Arianna sniffed again and gave a small nod. She was glad Drew wouldn't push it. It might've been a silly thing to worry about and wouldn't have given much trouble at any other time, but given the situation, she doubt Drew would have understood or appriciated her asking such a question.
"So...you...you wanna help me?" she asked quietly as she picked up the mixing spoon and started smooshing the sugar into the butter.

"All right," Drew answered, standing up and tossing the now damp rag into the sink. Ari seemed to have it all under control and he wasn't too sure what she needed him to do, so he stood next to her and waited for instructions.

"We need the eggs," Arianna whispered, nodding toward the bowl beside Drew's hand. Feeling her mood returning near normal, she nudged him in the side playfully.

"You're going to make me drop them," Drew cautioned, shying away from the poking. He brought them over and put them on the counter, with a small sniff and a weak smile. "How many do you need?"

"Three," Arianna replied, continuing to cream the butter and sugar together. She pushed the bowl towards Drew as she mixed. "Just put them in when you're ready."

Drew grinned to himself, thinking for a moment about just tossing the whole eggs into the bowl, shell and all, but then he figured he wouldn't get his cookies if he did that.
Carefully, he cracked the eggs and put them in, throwing the shells int the sink when he was done.

"And...vanilla," Arianna instructed as she mixed the eggs in. Unable to help herself, she dipped a finger in the bowl and lifted it to her mouth. She's heard it was bad for you, but it was one of her favourite parts of making cookies. After certain ingredients were added, you just had to take a taste.

"How much vanilla?" Drew asked with a sniff, grabbing the bottle and just pouring it into the batter until it looked and smelled right. He held the bottle up and saw that it was now about half empty.

"I think that's good," Arianna continued mixing, enjoying the vanilla-y smell. Perhaps it was a bit too much, but she didn't mind. It wasn't like he'd poured in a handful of salt. It shouldn't affect the cookies too much...should it?

"So... now what?" Drew asked, stepping back and smiling a little. He knew he had over poured the vanilla, but figured it wouldn't do much damage. Just a bit more sugar and flour would even it out easily.

"Um....."Arianna paused and looked over the ingredients sitting on the counter. Her cheeks slowly turned red as she realized she had no clue what was next. "We got the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla...oh, we need just a pinch of salt, I think, and then the flour and chips, right?"

Drew nodded as he stuck a fingerful of batter into his mouth. "Don't we need baking powder or something?" He tried to remember himself what went into the dough. He usually just followed the directions on the back of the bag of chips.

"Oh, yeah!" Arianna winced. One more thing she had forgotten. "It's a good think I'm not making these by myself. We'd get flat gooey...blobs instead of cookies. Arianna's Butterscotch Blobs! I like the sound of that, actually. Maybe we should try....But then we'd have to change the name, wouldn't we?"

"They don't taste right," Drew answered, looking for the baking powder. He pulled out a can and a box. "Is it the baking powder or the baking soda?" He knew from experience that they weren't interchangable.

"I...don't know," Arianna replied, glancing from one container of powdery white stuff to the other container of powdery white stuff. She remembered that one reacted wonderfully with vinegar and fizzed when it got wet, but was that the one you put in the cookies? Or was it the other? "Maybe we should look for a recipe book?"
