Now she was mad and, of course, she had every right to be. It felt a little unfair for her to call him up for lying like that, but still, she was right- he pretty much had. "I didn't mean to... It was just that... I couldn't... I didn't think..." he said, starting a number of thoughts but not figuring out how to finish them.

"You didn't think you could trust me," Arianna finished for him. She ducked back under the blanket, sniffling again and again. "Yeah, I get it."

"I didn't think you'd care..." Drew answered softly. He still wasn't sure she would really care, but after seeing how miserable he had made her, was almost ready to at least give it a try. False sympathy had to be better than this.

"You didn't....?" Arianna peeked back over the edge of the blanket, the hurt she felt apparent even in the small portion of her face that was showing. She couldn't even repeat what Drew had said. What had she done to make him think she wouldn't care? "Why wouldn't I?"

Drew bit on his lip to stop it from trembling. He shrugged back at her, not knowing how to explain it to her. All he knew was that she and Alhana never got along. Why would she care about what was going on?

When Drew didn't answer, Arianna pushed herself up into a sitting position, the blanket falling on her lap. She watched him intently, waiting either for a reason why she wouldn't care, or for the thing she supposedly wouldn't care about. She was starting to get an idea of what it might be. There was only one matter in which Drew swore Arianna hated even though she honestly didn't.

He couldn't say it. The words wouldn't come. He had denied anything was wrong for so long that now, faced with Ari challenging it all with one look, he couldn't tell her. Instead, he pulled the blanket over his head, wishing it all away.

Arianna groaned silently when Drew hid himself again. He didn't want to tell her. That much was obvious. But maybe she could prod it out of him by asking the question she had been dreading.
"You didn't...." but she found she couldn't ask. She wasn't sure she wanted to know now.

The only sound that came out from under the blanket was a choked back sob. No, they hadn't broken up (he was assuming that was her question), but they might as well have given how terrible he felt.

Even though she hadn't finished her question, Arianna assumed she had been right. She wasn't sure what to think. How? Why? WHAT had caused this to happen.
"Drew?" forgetting her own frustration and anger for the moment, Arianna rushed to Drew's side, leaving the blanket on the floor near the chair. "Wha....Why? I don't...I don't understand."

Drew shook his head under the blanket, at what he wasn't too sure. He viciously swiped at his eyes again and while part of him wanted to tell her to just leave him alone, the bigger part of him wanted her right there next to him.

"But...you said things were okay," Arianna sniffed again. This time her tears were for Drew. She knew what it was like to lose someone you loved and, though she had always fought her own confused feelings for the boy, she never ever wanted Drew to go through the same thing.

"I don't know... I don't know... I don't know..." he repeated through the threatening sobs. Nothing else seemd to be able to come out of his mouth at the moment. He swallowed hard and shook his head again. Denying the whole thing was so much easier.

Arianna imediately wrapped her arms around the boy, pulling him into a tight embrace. He obviously hadn't been the one to break up with Alhana. But what could have made her want to break up with him? It didn't make sense. He hadn't done anything wrong as far as Arianna knew.
"Drew...I'm so sorry," the girl muttered, touching her lips to the top of his head. "I'm so....so sorry."

Having her arms around him made him feel a little better and he figured he might as well go all the way with letting her in on the whole thing as best he could. Not quite ready to speak yet, he pulled her last letter from the pouch of his sweatshirt. Snaking a hand out from under the blanket, he handed it to her. She could read it for herself.
