{go away. You lost your say when you went to Germany ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) } "I could have stopped her," Drew mumbled again. "I should have stopped her and I didn't. If anything, I egged her on until she had no other choice but to leave. So I am a crappy friend. She was right... you both are."

Arianna's brow furrowed further. She couldn't remember saying anything about Drew being a crappy friend. Not recently, anyway.
"But...how did you egg her on?" Arianna tried, shaking herself from her other thoughts. "You said she was the one bringing up the past. Not you. She's done this before, Drew. She's threatened to run away before and she's done it once already. You can only do so much for her. She has to do the rest. Maybe...maybe it is good that she's left for a bit."

"I suppose," Drew answered back sullenly, looking back into the fire. All he could think about was how he had promised to be there for her. That was why he stuck around, trying to give it another try, letting her beat him up emotionally. It was all that stupid promise. And now he broke it.
And felt like a jerk because of it.

Arianna fell quiet again. She followed Drew's gaze back to the fire and tried to remember everything she knew about the situation with Lily. She didn't know much. Arianna only remembered stopping Lily from running away after finding the girl pressing Drew to talk to her when he really wasn't in the state to do so.
"I'm not good at this, you know," Arianna muttered quietly. "I'm not good at giving advice. Especially when I don't know everything that's going on."
She paused a moment to sniff. She could feel her own emotions, the ones she had been keeping inside most of the year, bubbling to the surface. How long she could keep them in check, Arianna didn't know. She didn't think it would last long, though.
"Part of me wants to tell you to just forget her," she finally admitted, glancing over to Drew for a moment before her eyes fell back on her lap. "I remember...remember that that day I ran into you two coming out of the Great Hall. I hated seeing what she was doing to you. I've never seen you like that before and I...I don't know if it'll be the last time if things keep going like this. I don't want to see it happen, though."

"I promised I'd take care of her," Drew said softly, keeping his eyes on the flames. "I told her that I'd look after her. I wouldn't leave her. I wouldn't let anything happen to her. She thinks I'm a liar now."

Arianna bit her lip. She thought to ask what the hell he was supposed to be saving Lily from. Herself?
"You can't let her feel like this, though," Arianna pointed out instead. She doubted anything she said would help at all, but she had to say something. "You'll end up blaming yourself for everything that happens to her; for everything she does."

Drew nodded back. He had been trying to tell himself that very thing for the last few months. It didn't change anything other tha n her adding 'unfeeling jerk' to her list of names for him. "But I promised her," he said softly.

"And what about her? What does she give you in return?" Arianna pressed. Besides making you feel like crap. It sounded like a stupid thing to promise, but she wasn't going to tell him that. There was no way he could meet that promise all the time. But how would she tell that to Drew without making him feel worse? "A promise is no good if it ends up making you feel like sh** no matter how hard you try to hold up your part."

Drew mulled it over for a while as he frowned at the rug and scratched the back of his neck nervously. It was against his very nature to go back on a promise like that. It was probably one of the reasons he kept trying to keep ties with Lily. He had backed off, for sure, trying to protect himself and still keep up with her, and even that had backfired. She had gone to Mungo's without his knowing and then managed to make him feel like he had neglected her.
It was a vicious cycle. He backed off to protect himself and she made him feel like a bigger jerk for neglecting her.

"I wish I could tell you what to do," Arianna muttered quietly. Oh, she could think of several things she would want him to do or say, but they might all make things worse. "I don't know how good talking to her would do."

"I don't want to talk to her anymore," he mumbled, feeling like a bigger jerk for even thinking it. "Everytime I talk to her, she just makes me feel like a bigger piece of crap. Everytime I try to talk about something that won't make me feel like crap, she manges to do it anyway. I can't win."

Arianna frowned. It made sense, though. Why hang out with someone who always made you feel bad? You gradually grew to resent them and sometimes even yourself, which Arianna could see was a problem here. She wanted to tell him that he didn't have to talk to Lily anymore if he didn't want to. She wanted to tell him to tell the other girl to stuff it if she started in making him feel crappy. If only there was a better way to put it.

Drew sat quietly as he kicked at the lint on the rug and thought things through. Was there a difference between not liking a person and not liking the way they treat you? He wasn't sure there was. He didn't like being near Lily. She was mean to him. That meant they weren't friends anymore, right? If they werent' friends anymore, did he have to keep his promise to her?
"House elves are slacking..." he mumbled, noticing he had made quite a little lint pile with his toe.

Arianna offered a small nod, though she didn't even turn to see what Drew was talking about.
"Everything will turn out okay," she spoke certainly but still quietly, placing a hand on the boy's arm. "I can talk to her if you want me to. I have nothing to lose. I can talk to her."

"Don't bother..." he said, sitting back into the cushions again. "I'm not sure why I'm even bothering anymore. It's not like she even cares. I was on the right track with this and then she had to write the damn latter."
