Charon was still somewhat skeptical, but if there really was something wrong and Rael wanted to talk, she would. He relished the feel of her leaning against him, and of her arm around his back. "I really hope the weather warms up soon," he said. "I'm looking forwards to that night of stargazing."

"As am I," she smiled against him, careful not to breathe too deeply, for fear of doing something ridiculous again. She pulled away from him and smiled. "Shall we continue, then?" All traces of disappointment were gone from her face, but she still held on to a small hope that he would take the chance another time.

"I think we shall," Charon replied. His stomach chose that moment to suddenly remember that it was empty, and communicated that fact to them loudly. "And it appears my stomach seconds that notion," he added, chuckling.
Suddenly he started running down the stairs and yelled, "Last one down the stairs is a rotten egg!" He made sure not to get too far ahead of Rael, though.

Rael's grin appeared again at Charon's wonderful, talking stomach. "I do believe it does agree." Her eyes smiled when she heard him laugh.
After he took off, and yelled his statement, she simply shook her head. Boys will be boys, she thought as she took off after him, however, girls will always give boys competition. Rael had no problem catching up with Charon as they ran down the stairs. "Looks like you may be the rotten one, Rone" she exclaimed as she took a slight lead.

"I may be a bad egg, but I can assure you there's nothing rotten about me," Charon said as he sped up just enough to retake the lead. "Don't forget, you're going up against a runner," he taunted. "So there's no shame on you when you lose."
He saw that the end of the stairs was coming up soon, and he decided to taunt Rael even more by finishing the race backwards. He had no trouble with the turnaround, but the last stair gave him a bit of trouble. He tripped on it and fell. His arms broke his fall somewhat, but he still hit his head on the floor with a rather loud crack.

Rael laughed loudly at what he said. Obviously he didn't believe in her sports skills. When Charon turned around to run backward, Rael had an uneasy feeling, she was just about to say something when she seen Charon trip. She felt like she seen what happened in slow motion. The loud crack noise his head made when it made contact with the floor made her freeze. She stood motionless on the last step, but only for a moment longer.
"Rone?" she asked. She fell down to her knees beside him. "Rone?" she asked with more urgency in her voice. She touched his face lightly and waited for his response.

Charon opened his eyes slowly. His head was throbbing, and it didn't particularly like light right now. He saw Rael kneeling beside him and said slurringly, "What happened? Did I win?"
He sat up slowly, not only did his head dislike light right now, it also disliked changes in altitude. He felt the back of his head for bumps or bleeding, and although he had a lump that felt like it was the size of an egg, his hand came away clean and he hadn't felt any blood. he started to try to stand up, but his head throbbed particularly nastily and he was forced to sit back down immediately.

Rael stared incredulously at Charon for what he said. He had just fallen to the floor, could have broken something, could have had a concussion, and all he was worried about was if he won. Stupid git, she thought. When he sat up she could see the pain much more clearly written on his face, and could hardly believe he tried to stand after his fall.
When he sat back down, Rael remained where she was, shaking her head. "You know, next time if winning is so important, why don't you let me know, rather than trying to hurt yourself, eh?" Her voice held a forced laughter, but a heavy concern. She positioned herself behind him to have a look at his head. She ran her fingers through his hair lightly, so as not to cause him more pain, and felt the large bump on his head. "That's going to hurt for while, mate."
She stood up and walked around him, so she was standing in front of him. She bent over and leaned in close to his face to have a look at his eyes, to see if they were focused or not.

Charon realized Rael wasn't just looking into his eyes for the fun of it, she was checking to see if he had a concussion. he toyed briefly with the idea of focusing and unfocusing his eyes just to give her a bit of a scare, but decided that she had just had enough of a scare.
"But if I just tell you winning is important instead of hurting myself, I don't learn a lesson from it. Today's lesson: never run down stairs on an empty stomach," he joked. He smiled at her to reassure her that he was ok and said, "I have to admit you're right, though. That thing is gonna hurt for a while. Oh well. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, eh?" As an afterthought he added, "Or else it kills off a few pesky brain cells that would otherwise allow me to think and not do stupid stuff like that in the future."

Rael had lifted his chin in her hand to get a better look while he was chatting. She smiled when she seen his smile, but was still quite concerned. She listened to what he said last and laughed lightly.
"But it seems you don't have too many of those cells to kill off as it is. And I'd prefer to have you in one piece rather than without thinking skills. As it is, I should confess I'm planning on keeping you around for conversations, not for much else," she smiled and looked into his eyes with mischief. "And if you didn't have cells to think, in order to talk, I'm afraid I'd have to drop ya." The laughter was back in her lightly accented voice.
She leaned forward a bit more, and laid her forehead against his. Rael's eyes staring into Charon's.

"Y'know, that's the sorta thing that would be helpful to know earlier in the relationship. Like before I attempt possibly suicidal acts," Charon playfully complained. "So what's the diagnosis, doc? Am I gonna be ok, or do I need a brain transplant?" he asked.
While he waited for Rael to answer, a ssmall gleam appeared in his eye. Without disconnecting his forehead from hers, he angled his head just enough that he could kiss her on the tip of her nose. Which he did, and immediately followed up with a grin.

Before she had a chance to respond, Charon moved slightly and touched his lips to the tip of her nose. A faint tinge appeared on her cheeks quickly afterward. She closed her eyes and before she spoke. "I do believe a brain transplant may be helpful, however, my diagnoses it that you'll live, but regrettably with a few less brain cells."
She decided against the argument she had just been having with herself, and re-opened her eyes. She smiled consciously and shifted her head slightly so that her lips almost made contact with his.

"Aw shucks. And I was looking forwards to attempting to become the first wizard to ever perform a brain transplant on himself. Of course, maybe it's for the best. I'm not sure I own anything sharp enough to cut through my skull," Charon joked.
He had seen Rael move so their lips were almost touching, and he had started talking to give himself time to think. He wasn't sure if she had moved on purpose, or by accident, and wasn't entirely sure if he should take the chance. Ah, heck with it. I've already passed up two chances this afternoon. As they say, third time's the charm. Besides, Rael wouldn't slap a guy who almost just gave himself a concussion, would she? he thought, before he closed what little distance was left between their lips.

At first, Rael had thought the movement she made had been wrong. She regretted what she did while Charon talked, not seeming to take notice to what she had done. She refused to allow herself to be disappointed by this, and was ready to pull away and say something about Charon's performing his own brain surgery. When he made a sudden movement, he caught her by surprise. She hadn't expected him to close the distance, with the way he was babbling.
Her eyes automatically closed on instinct and she let herself enjoy the kiss for a moment. Then she pulled away. Maybe it was an accident and he just moved his head, or maybe it was something else. She let herself lean further away from his face, but not too far. Rael's eyes searched Charon's face for the reasoning behind what he had done.

Charon was confused. He had thought that Rael had wanted the kiss, that she had moved her head purposefully. He had enjoyed it, and also thought that she was enjoying it. But the way she had pulled away made him wonder. Was it a mistake? Had he misread her? Was he just a bad kisser? He looked at Rael and saw her searching his face. He waited for her to say something, or to slap him, or anything that might give him a clue as to what had just happened.
