for prefect. No, this just couldn't be right.
Forgetting what she had come down here for, Arianna sat down in the nearest chair, still staring at the letter. She gave it a few shakes to be sure she hadn't been imagining things just a few moments ago. Whatever was in there was still there. Arianna just wasn't sure she wanted to know if it was what she was hoping it was.

Drew had become a rather light sleeper lately and had woken when he heard Ari stirring in her room across the hall. By the time she was going down the stairs, he had pulled on his board shorts and a t-shirt, wondering if he could talk the girl into a morning surf. A few minutes later, he was walking into the kitchen himself and he grinned over at her as he opened the refridgerator and grabbed the OJ, drinking straight from the carton.
"What you got there?" he asked, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

"School letters," Arianna replied, shaking hers again. She was still hoping, but knew she shouldn't be get her hopes up too much. Since when had she gotten something she'd been wanting for...well, as long as she could remember? No. Usually such things went to someone else. Or if she did get it, everything went bad.
"Omelets sound good this morning?" Deciding she could still wait to be disappointed, Arianna set the letter down and headed to the fridge, digging around for the eggs, bacon, cheese, and whatever else she could find to toss in.

"Works for me," Drew answered, straddling a stool at the counter. She was obviously avoiding opening her letter, but of course he wouldn't let her hold off on it forever. "So what's in there you don't want to see?" he asked, knowing why he didn't really want to open his letter up. They would contain his OWL scores and he wasn't really looking forward to seeing them.

"I dunno," Arianna replied truthfully, shrugging as she set out all sorts of goodies for the omelets. It was true, wasn't it? She hadn't yet opened the letter and could only assume what might be in there. Maybe they had a new position for students. Like hall monitor or eraser cleaner. It would be Arianna's luck to be the first to get that. But why would they have to announce it with a badge?

Drew picked up her envelope and held it up to the light, trying to see through it. The paper was too thick, but it was obvious there was something in there along with her letter. He slowly toyed with it, waving it in the air while she set up the omlettes. "How about..." he spoke carefully, looking at the letter instead of her, "I open yours and you open mine..."

Arianna glanced at Drew with an expression that clearly said she wasn't too excited about the proposition. But as she thought about it, Arianna decided she would rather have Drew see whatever was in there first. She couldn't understand her own reasoning for it, but it somehow sounded like a good idea.
"Okay," she nodded slightly. Leaving the omelet stuff on the counter, Arianna moved to the table and carefully picked up Drew's letter. It was as it should be; nothing extra inside, so it seemed. "On three?" she questioned, raising an eyebrow at the boy.

"One... two..." but Drew had already been tearing open the envelope, slowly slitting the top with one finger. He grinned at her as he pulled out the parchment, waiting for her to open his envelope so they could read them together.

"Three..." Arianna tore through the envelope with ease. She eased the parchment out and held it between her hands as she offered a small smile at Drew. The paper she held seemed so...ordinary; nothing different from what they'd gotten in the past. The letter in Drew's hand, though....Arianna was curious to know what was in it, but at the same time wasn't sure if she wanted to know.

Drew did a little dance to himself as if he had earned the badge inside the envelope. He pulled the parchment out and opened it, reading off all of the standard start of year things but adding one extra bit at the end. "Someone may-ade caaaptain.." he sang, finally pulling out the badge.

As Drew read off the letter, Arianna waited patiently for the 'important' announcement. If you consider patience meaning bouncing in your seat and barely keeping yourself from telling him to get to the point, of course. When Drew finally got to that point, Arianna's face sort of fell. Her brows creased and she blinked at the boy, certain he was wrong.
"Captain?" Arianna repeated, crinkling her nose unintentionally. She set Drew's letter down and reached across for the badge. Had someone gone nuts? "Quidditch captain? Why would they make me captain?"

"Uh... maybe because you're the best dang seeker the school has seen in years?" Drew answered as if it were obvious. Arianna had been undefeated save one game... a game the team had played right after a brutal match with Slytherin. No one was to blame for that loss except for the Snakes.
"But if you don't want it, I'll take it," Drew answered, pinning the badge on his shirt. he brushed it off importantly and admired how it looked in the reflective oven door.

Arianna tried to brush Drew's comment off, but felt a blush creep onto her face. She didn't think she was the best...she'd just been fortunate enough to play against less able players. Right? Even if she was the best, Arianna wouldn't be flaunting it. Unlike that snake who claimed he was a holy grim of seekers or something like that. Arianna didn't want to be that cocky and annoying.
"You might be better at it," Arianna muttered. She really didn't feel worthy. Odd, though. Quidditch Captain didn't seem quite as important as Head Girl did, and yet Arianna had felt she would have done well in that position. But then she'd been passed up for prefect a while back...why would she possibly think they would give her HG?

"Okay, then I'll keep it," Drew answered, making a face at her. "Ill even trade you for what's in my envelope. Then I'll have a matching set and you'll have..." He knew exactly what would be in that envelope and, not that he wanted Ari to have it, he seriously wished he was able to trade for anything.

"New OWL scores? I bet I'll get straight..." Arianna had unfolded the paper and now stared at the grades in front of her. She had almost expected to see a perfect line of Outstandings in all but one class and had been about to comment on it when her eyes fell up on the grades Drew had received. He had said he hadn't done well, but Arianna had thought he was just being hard on himself. Now she saw that he hadn't been too far off.
"They were going to let you take them over again, weren't they?" she asked, folding the paper back up, thinking Drew probably didn't want to look at it. "I mean, it really wasn't all that fair to make you take it so soon after...you know.."
